Gabriel matched him for the first several seconds, black fur flashing beside brown. Mark ran with clean, efficient form, less explosive but fast enough that the watching parents made startled sounds anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane crossed the far marker first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel hit it a fraction later, skidding sideways with an exaggerated complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cUnfair!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI won.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBecause physics is cruel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark crossed the line third, barely winded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThane won because he has a longer stride and greater acceleration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThank you for making the loss scientific.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou are welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The children ran toward them, cheering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane bent slightly at the waist, hands on his knees, smiling as a dozen voices demanded to know whether they could race a horse, a motorcycle, a train, the wind, Superman, and \u201ca really fast dog.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel answered every question with solemn authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo, maybe, no, definitely not, that is fictional, and we are not discussing dogs today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark corrected two of those answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane listened, laughed, and let the bright afternoon happen around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An older woman approached later with a cane and a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI saw you boys on television,\u201d she told them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel smiled warmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHopefully not at the worst possible moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOh, I saw that too.\u201d She waved one hand. \u201cThe press conference. The nice one. You were all very sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The woman stepped close enough to shake his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou keep being careful,\u201d she said. \u201cThat matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Gabriel saw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark did too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYes, ma\u2019am,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The woman squeezed his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n As the afternoon softened, the little crowd around them thinned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Families returned to soccer games. The market began packing away a few early items. Dogs tugged their people toward the pond trail. The day\u2019s dampness lingered in the grass. Somewhere near the bandstand, a child laughed too loudly and was immediately shushed by a parent who was laughing too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane unlocked the Humvee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel climbed into the passenger seat, still scrolling through pictures people had tagged them in online.
