The folder held Dana Keeler\u2019s protective-order case. The blue Ford Ranger had been added to the vehicle bulletin in red marker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TRAVIS HELLER \u2014 BLUE 2012 FORD RANGER \u2014 ACTIVE PROTECTIVE ORDER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane read it from across the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned against the wall beside him. Mark stood at the table with his notebook open, already writing before anyone had said a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss tapped the folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDay shift located no new address for Heller. His phone remains off. His employer says he did not report today. His landlord still has not seen him. The order prohibits Heller from coming within five hundred feet of Dana, her residence, her workplace, or the temporary residence where she is staying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s pen paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTemporary residence is specifically included?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes,\u201d Voss said. \u201cThe judge amended it this afternoon after the initial report.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not mistake that for a reason to hunt him,\u201d Voss said. \u201cYour assignment remains what it has been. Visibility checks. Patrol coordination. Keep Dana\u2019s locations safe. If Heller appears, call it in and let patrol make the primary contact unless someone is in immediate danger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnderstood,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss moved to the rest of the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The apartment-complex break-ins had not developed further. The converter-theft warrants were moving through property crimes. The pharmacy burglary suspects remained in custody and had both lawyered up hard enough that nobody expected an easy confession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The usual overnight clutter filled the remaining spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An overdue welfare check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A commercial-alarm location with repeat false trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A late shift at the hospital that had requested increased patrol visibility in its employee lot after two staff members reported being followed to their cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing that required a dramatic entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing that needed a wolf detective vaulting a fence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel lifted one finger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan we make that an official policy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnly because Thane needs structure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not need structure,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked up from his notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou absolutely need structure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded solemnly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSee? The paperwork wolf has spoken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss stared at all three of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGo work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first pass through Dana\u2019s old neighborhood was quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Humvee moved down the narrow residential street at an unhurried pace, its engine low beneath the soft sounds of television sets, sprinklers, and distant dogs barking behind fences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dana\u2019s former home sat dark except for a lamp glowing near the front window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No blue Ranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No unfamiliar vehicle parked nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No trace of Travis Heller\u2019s scent near the curb, the mailbox, or the driveway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane checked without making it obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The windows were cracked enough to let the night air in. He caught wet grass, old mulch, a neighbor\u2019s grill cooling from dinner, laundry detergent, and the lingering scent of Dana\u2019s old routines around the front walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing fresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cClear,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark logged the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPatrol checked thirty-two minutes before us. Same result.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel watched the house disappear in the passenger-side mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo locations,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aunt\u2019s neighborhood was only a few minutes away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kind of neighborhood where porch lights came on before dark and stayed on until somebody finally remembered to turn them off in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The house sat at the end of a shallow curve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its kitchen light was on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A television flickered in the front room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dana\u2019s gray sedan sat beside her aunt\u2019s older SUV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane slowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then stopped breathing for half a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the street, beneath the shadow of a large oak, a blue Ford Ranger sat parked against the curb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its lights were off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engine was running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The driver was still inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked up from his tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s eyes stayed on the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBlue Ranger. Across from Dana\u2019s aunt\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The truck sat just far enough from the streetlamp to make the driver hard to see through the windshield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the plate was visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark lifted his tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPartial matches the bulletin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot partial,\u201d Thane said. \u201cThat is him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wind shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smell reached him through the open window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sweat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Old cigarette smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anger that had been sitting too long inside a closed vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Travis Heller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDana?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInside,\u201d Thane said. \u201cNo sign she knows he is here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark was already on the radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNight Shift to Dispatch. Confirmed visual on Travis Heller\u2019s blue Ford Ranger. He is parked across from Dana Keeler\u2019s temporary residence, vehicle occupied, engine running. We are maintaining observation from one block south. Request two patrol units, discreet response.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dispatch answered immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCopy, Night Shift. Patrol units are responding. Keep the location.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane eased the Humvee forward and stopped at the corner where the truck remained visible through a gap between houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not close enough to provoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Close enough to move if something changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel watched the Ranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHeller knows the order was amended?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cServed electronically,\u201d Mark said. \u201cThere is a return in the system. He opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo he knows exactly where he is not supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane watched the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heller\u2019s silhouette moved once behind the windshield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hand came up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe a phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe a bottle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then lowered again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is drunk,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can tell?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeer. More than one. And he is sitting in a running truck outside the house of the person he is prohibited from approaching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat last part did not require wolf senses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first patrol unit appeared at the far end of the street without lights or siren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A second came in from the opposite direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They positioned cleanly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One behind the Ranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One angled ahead, leaving no easy path forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only then did their emergency lights come on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blue and red flashed across the quiet houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The driver\u2019s door opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Travis Heller stepped out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was taller than average, broad through the middle, wearing jeans, work boots, and a faded hoodie despite the warmth. His movement had the loose, imprecise rhythm of someone whose body had stopped fully cooperating with the choices his mind was making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Darnell approached from the driver\u2019s side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Patel covered from the rear quarter of the Ranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHeller,\u201d Darnell called. \u201cKeep your hands where I can see them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heller looked around at the patrol cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then across the street toward Dana\u2019s aunt\u2019s house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at the Humvee waiting at the corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His gaze landed on Thane through the windshield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something ugly passed over his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not doing anything,\u201d he shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell kept his voice even.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are within the exclusion zone of an active protective order. You need to step away from the truck and put your hands behind your back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am on a public street.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are five hundred feet from the protected person\u2019s temporary residence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not even on the same damn side of the street.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patel stepped closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHeller, hands behind your back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He laughed once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A short, bitter sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou people got the wolves out here because I parked my truck?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane watched him from the corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s ears flattened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not react outwardly, but his eyes had gone very still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell said, \u201cThis is not about the detectives. This is about you violating a court order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not touch her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one said you did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe ruined my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHands behind your back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heller\u2019s shoulders rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His fists clenched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one bad second, Thane thought he might try to get back into the truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, Heller took a step toward the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patel closed distance immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heller stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because he wanted to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because there was nowhere left to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell cuffed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The metal clicked around Heller\u2019s wrists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He swore loudly enough that the aunt\u2019s porch curtain moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel saw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDana is still inside,\u201d he murmured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patel opened the rear door of her patrol unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWatch your head.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heller twisted away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGet off me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not pull away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI said get off\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He jerked hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell had one hand on his upper arm, guiding him toward the back seat.
