That is an ambush.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel sat at the far end with both hands wrapped around his coffee mug, black fur still slightly ruffled from sleep, blue eyes bright with the quiet joy of a man watching disaster unfold from a safe distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo be fair,\u201d Gabriel said, \u201cit is a very organized ambush.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat does not make it better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt makes it Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark adjusted one of the pens so it lined up with the folder beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have until noon if we want these submitted today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears angled back, but he held his ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel took a sip of coffee. \u201cThat was almost casual. He had not slept well. None of them had. Recommend Xterra for first official appointment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane slowly looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears dipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is practical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou put my truck in an application folder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt may come up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow would my truck come up?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel raised one hand. \u201cIt did take up three parking spaces and emotionally affect a receptionist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Humvee did not emotionally affect anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt changed her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark cleared his throat. \u201cThere are also notes on seating accommodations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane flipped the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chair weight rating<\/strong><br><strong>Table height<\/strong><br><strong>No shoe requirement possible due to anatomy<\/strong><br><strong>Flooring traction concerns<\/strong><br><strong>Doorway clearance in older municipal buildings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned over to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, that\u2019s not bad. No joke underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we\u2019re not doing it, we\u2019re not doing it. We burn the forms, delete Mark\u2019s scans, and never talk about Hale\u2019s stupid chairs again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears angled slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked from one to the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rain ticked against the glass. Outside, the woods were gray and wet, every branch darkened, every leaf holding drops of water like the whole world had paused before deciding whether to fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane hated how quiet the house got when truth walked in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut if we are doing it,\u201d he said, \u201cthen we should stop insulting Mark\u2019s office supplies and admit we\u2019re doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have not insulted the office supplies,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou threatened a clipboard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat clipboard knows what it did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark sighed. \u201cThe clipboard has been professional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane rubbed both hands over his face, claws dragging through the fur along his muzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is insane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t fit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery person in that place is going to stare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019ll make rules for us, about us, around us, and half of them will be wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Mark. \u201cAnd you still think we should apply.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not answer right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That worried Thane more than if he had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Mark said, \u201cI think if we don\u2019t, we keep being a rumor people use when they don\u2019t know what else to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked down at the forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we apply, they have to answer us. Officially. Yes or no. With reasons. With standards. With records.\u201d He tapped the top folder. \u201cI would rather be a person in a file than a shadow in a hallway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s gaze dropped to his coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That line had hit both of them. Mark had a talent for that. He would be quiet for an entire argument, then say one simple thing that made everyone else feel like they had brought rocks to a knife fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked back at the rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe sold a company so nobody could tell us where to sit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled faintly. \u201cTechnically, we sold a company because you almost bit a venture capital guy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe deserved it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe did,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane glanced at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark shrugged. \u201cHe used the phrase \u2018security theater\u2019 six times in one meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel raised his mug. \u201cThere are crimes of taste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane almost smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the quiet returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had built this life on purpose. The land. The house. The privacy. The right to walk outside as they were and not see curtains twitch in every window. The freedom to work when they chose, consult when they wanted, ignore calls when they did not. They had enough money to say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was rarer than werewolf blood, some days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And now they were talking about voluntarily walking into background checks, medical evaluations, interviews, rules, uniforms, policies, and people with opinions about their claws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the folders again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat happens when they start digging?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s face went still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s humor faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There it was too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not guilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But lives had history. Long lives had more. Werewolf lives had things ordinary forms did not know how to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark answered carefully. \u201cWe tell the truth where the truth is required.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd where it isn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do not volunteer extra rope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled. \u201cThat sounded almost criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt sounded practical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt sounded like you\u2019ve been reading government forms for forty-eight hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane groaned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark continued. \u201cThere will be background interviews. Financial review. Criminal record checks. Possibly character references. Medical questions will be complicated. Psychological evaluation will be worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel lifted his brows. \u201cFor them or us?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane folded his arms. \u201cAnd you want to walk into that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That stopped him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to. I like our life. I like the woods. I like not having to explain why shoes are not an option. I like not being measured by people who start with the wrong ruler.\u201d His ears tilted back. \u201cBut Emma is home. And next time, maybe someone like her isn\u2019t. If there is a way to be closer before it\u2019s too late, I think we have to at least try.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stared into his coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane had no quick answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rain kept tapping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Gabriel said, \u201cI hate when he uses the child rescue argument.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is not an argument,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is devastatingly argument-shaped.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane exhaled hard through his nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He picked up the pen from his folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark went completely still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel watched him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at the first form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course it started with name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do I put for last name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark released a breath so carefully it was almost funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor legal consistency, use what is on your identification.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark added, \u201cEven if we generally do not use it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned forward. \u201cLook at us. Growing as people. Submitting to boxes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane glanced down at the form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was exactly what they were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little empty rectangles waiting to turn a person into a file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wrote his name hard enough that the pen nearly tore the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark winced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p pen in his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark silently slid him a black one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stared at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou prepared for my rebellion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have lived with you for years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For ten minutes, the only sounds were rain, pen strokes, shifting paper, and Gabriel making small noises of disbelief at government phrasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, this is wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not look up. \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don\u2019t even know what I\u2019m reading.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know your tone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel held up the form. \u201cIdentifying marks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark kept writing. \u201cFur color, eye color, scars, anything distinctive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked down at himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p Their lives clipped together in black ink and handed to a man who did not care if Thane could bench press a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The machine had not accepted them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it had noticed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was enough to make the air feel different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane opened the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are still not cops,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel opened the passenger door. \u201cNot even close.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark climbed into the back. \u201cTechnically, we are applicants pending initial review.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him in the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark lowered his phone. \u201cWhich is not cops.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled. \u201cBut it is several forms closer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane started the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Xterra rumbled awake, less dramatic than the Humvee but more honest about what kind of day it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As they pulled out of the lot, Thane glanced once at the annex in the rearview mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Low brick. Tinted windows.
