They reviewed a minor hit-and-run report from patrol, helped Dispatch narrow the location of a stranded motorist whose phone battery was nearly dead, and spent twenty minutes confirming that a warehouse alarm had been caused by a loose loading-bay door in the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing bled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing ran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing caught fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By four in the morning, Gabriel had declared the night \u201csuspiciously cooperative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By four-thirty, Mark had corrected the phrasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA cooperative night is not suspicious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is if we are working it,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked up from his report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not say that like the city hates us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe city loves us,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cThe city also keeps handing us people with knives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not look away from his laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne person with a knife.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne person tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is still too many.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane went back to typing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the whiteboard behind them, two active case cards had changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WESTFIELD PHARMACY BURGLARY<\/strong> now carried the black Subaru\u2019s plate number, two suspects\u2019 names, a note for the recovered medication, and an evidence-request line that stretched halfway across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beside it, <strong>INDUSTRIAL CORRIDOR CONVERTER THEFTS<\/strong> had new markings: the three recovered converters, the likely vehicle, the tools, and a pending inventory comparison from the tire shop and landscaping company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither case was finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not legally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pharmacy medications still needed to be verified by inventory. The cash had to be counted and sourced. The firearm needed a serial-number return, a trace request, and ballistic review. The false identification card needed to be matched to its owner and connected to the driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The converters needed lab confirmation and victim identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The suspects needed to be interviewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Search warrants might still be necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the road existed now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the road was solid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At five-thirty, Mark finished the evidence-status sheet for the third time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel watched him from across the desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know it is not going to get more correct because you stare at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not look up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt may become more readable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a table.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has six evidence categories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has color coding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe color coding is useful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane read the page over Mark\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned back in his chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are both terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark clicked the final file into the shared case folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWestfield summary is complete. Evidence status is current as of zero-five-thirty-eight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane glanced at the clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDay shift gets here in less than an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stood and stretched until his back gave a soft series of pops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood. I am ready to hand somebody else the paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are still doing your supplemental narrative,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel froze halfway through the stretch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought I was done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have not completed your statement regarding the knife.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at his palm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wound had closed completely now. Delivery trucks moved through the industrial district while most of the city still slept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At six-twenty, Voss came through the Investigations Bureau door with coffee in one hand and a legal pad tucked beneath her arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk followed her, carrying two coffees, a breakfast sandwich, and the expression of a man who had not yet decided whether the day was worth participating in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looked at the whiteboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looked at the evidence-status sheet on Mark\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looked at the stack of reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then looked at the three wolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned back in his chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had a productive night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk stared at the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were supposed to be doing a quiet patrol-support shift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe did patrol support,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cVery successfully.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss set her coffee down near the conference table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMorning handoff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel straightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark opened his notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stood and carried the main case file to the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not a performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one had to impress anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work spoke for itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss took the chair at the end of the table. No observed contact. No suspicious vehicles. No fresh indicators of the respondent near either location. Patrol completed two additional checks after midnight. Same result.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDana?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo direct contact from us,\u201d Mark said. \u201cNo reason to disturb her. Her family was present. Patrol has the active location and knows the history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood,\u201d Voss said. \u201cIt stays active. Day shift can make a non-emergency follow-up later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk pointed with his sandwich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnything from the masked numbers?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNothing overnight,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFine. Unit Two-Fourteen initiated the stop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring the stop, the driver provided identification that did not match his appearance. Officer Darnell asked him to step out. Nine hundred sixty-eight dollars in cash. One compact floor jack. One battery-powered cutting tool. Spare blades. Gloves. Three recovered catalytic converters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss picked up the photo of the cargo well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree,\u201d Mark said. \u201cOne has a visible asset mark consistent with the tire shop\u2019s fleet coding. Confirmation is pending, but the vehicle was operating in the active theft corridor and the tools are consistent with the method.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked from the evidence photos to the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo you found the pharmacy burglary suspects while they were carrying probable evidence from the converter series.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you say it like that, it sounds like we planned it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou did not?\u201d Rusk asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cWe mostly drove around and offended the laws of probability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe performed a targeted patrol sweep of active areas, identified a vehicle matching an active bulletin, maintained observation, and coordinated with patrol for a lawful stop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel considered that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour version is less fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is more accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Voss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cases did not fall into our laps. We knew the areas first.
