Mark sat at the far end of the long table with his laptop open, reviewing something from the Hawthorne case before shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The house was quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No radios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No sirens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No case board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just rain, coffee, and the hum of Mark\u2019s laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane had been thinking about Leah Moreno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the assault itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had been thinking about what happened after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calls. Or leaves a dangerous place. Or has to get out fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark thought for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are victim advocates. Shelters. Community programs. State assistance. Emergency funds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSometimes,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSometimes,\u201d Mark agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd sometimes there are forms,\u201d Gabriel said quietly. \u201cWaitlists. Business hours. No available rooms. Not enough money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rain slid down the glass outside in silver streaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at the bowl in front of him without seeing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeah?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPartly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd Ray,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s fingers rested on the edge of his laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople can need help before systems can process the request.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned back on his stool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo what are you thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane had not planned the words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They came anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we should make sure there is money there when people need it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither of them laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither of them looked surprised, exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s eyes narrowed slightly in the way they did when he had already begun organizing something in his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s expression softened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike a fund?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSomething like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor victims?\u201d Gabriel asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor whoever needs it,\u201d Thane said. \u201cVictims. Families. Somebody who needs a hotel because they cannot go home. Somebody who needs a phone. Somebody who needs a ride. Somebody who needs food before they start doing desperate things outside a diner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat could change somebody\u2019s whole week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe their whole life,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark closed his laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat depends on how it is structured.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course it does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not apologize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA properly managed fund could help with emergency needs without creating a system where people have to perform gratitude for the donor. It could be anonymous. It could use victim advocates, shelters, social workers, and qualified nonprofits to identify needs. It could be broad enough to help people in crisis without being controlled by law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pointed his spoon toward Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSee? This is why he is the accountant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not the accountant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have been the accountant since we made our first dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark considered that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am the most qualified person in the pack to evaluate financial structures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is accountant language.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane let out a quiet laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he looked between them again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA million to start?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is,\u201d Thane said. \u201cBut not to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words hung there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not arrogant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sale of Triad Sentinel Systems had changed everything years ago. The company had started as a small cybersecurity and systems-integration operation built by three wolves who had learned early that people underestimated them until they had already solved the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the company had grown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contracts became clients. Clients became national work. National work became acquisition offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sale had been more money than any of them had expected to see in one lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had bought the cabin and the land because they wanted somewhere safe, somewhere built for them instead of adapted around them. They had invested most of the rest carefully, quietly, and with enough discipline that they could have lived without working for the rest of their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they had joined the academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because they needed a paycheck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because they needed a purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned his elbows on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA million is still a lot, even for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut it could do a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark had gone still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane knew that look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Numbers were moving behind his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAn initial million-dollar endowment could support meaningful annual grants,\u201d Mark said. \u201cEspecially if part of the capital remains invested and the program has clear emergency disbursement guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTranslation?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt could last.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is what I want.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s ears lifted a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are Alpha. It is your call anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Thane said. \u201cI am Alpha. That means your opinions matter more, not less.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a moment, Gabriel said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not teasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cThen I think it is a good idea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI agree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven with the money?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s mouth twitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEspecially with the money. We have more than enough to be comfortable. There is no reason comfort has to stop with us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pointed his spoon at him again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPack accountant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am the pack\u2019s accountant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo what do we call names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not something that sounded like a campaign slogan or a corporation trying to make itself look charitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something broad enough to become more than one program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe through Thane\u2019s phone calm and clear, as if he had been expecting a call from three wealthy werewolf detectives at two in the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEli.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlease tell me this is not a criminal matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p was not my fault,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was mostly his could happen before bureaucracy caught up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel filled in the human parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot a system where somebody has to prove they are grateful enough,\u201d he said. \u201cNot a system where they have to sit in a waiting room for three days while they decide whether going back somewhere dangerous is easier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark explained the structure they wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Independent administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need-based criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No detective deciding who got money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No pack involvement in individual grants beyond identifying that someone might need urgent help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli listened without interrupting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFortunately,\u201d Eli said, \u201ccomplicated is what you pay me for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark leaned closer to the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat would you recommend?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA named fund inside an existing public charity,\u201d Eli said immediately. \u201cNot a private foundation. Not a shell organization. Not something you three control directly.
