{"id":197,"date":"2026-06-25T14:37:04","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T19:37:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/threewerewolves.com\/nightshift\/?p=197"},"modified":"2026-06-26T10:28:54","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T15:28:54","slug":"chapter-40-a-normal-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/threewerewolves.com\/nightshift\/archives\/197","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 40 \u2014 A Normal Night"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 17:46, the Humvee rolled into the Cross Timber Police Department lot with the same deep mechanical growl it had made every night since Night Shift officially became a real thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It had not become less conspicuous with time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If anything, the department had gotten used to it enough that people now treated the oversized green vehicle as part of the building\u2019s personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A patrol officer walking toward briefing glanced at it, then at Thane easing it into the far end of the employee row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou taking up three spaces again?\u201d he called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo and a half,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer looked at the Humvee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOptimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel opened the passenger door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe has a complicated relationship with measurements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark climbed out of the back with his duty bag over one shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTechnically, the vehicle is within the marked boundaries of two spaces and partially overlaps a third.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are not helping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am clarifying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane shut the driver\u2019s door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt fits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt does not,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt fits enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s grin widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAh. The official Night Shift motto.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They crossed the lot together under the low orange light of the poles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evening was warm but not hot, the kind of Oklahoma night that still held daylight in the pavement. Patrol cars came and went from the far side of the building. Dispatch windows glowed behind the front glass. Somewhere inside, a printer ran continuously with the stubborn, irritated sound of paperwork being born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had barely reached the Investigations Bureau door when Voss stepped out of the hall carrying a coffee and a thin stack of files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looked past them toward the lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAre you driving your personal Humvee on shift?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss\u2019s expression did not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDepartment regulations require detectives to use assigned department vehicles for routine duty operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel made a very small sound beside Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It might have been a cough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It might have been laughter trying not to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Voss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is the only vehicle that comfortably carries all three of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind him, Gabriel went very still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears shifted once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss looked from Thane to Gabriel, then Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Xterra technically held all three of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very tightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three had once tried to ride in it in full duty gear after a training event. Gabriel had spent most of the drive folded halfway into the center console while Mark complained that the rear seat had been \u201cdesigned by someone who did not respect vertebrae.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It had been possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comfortable was another word entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss studied Thane for a long moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have access to assigned vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have access to a patrol SUV if needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have an Xterra.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s mouth twitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane kept his face straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd yet you are telling me the military vehicle is the only one that works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is the only one that works comfortably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel made another sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one was definitely laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss glanced at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSomething funny, Detective?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s expression became professionally blank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, ma\u2019am.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss sighed through her nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTemporary operational exception,\u201d she said. \u201cFor Night Shift transportation. Until Fleet gives me a department vehicle that can safely and practically carry three werewolves in duty equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s ears lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss pointed a finger at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not permission to treat it like a tactical assault vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked almost offended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe absolutely does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou call speed bumps terrain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are terrain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark added, \u201cHe has referred to a parking curb as a \u2018minor obstacle.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss closed her eyes for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not make me rescind the exception on the first night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled brightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will be very responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat sentence has never reassured me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She turned toward the conference room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNight handoff. Move.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The briefing board looked quieter than it had the morning before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was a relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Westfield Pharmacy burglary had moved from active emergency to active follow-up. The black Subaru was in evidence processing. The medication inventory count had been matched against the pharmacy\u2019s missing-stock list. The firearms unit had confirmed the recovered handgun had been reported stolen six months earlier out of Oklahoma City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The catalytic-converter thefts had not been fully closed, but the three recovered converters had been matched to two fleet vans and one landscaping truck in the industrial corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three thefts solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Possibly more to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The suspects had not talked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss stood by the board with Rusk beside her, both of them holding fresh coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked at Night Shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood evening, professional lottery winners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked pleased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was not praise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt had praise-adjacent energy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked at Voss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI hate that he knows that phrase now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou taught him,\u201d Voss said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI regret many things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark opened his notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDay-shift status?