{"id":17,"date":"2026-06-17T11:41:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T16:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/threewerewolves.com\/nightshift\/?p=17"},"modified":"2026-06-19T17:15:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T22:15:12","slug":"chapter-3-strength-is-easy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/threewerewolves.com\/nightshift\/archives\/17","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 3 \u2014 Strength Is Easy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou said we were keeping this low-profile,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane shut off the Humvee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engine died with a rough metallic shudder that rolled across the parking lot, bounced off the brick front of the training annex, and made two young men near the entrance turn around like something had exploded politely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is low-profile,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked through the windshield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Humvee sat angled across three parking spaces, matte green, broad as a small building, and about as subtle as a riot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark leaned forward from the back seat and studied the painted lines beneath them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are taking up three spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s a design flaw,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a parking lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel opened his door. \u201cTo be fair, if your goal was to arrive without anyone noticing, bringing the military vehicle was inspired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stepped out onto the pavement, clawed feet landing with a soft scrape against the asphalt. \u201cWe are not hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Gabriel said, climbing down from the passenger side. \u201cThe Humvee helped with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark got out last, folder in one hand, phone in the other, gray and white fur already too neat for the situation. He shut the heavy rear door and gave the Humvee a long, resigned look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI still think we should have taken the Xterra.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou always think we should take the Xterra,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt fits in one parking space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt complains more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt does not complain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has opinions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel walked around the front of the Humvee and looked at the three crooked parking spaces again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Humvee has a manifesto.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark opened his mouth, probably to explain the difference between mechanical reliability and owner projection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane pointed at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark closed his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They stood there for a moment in the pale evening light, three werewolves in a law enforcement training center parking lot, surrounded by sedans, pickup trucks, a couple of municipal SUVs, and one very nervous-looking compact car that had the misfortune of being parked beside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The building itself was not impressive. Low brick, tinted windows, a flagpole out front, and a sign that read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cross Timber Public Safety Training Annex<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beneath that, on a temporary board with black plastic letters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING INFORMATIONAL SESSION \u2014 6:30 PM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at the sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe go in,\u201d he said. \u201cWe listen. We leave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded. \u201cThat remains the official lie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is not a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark glanced at his phone. \u201cWe are six minutes early.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears angled back. \u201cFor informational purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cWouldn\u2019t want to be late to the thing we are not interested in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane growled and started toward the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two young men near the doors tried very hard not to stare as the three of them approached. One did a poor job. The other did worse. Both were maybe early twenties, human, clean-cut, gym-built in the way people were when they still believed muscle solved most problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One wore a polo shirt tucked too neatly into jeans. The other had a buzz cut and a veteran\u2019s posture, shoulders back, eyes sharp, chin lifted like a challenge he had not been asked to issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane ignored them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded politely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That somehow made them look even more uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside, the annex smelled like floor wax, printer toner, old coffee, stress, and nervous ambition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane hated it immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lobby had a reception desk, a bulletin board covered in flyers, framed photos of graduating academy classes, and a row of plastic chairs clearly designed by someone who hated bodies with knees. A few applicants stood around in loose clusters. Some wore business casual. Some wore department polos. One woman in dark jeans and a plain green jacket leaned against the wall with her arms crossed, watching the room like she had already decided where every exit was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her eyes went to Thane first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She did not look away quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The receptionist did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She looked up from her computer, froze for half a second, then recovered with the brittle smile of someone whose customer service training had not included werewolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood evening,\u201d she said. \u201cAre you here for the informational session?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel glanced back at the sign outside through the glass doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, ma\u2019am,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re here to discuss ballroom rental.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The receptionist blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane pointed one claw at Gabriel without looking at him. \u201cIgnore him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost people do,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stepped forward before the receptionist could decide whether to laugh or call someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are here for the CLEET informational session,\u201d he said. \u201cI registered us online.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane turned slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou did what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark kept his eyes on the receptionist. \u201cInformationally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not a word.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The receptionist typed something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNames?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThane, Gabriel, and Mark,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The receptionist waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark waited back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a moment, she cleared her throat. \u201cLast names?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned slightly toward Thane. \u201cAnd there it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears angled back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, very evenly, \u201cWe generally just use first names.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The receptionist\u2019s smile strained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI need something for the sign-in sheet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel placed one hand on the counter. \u201cCould write \u2018the wolves Voss warned everybody about.\u2019 That may already be in the system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A voice from the hallway behind the desk said, \u201cIt is now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The receptionist relaxed so visibly that Thane immediately looked past her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A man stood in the hallway with a Styrofoam cup in one hand and a file folder in the other. Late forties, maybe early fifties. Medium height. Square build. Close-cropped hair going gray at the temples. A mustache that looked less decorative than structural. His dark blue polo had an embroidered training division logo on it. His belt carried a radio, keys, and the exhausted authority of someone who had spent years telling young men not to mistake confidence for competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then toward the glass doors and the Humvee outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou parked the tank?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHumvee,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man sipped his coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid it come with parking instructions?