were civilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Humvee rolled up the long drive to the Cross Timber cabin just after sunset, carrying tired wolves, road dust, snack wrappers, luggage, leftover silence, and the strange ache that came from leaving somewhere that had become important too quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel opened the passenger door and sat there for a moment with one paw on the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have lost faith in sitting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark unbuckled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat sentence means nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt means everything below my spine has commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCereal?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCereal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stared at the cabin with renewed purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p know was his.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not Cal standing on a deck he had helped build, holding a key like it might vanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Home in the older, deeper sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their first den.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The place that had held them before the world knew what to do with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stood in the pantry and made a wounded sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somewhere north, two wolves were learning what it felt like to decide whether a gift could become home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somewhere here, in Cross Timber, the alarm clock would eventually drag Night Shift back to the road they knew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For once, he did not fight sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunday passed in Recording confirmation should follow in the ordinary course, but all required documents are in motion and the title company has completed its side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s eyes closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark exhaled quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane said, \u201cThey accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli\u2019s voice softened by half a degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI walked them through property taxes, insurance, utility expectations, maintenance obligations, emergency reserves, transfer implications, and the fact that owning a beautiful house is not the same thing as being handed a free life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey listened. They asked good questions. Cal asked the better maintenance questions.