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss pointed to the pharmacy file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth suspects invoked counsel. Priya is coordinating with the county prosecutor. The medication has been verified. Nineteen bottles came directly from Westfield inventory. One was a patient-dispensing bottle from another pharmacy robbery in Oklahoma County.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s expression sharpened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo the Subaru may connect beyond us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPossibly,\u201d Voss said. \u201cOklahoma County has been notified. That part is out of your hands unless they request a joint follow-up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk tapped the converter-theft card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProperty Crimes got two positive inventory matches and one probable. They are working warrants for storage locations associated with the suspects. Again, not yours unless it turns into something larger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss moved to the final open card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDana Keeler.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room quieted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDay shift spoke with her this afternoon. No new contact. Her aunt\u2019s family is still keeping her there. Her ex\u2014Travis Heller\u2014did not report to work today. His employer says he called in sick. His phone is off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Voss said. \u201cIt is not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark wrote the update down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVehicle?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis blue Ford Ranger is not at his apartment complex. Patrol checked from the public roadway. He has no active warrants yet, but the protective order remains in effect. Any sighting near Dana or her aunt\u2019s address is a priority call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny family or friends we know of?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo,\u201d Rusk said. \u201cOne in Guthrie, one in eastern Oklahoma City. Day shift reached both. Neither has seen him. Both said he has been angry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAngry is not a location,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Rusk replied. \u201cBut it is what we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss closed the file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNight Shift, your job is not to hunt a man because he is upset. Keep eyes on Dana\u2019s locations. Keep patrol informed. If he shows up, you contain, protect, and make the arrest lawful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOther than that,\u201d Voss continued, \u201cthis is a normal night. Stay visible around the active areas. Drive the industrial corridor. Check the pharmacy district. Assist patrol when they need you. Do not manufacture work because last shift was busy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel put one hand to his chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe would never.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou absolutely would.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnly a little.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGo patrol your city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The night began quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not boring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane drove through Dana Keeler\u2019s neighborhood first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same porch lights glowed. The same trimmed lawns sloped toward sidewalks. A dog barked once from behind a fence, then stopped when it recognized the sound of the Humvee passing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dana\u2019s old house sat dark except for one lamp in the front room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her gray sedan was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her aunt\u2019s address was brighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family had left the kitchen light on. A television glowed in the den. Dana\u2019s sedan sat in the driveway beside the older SUV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No blue Ranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No unfamiliar vehicle at the curb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No scent of Travis Heller near the sidewalk, the mailbox, the driveway, or the narrow strip of grass along the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane drove past without slowing too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel watched the house through the passenger window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStill clear?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cClear enough,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked down at his tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPatrol logged a pass twenty minutes before ours. Same result.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane turned toward the industrial corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The streets widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The houses gave way to repair shops, warehouses, fenced yards, self-storage lots, and businesses with large signs that looked more tired at night than they did in daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The catalytic-converter theft corridor felt different now that they knew it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not haunted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not dangerous in the dramatic way television liked danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just full of places where someone could disappear if no one knew what normal looked like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tire shop\u2019s front security light still glared across the empty lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rear lane remained dark past the pallet yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rusted hinge on the utility-access gate was still rusted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The loose HVAC panel still tapped against the warehouse wall in the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel listened to it for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStill there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked up from the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course it is still there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThings change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot usually loose panels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane drove the full corridor again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not find a suspicious vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No fresh scent of cutting tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No engine idling too long in the wrong place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No new tire tracks in the gravel behind the fleet lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing out of place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was also the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city did not always give them a body in a locked car or a Subaru full of evidence. Sometimes it gave them a map, a dark road, and the responsibility to remember what had been there the night before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 20:37, Dispatch broke into the Humvee\u2019s quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNight Shift, Patrol Two-Seven is requesting your assistance at 419 Meadowlark Drive. Caller reports a cat stuck in a tree.
