That was the honest answer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt was also the answer that gets us thrown out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel did not immediately deny it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That was how Thane knew it might be true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale came out of Price\u2019s office ten minutes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did not look pleased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He did not look angry either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That was worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCome on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhere?\u201d Thane asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cConference room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel stood. \u201cThat sounds ominous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The conference room was small, windowless, and colder than it needed to be. Hale shut the door behind them and set three folders on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not their application folders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n New ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane hated new folders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale sat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The three of them did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale looked at them for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMedical screening is fine pending accommodation notes. Physical assessment is fine pending equipment replacement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel lifted one finger. \u201cThe grip thing was not\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel lowered his finger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBackground review is not complete,\u201d Hale continued. \u201cThere are patterns. Not proof. Not disqualifiers by themselves. Patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel\u2019s expression stayed calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane felt anything but.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale tapped the top folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPsychological evaluations are preliminary. Mark, you got notes for over-control, perfectionism, high stress response when uncertainty is introduced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel whispered, \u201cShocking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale continued, \u201cGabriel, you got notes for deflection, charm under pressure, and a tendency to control conversations with humor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane muttered, \u201cShocking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel placed a hand over his heart. \u201cWounded.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale did not smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then he looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThane, yours is more complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The room lost its air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark\u2019s ears lowered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel\u2019s humor disappeared completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane stared at Hale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSay it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale folded his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou did not fail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat is not the same as passing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo,\u201d Hale said. \u201cIt is not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark\u2019s hand tightened around the back of a chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel looked away for half a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hale\u2019s voice stayed even.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPrice flagged suitability concerns. Voss. Price. Someone from administration.
