The shape of the sidearm was familiar at his hip. Not a burden exactly. Not off duty in the way people imagined off duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The badge and gun went with them when they left the property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because they expected trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because they knew better than to promise the world it would wait until shift change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel was already by the front door, wearing a black overshirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows. His badge sat on his belt opposite his holster, polished enough to catch the morning light. He had sunglasses pushed into the fur above one ear and a grin that usually meant trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stood beside him with a light jacket over one arm, a compact first-aid pouch clipped to his belt beside his own badge and sidearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the pouch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou bringing medical supplies to breakfast?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked back at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are driving thirty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is IHOP.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is still thirty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded solemnly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMark is right. Anything can happen in that amount of time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s grin widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou could attempt to make pancakes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared for one beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then smiled despite himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are still on that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel opened the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThane, I watched you eat one of my pancakes and describe it as breakfast-adjacent masonry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was cinnamon drywall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a flavor profile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stepped past them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was structurally unsound.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pointed at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou had one bite.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was enough to form a professional opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane followed them out toward the Humvee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFine. We are going to IHOP. I am getting pancakes that do not require a permit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel slid into the passenger seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have no appreciation for culinary risks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane settled behind the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI appreciate food that bends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark climbed into the rear seat and pulled his seatbelt across his chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlease keep this argument at a conversational volume until we leave the driveway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel turned in his seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is a very specific request.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou both have very specific voices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Humvee engine turned over with its familiar heavy growl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane backed down the gravel drive, sunlight flashing across the windshield, and pointed the nose east toward Edmond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first ten minutes, the morning belonged to the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trees gave way to open pasture. Open pasture gave way to subdivisions, gas stations, small churches, and the gradual sprawl of the city. The Humvee moved steadily through the Sunday traffic, larger than nearly everything around it and impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel had his window cracked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wind worked through the fur along his ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark had a navigation map open on his phone even though Thane knew perfectly well how to get to Edmond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane glanced at him in the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know I have been there before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen why are you looking at the map?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTraffic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere could be traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned his head against the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMark is emotionally prepared for traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are emotionally prepared to be late for your own funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is because I am confident I will make an entrance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane snorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he looked over at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane knew the tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He kept his eyes on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDetective Ninety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDetective Retest Miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s smile became innocent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am just saying, you really did turn it around.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked up from the navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, no. This is sincere. I have grown as a person. I am celebrating Thane\u2019s accomplishments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane tightened his hands on the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAre you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAbsolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then added, \u201cAfter that tragic first score.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expression on Thane\u2019s face was not angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the slow lift of one brow and the low narrowing of his eyes made Gabriel sit a little straighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKeep it up,\u201d Thane said, \u201cand you\u2019re riding in the back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked up from the navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI call window.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel turned slowly in his seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s mouth shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThought so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Edmond city-limit sign rose ahead on the right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane slowed with the flow of traffic as the highway widened, commercial buildings replacing the last open stretches of land. A car dealership sat to one side. A strip mall with a breakfast place, pharmacy, and fitness studio sat to the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Gabriel\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane had already seen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A silver Chevrolet Silverado stood crooked on the shoulder just beyond an intersection, driver\u2019s door open. An Edmond patrol car sat behind it with emergency lights flashing, angled badly across the outer lane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, it looked like a traffic stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At second glance, it was not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Edmond officer was on the ground near the front bumper of his unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large man was over him, driving down punches with both hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer had one arm up over his head. His other hand scrabbled at the pavement, trying to find leverage that was not there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A yellow taser wire stretched across the concrete beside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cartridge lay in the gutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s stomach dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He steered the Humvee onto the shoulder hard enough that Mark caught himself against the front seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOfficer down,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel was already unbuckling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane threw the transmission into park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMark, Gabriel, officer. I have the suspect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three doors opened almost at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane hit the pavement running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world narrowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to rage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to one of the old sharp places inside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the officer on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the suspect\u2019s weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the angle of his shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the next punch rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane reached them in three strides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He seized the suspect by both shoulders from behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man was huge\u2014broad through the back, thick arms, work boots grinding against the pavement\u2014but Thane\u2019s grip closed over muscle and jacket fabric with enough force to stop the next strike in mid-motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man yelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A raw, startled sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His fists opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane pulled him backward off the officer in one hard motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStop moving,\u201d Thane growled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man twisted instinctively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s claws pressed through the jacket at the shoulder seams, not breaking skin, but making the message clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The suspect froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s voice went lower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are under arrest. Do not move.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man looked over one shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saw the brown wolf behind him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saw the badge at Thane\u2019s belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saw the sidearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saw the claws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fight went out of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSit,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The suspect\u2019s breathing came loud and uneven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane walked him sideways toward the curb, his hands locked around both shoulders, controlling every step without jerking or dragging. The man stumbled once. Thane steadied him, not gently, but not cruelly either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The suspect lowered himself onto the sidewalk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane guided him into a seated position with his back against the curb, still holding his shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man\u2019s eyes kept flicking toward the patrol car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then toward Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not move,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not moving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind him, Gabriel and Mark were already with the officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Edmond officer had rolled onto one hip. Blood marked his forehead and cheek where skin had scraped against pavement. His uniform shirt was torn at one shoulder. He looked stunned more than dazed, breathing hard through his nose as Gabriel knelt beside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHey,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cStay with me. Where are you hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer blinked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat the hell?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExcellent question,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cWe will put it on the list. Any pain in your neck?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy head.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny dizziness?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA little.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay. Do not stand up yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark was already beside Gabriel, his compact first-aid pouch open on the pavement between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He handed Gabriel sterile pads and a saline wipe without being asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel opened the first packet and leaned closer to the officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is going to sting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt already stings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen I am late to the party.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark crouched beside the officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOfficer, I am Detective Mark, Cross Timber. Can you tell me what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer took one slow breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTraffic stop,\u201d he said. \u201cExpired tag. That\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked toward the Silverado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI asked for his license.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe got agitated. Said I did not have the right to stop him. Then he got out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s eyes moved briefly toward the suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid he say why?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d The officer swallowed. \u201cHe came at me. I went for the taser. It didn\u2019t\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His eyes flicked toward the yellow wires on the pavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt didn\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pressed a dressing against the scrape at the officer\u2019s hairline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan you move both arms?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer flexed his fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny sharp pain when you breathe?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood. Keep sitting.