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cWe can move it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d the man said. \u201cLeave it. If anyone steals it, I want to meet them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s smile widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man turned to the receptionist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She looked relieved enough that it might have hurt his feelings if he had not already expected it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stepped into the lobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSergeant Hale,\u201d he said. \u201cTraining coordinator. Voss said you might show.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears lifted slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMight?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe said one of you would refuse, one of you would make jokes, and one of you would register everybody before admitting interest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Hale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale took another sip of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe also said the brown one would be the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel made a pleased sound. \u201cAccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not the problem,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale looked him up and down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re standing in my lobby barefoot with claws on your hands, teeth in your mouth, and a military vehicle across three spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane narrowed his eyes. \u201cYour chairs are too small.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDidn\u2019t ask about the chairs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were going to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale\u2019s mouth twitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the ghost of one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRoom B,\u201d he said, turning. \u201cTry not to scare anyone who hasn\u2019t earned it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned toward Mark as they followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI like him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou like anyone who insults Thane efficiently,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes. I respect craftsmanship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Room B smelled like dry erase markers and old carpet. Rows of folding chairs faced a projector screen at the front. A long table held stacks of handouts, cheap pens, and a coffee urn that looked like it had been here since the first misdemeanor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dozen people were already seated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation thinned as the three werewolves entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane felt it pass through the room like cold air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was used to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That did not make it invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people stared openly. Some looked away too fast. One older man in a sheriff\u2019s office polo gave them a slow, appraising look and then returned to his handout as if deciding they were not his problem tonight. The woman in the green jacket from the lobby chose a seat near the side wall, one chair away from the aisle, where she could see the door and the front of the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smart seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark noticed too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel noticed Mark noticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane noticed both and wished everyone would stop noticing things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale walked to the front and looked at the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at the chairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re rated for three hundred pounds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel turned to Thane. \u201cHow honest are we being tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane growled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark raised one hand slightly. \u201cIs standing acceptable?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale nodded. \u201cStanding is encouraged if the alternative is paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane crossed his arms and took a place along the back wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stood beside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark hesitated, then took one of the chairs near the aisle after testing it with careful dignity. It creaked but held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned down. \u201cBrave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cQuiet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHistoric moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cQuiet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale set his folder on the front table and looked over the room again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll right. Let\u2019s start.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lights dimmed halfway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The projector screen came on with a slide titled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING: EXPECTATIONS, REQUIREMENTS, REALITY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel whispered, \u201cReality sounds ominous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt should,\u201d Hale said from the front without looking at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s eyebrows lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane smirked despite himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale clicked to the next slide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy name is Sergeant Daniel Hale. I coordinate pre-academy outreach, agency training support, and occasionally babysit people who watched too many police shows and decided a badge looked fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few nervous laughs moved through the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale did not smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you came here because you want power, leave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room quieted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you came here because you like winning arguments, leave. If you came here because you think people will respect you once you have a badge, leave now and save everyone trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane shifted his weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s expression sharpened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stopped looking at the handout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale walked slowly in front of the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis job is not about being the strongest person in the room. It is not about being the loudest. It is not about being the most certain. In fact, those things will get you in trouble faster than fear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His eyes moved across the applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They landed on Thane for half a second longer than necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course he noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStrength is easy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room seemed to lean toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAuthority is not. Restraint is not. Writing down exactly what happened after your adrenaline crashes is not. Standing in court while an attorney tries to make you sound like an idiot is not. Knocking on a parent\u2019s door at two in the morning is not. Brent stood near his truck, staring down at his phone, no longer quite as tall as he had been an hour before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world had not changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cross Timber still had locked doors, bad roads, missing posters, porch lights, court dates, unanswered calls, and people who believed the dark belonged to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But something had shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane hated that most of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He climbed into the Humvee and shut the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked over. \u201cWe are absolutely not applying?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said from the back, \u201cThat answer had a pause.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt did not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt did,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane started the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Humvee rumbled awake, loud enough to make a man on the sidewalk turn around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane backed carefully out of the three spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course he noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are driving between the lines,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane pulled onto the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShut up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled out the window at the darkening city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s his indoor voice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark made the smallest amused sound from the back seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane growled, but there was no bite in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The training annex disappeared behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead, Cross Timber\u2019s streetlights blinked on one by one, small islands of gold against the coming night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had not applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had not agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had not crossed the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for the second time in a week, they had walked right up to it and looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this time, none of them had stepped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cYou said we were keeping this low-profile,\u201d Gabriel said.
