He steered the Humvee onto the shoulder hard enough that Mark caught himself against the front seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perez lifted one hand from where the paramedic was checking his pulse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The three wolves walked back toward the Humvee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Traffic moved around the scene in slow, careful lines. The silver Silverado sat quiet now, driver\u2019s door still open, its expired tag flapping slightly in the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel climbed into the passenger seat and shut the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a moment, no one said anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane got behind the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark settled into the back, first-aid pouch still open in his lap. He closed it and clipped it back to his belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane started the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou were very calm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI had a job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark leaned forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane pulled carefully back onto the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Humvee rolled past the flashing lights and toward the restaurant district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a few minutes, the road was quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cStill, for the record, Detective Seventy-Eight-Point-Five would have been a great nickname.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane glanced sideways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel grinned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark made a tired sound from the back seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat? We are off duty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane\u2019s mouth shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI will twist off your head like a furry PEZ dispenser.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel leaned back against the seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere he is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The IHOP in Edmond was crowded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sunday families filled most of the booths. Kids colored on paper placemats. Coffee moved constantly between the kitchen and the tables. The smell of syrup, bacon, butter, and fried potatoes hit Thane the moment they walked through the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou are having a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is what pancakes are supposed to smell like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark looked toward the host stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou have not tasted them yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI can smell the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel pointed at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFood snob.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFood survivor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The hostess recognized them before she finished gathering menus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh my goodness,\u201d she said. \u201cYou are the wolf detectives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel smiled politely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have been called worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHave we?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNot by nice people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They were seated in a booth near the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before the server arrived, a little boy at the next table whispered something urgently to his father, who looked over, smiled, and asked whether it would be okay if the boy said hello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy approached with the grave courage of someone entering a dragon\u2019s cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAre you the guys from the video?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel leaned toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhich video?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe fence one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark covered his face with one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane looked at the boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy dad showed me. You jumped really high.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe has been insufferable about it since yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark lowered his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou absolutely have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCan you jump over this booth?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark answered immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel laughed so hard he nearly slid out of his seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane looked at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat was fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have learned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy accepted the answer with more grace than Gabriel had expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOkay,\u201d he said. \u201cCan I get a picture?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the time the pancakes arrived, the three wolves had taken two photos, signed a placemat, and accepted a small drawing of Thane jumping over a fence with \u201cWOLF HERO\u201d written above it in purple crayon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane set the drawing beside his plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel looked at the stack of pancakes placed in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Soft, golden, steaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Butter melting down the sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Syrup in a little metal pitcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane cut into them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fork went through easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He took a bite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel watched him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWell?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey bend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA strong endorsement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel stabbed at his own pancakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI still think the cinnamon ones were underrated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane poured syrup over the stack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou made breakfast insulation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel pointed his fork at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then at the drawing of a brown wolf vaulting a fence in a superhero crouch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His smile softened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYeah,\u201d he said. \u201cI can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Outside the window, Edmond moved through its Sunday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cars passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Families carried shopping bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Somewhere behind them, a child laughed too loudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The patrol officer was alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect was in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The pancakes were soft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For one more hour, at least, the world did not need anything from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
