Long enough for people to realize the workplace is less fun without us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane opened his door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople have jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel got out and shut the passenger door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCruel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three of them crossed the parking lot together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing looked different at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same front windows glowed against the early evening dark. The same dispatch lights shone through the glass. A patrol officer came through the side entrance carrying coffee and a report folder. Somewhere behind the building, an engine started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they stepped inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And everyone stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not gradually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not subtly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The front-desk officer paused with her hand halfway toward a telephone. A records clerk froze beside the copier. Two patrol officers standing near the lockers stopped speaking in the middle of a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lobby was full of people performing the same strange, silent action at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staring at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stopped walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stopped beside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one long second, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It felt less like walking into a police department and more like walking into the first ten minutes of a deeply unsettling science-fiction movie, where the entire town had been replaced by something that looked human but had forgotten how to blink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked around the lobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUh-oh,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cThis cannot be good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dispatcher leaned out from the communications-room doorway, saw them, and immediately disappeared again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears angled back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy is everyone looking at us?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo idea,\u201d Mark said. \u201cBut they are not looking like we are about to be congratulated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel glanced toward the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe the Humvee finally got caught parking illegally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was within the lines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has never once been within the lines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMostly within.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The records clerk looked like she was trying not to laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, from the hallway leading toward Investigations, Officer Patel appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She saw them standing there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her expression did something complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not amusement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not quite sympathy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour office,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat does not sound reassuring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patel\u2019s mouth twitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour office.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane, Gabriel, and Mark exchanged a look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silence followed them down the hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People looked up from desks as they passed. A patrol officer near the break-room doorway visibly bit the inside of his cheek. Someone at the far end of the bullpen whispered, \u201cThey are here,\u201d in a tone normally reserved for incoming tornadoes or celebrity sightings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned closer to Thane as they walked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid we accidentally commit a felony?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause the vibe says felony.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked toward the open door of their office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhatever this is, it is in there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s stomach tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their office door stood open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And inside were Voss, Rusk, Deputy Chief Mercer, the Chief of Police\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the mayor of Cross Timber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stopped so abruptly that Mark nearly walked into him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His voice dropped to a whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs that the mayor?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mayor stood near the center of the room in a tailored navy suit, smiling broadly as though she had been waiting all day for exactly this moment. The Chief stood beside her, hands clasped behind his back, with the expression of someone attempting very hard to maintain a command presence while suppressing amusement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss stood near the case board with a coffee in one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk leaned against the filing cabinet, looking tired enough to have spiritually retired from the department three times already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer stood slightly behind the mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not look happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not look furious, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked like a man who had spent the entire afternoon being reminded that public goodwill was technically a good thing, while privately wondering whether the city might survive one week without the three wolves becoming the center of another impossible administrative event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane entered first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel came in at his right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark took position at his left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three of them stopped shoulder to shoulder in front of the desks, standing with the quiet, uneasy formality of people who had no idea whether they were about to be praised, assigned a disaster, or told to turn in their badges because someone had finally reviewed the Humvee parking footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel opened his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShould we\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without looking at him, Thane reached his right paw across and gently closed it over Gabriel\u2019s muzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked down at the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chief\u2019s mouth twitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk made a sound into his coffee cup that might have been a cough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane lowered his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel blinked once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then gave the smallest possible nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mayor looked delighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, please,\u201d she said. \u201cDo not let me make anyone nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked toward Mercer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat seems optimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer gave him a warning look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel immediately became very interested in the wall behind the mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mayor stepped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDetectives,\u201d she said warmly. \u201cI wanted to meet you in person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane found his voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMayor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlease, call me Sheila,\u201d she said. \u201cTonight is not a formal council meeting. Then a handful of national accounts that specialized in \u201cgood news\u201d clips and animal-adjacent content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It had been edited into short videos with sentimental music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It had been clipped into reaction compilations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It had been discussed by people who had never been within a thousand miles of Cross Timber and nevertheless had strong opinions about pie, homelessness, community policing, and whether Thane\u2019s stare at the phones had been \u201cintimidating\u201d or \u201chot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel had kept that last category to himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mostly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mayor looked at them with genuine warmth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have received more than a thousand emails since Friday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA thousand?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne thousand, two hundred and seventeen,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cAs of this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk\u2019s eyebrows rose slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mayor continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome are from Cross Timber residents. Some are from people in other Oklahoma cities. Some are from people who say they have not trusted police in years and were moved by what they saw. Some are from people who have experienced homelessness themselves. plaque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dark polished wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large ceremonial golden key mounted across its center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engraved plate beneath it read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CITY OF CROSS TIMBER<\/strong><br><strong>Presented to the Night Shift City.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a second, nobody moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s jaw actually dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s eyes widened in a way Thane had almost never seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stood there with his ears lifted and his mind entirely blank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mayor held the plaque out to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDetective Thane,\u201d she said, \u201cplease accept this on behalf of the Night Shift Detail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane recovered just enough to take it carefully in both hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was
