You have the board.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane looked around the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The day-shift files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The empty chairs Voss and Rusk would leave behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their own desks beyond the glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their own phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their own radio traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It felt different this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because they had been told they were detectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because the room was actually becoming theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rusk stood and gathered his tablet, jacket, and empty coffee cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf nothing catches fire, bleeds, disappears, or runs from patrol, try to keep it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat is an aggressively low bar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt is a bar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Voss picked up her coffee and case files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the door, she paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMorning handoff at zero-six-thirty. Mark, timeline and evidence status. Gabriel, witness and interview issues. Thane, scene actions, active leads, and anything that still does not fit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel gave a lazy salute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBright and early. Or at least technically morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane said, \u201cWe will have it ready.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rusk opened the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGood. Because I like sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Voss followed him toward the hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then stopped beside Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWalk with me a second.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They moved a few steps away from the others, near the narrow window that looked over the employee lot. The last of the daylight was fading now.
