We prefer \u2018beloved public servants.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not break stride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe prefer \u2018detectives.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the patrol officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He held up his phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the screen, Thane stood frozen in a perfect midair frame over the soccer fence from the day before. The video had paused at the exact moment his arms spread for balance, tail extended, claws out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone had added dramatic music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the top, in bright yellow letters, read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CROSS TIMBER\u2019S WOLF DETECTIVE HAS NO CHILL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned over to inspect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is an excellent angle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the phone, then at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou did not need to clear the entire fence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a safe landing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The patrol officer laughed harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is what the comments say. \u2018Safe landing. Ten out of ten. Would let him vault my fence.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears angled back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not ask anyone to post that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cYou just gave them material.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A records clerk leaned out from behind her cubicle wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy cousin\u2019s kid was there. She has watched the video seventeen times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeventeen?\u201d Gabriel asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark muttered, \u201cThat explains the view count.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clerk pointed at another open video on her monitor. This one showed Gabriel crouched beside the storm-drain grate at the park, listening with theatrical concentration before locating the lost quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The caption read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WOLF DETECTIVE SOLVES THE CASE OF THE MISSING TWENTY-FIVE CENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded gravely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a difficult investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt rolled into a drain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere were environmental factors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark passed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe suspect was gravity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pointed after him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSee? That is why he is the paperwork wolf. The children shrieked. No chasing people who do not want to be chased. No jumping near parking lots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou hear that? You are now subject to Mark\u2019s playground policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane moved on before either of them could make the joke worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smiles followed them all the way toward Investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So did the videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one desk, an analyst had the park clip paused beside a spreadsheet. At another, a patrol sergeant was watching the public video from Edmond\u2014a shaky cellphone clip from a passing motorist that began after Thane had already pulled the suspect away from Officer Perez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did not show the punches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It showed the aftermath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large man sitting rigidly at the curb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane standing behind him with both hands locked on the man\u2019s shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel and Mark kneeling beside the injured Edmond officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video had no audio for the first few seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the person filming whispered, \u201cOh my God, that\u2019s those wolf detectives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A different patrol officer looked up from the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEdmond Watch Commander sent our captain a courtesy memo around noon. Said your statements were clean, your scene handoff was clean, and you saved one of their officers from a bad beating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOfficer Perez had minor injuries. He was transported for evaluation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah,\u201d the officer said. \u201cI heard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s expression lost some of its brightness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood. You may need to write it down and submit it in triplicate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The patrol officer laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane gave Gabriel a look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled sweetly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOff duty behavior is not covered by the same professional standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt absolutely is,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen I am in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are always in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is what makes life interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They reached the Investigations Bureau door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside, the day shift was still present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Detective Voss stood near the central case board with a coffee in one hand and a file in the other. We have been summoned before the council.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at Mercer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTechnically, he is one person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel lowered his voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen it is a very judgmental council.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can hear you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course you can,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cYou are a Deputy Chief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk glanced over his tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCongratulations.
