The world had no right looking that calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind him, through the open kitchen window, he could hear Mark moving around the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not scanning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not stapling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark preparing nothing was worse than Mark preparing everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel appeared beside Thane with his own coffee, black fur catching a thin edge of gold from the morning light. Damp earth. Cedar. Red dirt. Leaves warming under sunlight. Somewhere out beyond the creek, a squirrel made the terrible life choice of yelling at three werewolves before breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane ignored it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mostly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel watched him. \u201cYou slept?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood. Badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark leaned against the porch rail. \u201cWe should leave in twenty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are taking the Xterra,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s eyebrows lifted. \u201cLook at that. Growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not giving the city attorney three parking spaces to complain about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded. \u201cThat is actually a good point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOccasionally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark drank coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel watched the trees, humor fading a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can still walk away,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark went still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s voice remained light, but only on the surface. \u201cThe folders are in, but nothing is sworn. Nothing is signed in blood. Unless Mark found a form I missed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo blood forms,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at Thane. \u201cWe can still decide this is more trouble than it\u2019s worth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared into the woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a version of his life where they stayed right there. The cabin. The land. The consulting work they accepted only when it interested them. The quiet roads. The privacy. The right to be left alone by people who did not know what to do with three werewolves unless they needed something lifted, tracked, scared, or fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a good life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had built it with intention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then a little girl had rung a doorbell at three in the morning wrapped in a green blanket, and the good life had stopped feeling like enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane set his coffee on the porch rail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked relieved, which annoyed Thane for reasons that were becoming less convincing by the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe go,\u201d Thane repeated. \u201cWe listen. We answer. Then we see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel raised his mug. \u201cA bold continuation of our official policy of not knowing what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cWe know some things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMark, we are three werewolves voluntarily attending a suitability review for law enforcement training after a medical scale surrendered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt did not surrender.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt flashed error. That\u2019s machine language for surrender.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stepped toward the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTruck. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cross Timber Public Safety Training Annex looked less harmless on a Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, it had been a place to drop off forms. On Thursday, it had been a place to listen. Today, it looked like a door with teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane parked the Xterra in one space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That made it worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They walked in together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The receptionist looked up, saw them, and did not freeze this time. That was either progress or fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood morning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel gave her a polite smile. \u201cWe brought the smaller problem again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She smiled back. \u201cSergeant Hale is expecting you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane muttered, \u201cOf course he is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the hallway, Hale\u2019s voice called, \u201cI heard that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned toward the reception desk. \u201cHe says that because he loves us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale appeared with a coffee cup in one hand and a folder in the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI say that because you\u2019re loud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the folder. \u201cThat ours?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo. Mine.\u201d Hale glanced at Mark. \u201cI don\u2019t carry your emotional support paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears lifted. \u201cI did not bring any.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded gravely. \u201cWe\u2019re all worried.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale studied Mark for a second. \u201cYou feeling all right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark sighed. \u201cCan we proceed?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMiracles first,\u201d Hale said. \u201cThen bureaucracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He led them down a hallway they had not used before, past classrooms, a locked equipment room, a break area with a coffee machine that smelled like old choices, and a framed poster about ethics that Thane found personally invasive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the hall was a conference room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The door was closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale stopped before opening it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His expression changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not softer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not a trial,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at the door. \u201cFeels like one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not. Nobody in that room is accusing you of a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s voice went dry. \u201cComforting distinction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale looked at him. \u201cDon\u2019t charm. Don\u2019t perform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s smile faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale turned to Mark. \u201cDon\u2019t over-explain unless someone asks you to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears tilted back. \u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Hale looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale said, \u201cDon\u2019t fight the question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s eyes narrowed. \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt means some questions are going to sound like traps. Some are traps. Some just feel that way because you don\u2019t like the answer.\u201d Hale lowered his voice. \u201cDo not win the room. Six chairs around it. Three chairs had been pulled away from one side, leaving open space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel definitely noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the far side sat Detective Voss, arms folded, dark hair pulled back, face unreadable. Beside her was Dr. Price, tablet in front of her, calm as she had been in her office. Next to Price sat a woman Thane had not met: mid-fifties, silver-blond hair cut in a blunt bob, navy blazer, reading glasses, and the expression of someone who could make a budget bleed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale gestured toward her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDeputy Chief Elaine Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer looked them over with cool, direct eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her tone suggested morning was a legal fact, not a promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beside Mercer sat another unfamiliar woman, younger, maybe late thirties, brown skin, black hair pulled into a low knot, suit jacket over a cream blouse. A tablet, legal pad, and three pens were aligned in front of her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale continued. \u201cAssistant City Attorney Priya Shah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah gave them a brief nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned slightly toward Mark. \u201cHer pens are aligned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark whispered, \u201cI noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah looked up. \u201cSo did I.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel straightened. \u201cStrong room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane almost smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale shut the door and took the chair at the end of the table, leaving the three of them standing opposite the panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss\u2019s eyes moved from Gabriel to Mark to Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She did not smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She did not nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But something in her face said she was glad they came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That irritated Thane less than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer folded her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you for coming. It is not academy admission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen what is it?\u201d Thane asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears flattened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s eyes closed for half a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer did not blink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a decision about whether Cross Timber is willing to keep investing time, resources, and liability into finding out if this unprecedented idea is merely difficult or actively stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI appreciate clarity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer\u2019s eyes moved to him. \u201cI have more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah spoke next, voice measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are obvious legal and operational concerns. The clouds had broken apart into white strips, and sunlight lay across the parking lot in hard bright patches. Conditions. Schedules. Concerns.
