A printer churned somewhere near Records. Patrol officers filtered through the lobby in pairs, carrying coffee, duty bags, and the tired expressions of people who knew their shift had not technically started but had already begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Humvee sat in its usual place at the far end of the employee lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too large for the lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too green for the rest of the cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too familiar now for anyone to pretend it did not belong there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane, Gabriel, and Mark came through the side entrance together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had barely reached the hallway outside Investigations when a voice cut across the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bullpen quieted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Detective Evan Kessler stood near the copier with a file tucked beneath one arm. He was human, early forties, broad through the shoulders, and usually known around the building for being competent, blunt, and not especially interested in anybody else\u2019s business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tonight, he looked like he had been waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His tie was loose. His eyes were tired. His mouth had the hard set of someone who had been replaying an argument alone for too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere he is,\u201d Kessler said. \u201cThe department mascot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few heads turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s ears shifted, but he did not move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stopped beside the case-board wall, expression neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Kessler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you need something?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler gave a short laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s good. Real calm. You practicing that for the cameras?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s face did not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are no cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, please.\u201d Kessler gestured toward the three of them. \u201cEverything is cameras with you people. The park. The cat. The officer in Edmond. The damn fence jump. Every time you walk out the door, somebody has a phone pointed at you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane kept his voice level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do not control that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Kessler said. \u201cYou just happen to be the story every time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room had gone very still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A patrol officer near the lockers looked down at his coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A civilian analyst stood halfway through opening a file cabinet and quietly closed it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler took a step closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou three get your own detail. Your own office. Your own special rules. Private armored clown car out in the lot. People bring you pie. Kids ask you to jump fences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s ears flattened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s eyes narrowed slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have a problem with our work?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler\u2019s laugh came out sharper this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour work?\u201d He jabbed a finger toward Thane\u2019s chest. \u201cYou got your detective slot because people love a story. I have been here eleven years. I have done homicide scenes nobody wanted. Child-abuse cases that never made a headline. I have written reports until my hands cramped. And then three wolves show up, everybody claps, and suddenly you\u2019re the future of the department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him for a long moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not take anything from you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler stepped closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou took attention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Thane said. \u201cWe got attention. That is not the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEasy for you to say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou think you are better than everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen why are you standing there like this is beneath you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears lowered a fraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause I do not want to fight you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That made Kessler smile without humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course you do not. You would break me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words were ugly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because they were entirely wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of how badly Kessler wanted them to be an accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s eyes stayed on him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not want to hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen stop acting like you are above me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler shoved him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not a careful shove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both hands, chest-level, full frustration behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impact barely shifted the fabric of his shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler stumbled half a step forward from the lack of resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone near the lockers let out a startled laugh before swallowing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler heard it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His face went red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel and Mark stayed where they were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because they were unconcerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane could smell the change in both of them: Gabriel\u2019s attention sharpening, Mark\u2019s weight shifting subtly onto the balls of his feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not intervening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not unless Thane needed them to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane spoke quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWalk away, Kessler.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler swung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A wide, angry right hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane lifted one open palm and caught the man\u2019s wrist before the punch reached his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No dramatic snap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No crushing grip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just a firm stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler\u2019s arm halted in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane lowered it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not do that again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler jerked free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou think this is funny?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He threw a kick at Thane\u2019s leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane shifted one foot back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kick passed through empty air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler lost balance for half a second, caught himself against the copier, and heard another involuntary burst of laughter from somewhere in the bullpen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That made it worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He came in again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quick jab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane caught it with two fingers against the back of Kessler\u2019s hand and guided it harmlessly away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler tried to shove him again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane took one step sideways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The force carried Kessler forward into nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He caught himself before he hit the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel made a small sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not laughter exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More like disbelief trying very hard to be polite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s expression did not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But his tail had gone completely still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKessler,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The detective turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His breathing was hard now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His anger had gone past the point where it made sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He lunged again, this time reaching for Thane\u2019s collar with one hand and throwing another punch with the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast enough that Kessler never understood exactly what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One moment he was coming forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next, Thane had his wrist in one hand and his upper arm in the other, turning him just enough to take away his balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane guided him two steps toward the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not slammed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not thrown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply redirected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler ended up facing the wall with his arm folded safely behind him and Thane standing close enough that the detective could not turn without permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire bullpen could have gone silent enough to hear a paperclip fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s voice was low beside Kessler\u2019s ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are angry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler\u2019s chest rose and fell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are embarrassed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler did not answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane loosened his hold but did not let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not make this worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one second, Kessler went still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then his shoulders sagged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane released him immediately and stepped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler turned around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His face was bright red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His eyes flicked across the room\u2014at the patrol officers pretending very badly not to watch, at the analysts, at Gabriel and Mark, at the scattered expressions of shock and disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody looked triumphant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That almost made it harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler grabbed his file from the copier tray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is bullshit,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he walked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not gracefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just fast enough to make it clear he did not trust himself to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bullpen stayed quiet for three full seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Officer Patel, standing near the lockers, said, \u201cDid he just try to fight a werewolf?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeveral times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few people laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not cruelly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not even loudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stunned kind of laugh that came when somebody had made such an obviously bad decision that the room did not know what else to do with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane let out a breath through his nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel walked over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know,\u201d he said, \u201cI have seen people make bad choices around you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was not a helpful sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut I have never seen someone try to punch you like they were mad at a vending machine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark joined them, notebook still tucked under one arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVending machines occasionally retaliate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you, Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane rubbed one hand across the back of his neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is having a bad night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s humor faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe tried to hit you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe tried three times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked toward the hallway where Kessler had disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was not trying to hurt you because he thought he could.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was trying to make himself feel less small.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words landed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane glanced toward Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then back to Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before anyone could say more, Voss came through the bullpen doorway with Rusk close behind her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She took one look at the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Gabriel and Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the copier with a stack of crooked papers beside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one spoke immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Patel looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDetective Kessler got upset.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUpset how?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe took a swing at me,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid he make contact?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel raised one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe made several attempts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeveral?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTechnically four,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree punches and a kick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked at
