He had been awake for most of the day, had eaten breakfast at a time that technically counted as lunch, and had spent the afternoon reading through two case files that made every snack in the cabin feel inadequate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that was not the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point was that the evening shift had been running hard for weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patrol had handled the pharmacy burglars. The vehicle-theft pattern. The protective-order calls. The festival crowds. The construction-site search. The string of strange home invasions that were not quite home invasions yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department was doing what police departments did: making do, catching up, carrying one another, and pretending the tiredness did not settle into everyone\u2019s bones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane turned into the station lot at 17:24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked over from the passenger seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are doing the thinking face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am driving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can do both.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark leaned forward slightly from the back seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat are you thinking about?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPizza.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then his ears lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPizza.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not what I expected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat did you expect?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not know. Burglary maps. Truck telemetry. The continuing decline of civilization. Not pizza.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane parked the Humvee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was thinking maybe we order some for evening shift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel turned in his seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll of evening shift?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark unbuckled his duty bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are approximately twenty-seven people scheduled between patrol, dispatch, the front desk, detention, supervisors, and support personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou counted already?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI began counting when you said \u2018some.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded gravely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is why we keep him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark opened the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not why you keep me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cBut it is a significant factor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane got out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHalf a medium pizza per person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stopped beside the Humvee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFourteen medium pizzas would provide one hundred twelve slices if cut into eighths.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou had that ready.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI estimated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you estimate topping distribution?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at them both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s ask Crowe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lieutenant Crowe was in her office with the door open, reviewing a patrol staffing sheet and drinking coffee that had clearly been poured before the coffee had any right to be awake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She looked up when Thane appeared in the doorway with Gabriel and Mark behind him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe narrowed her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy are all three of you standing there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have a question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is rarely comforting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWould it be okay if I ordered pizza for everybody on the evening shift?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a second, nothing in her expression moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she leaned back in her chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPizza.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor the evening shift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith whose money?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe considered him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are asking me because you do not want people abandoning posts or Dispatch getting overwhelmed while everyone crowds into the break room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her mouth moved very slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned around Thane\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a plan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat sentence worries me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFourteen medium pizzas,\u201d Mark said. \u201cThe order accounts for the number of scheduled personnel, dietary variety, and the likelihood that Gabriel will consume more than the average allocation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked offended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am a predictable consumer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are an excessive consumer,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe looked between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then back at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can order the pizza.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut,\u201d Crowe added, holding up one finger, \u201cit stays simple. No event. No announcement. No press. No fleet of delivery cars blocking the emergency lane. Dispatch eats when their radios allow it. Patrol rotates through. Nobody ignores a call because they are holding a slice of supreme.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnderstood,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd no pineapple.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are taking a hard line on this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo pineapple.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe looked down at the staffing sheet again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOrder it for eighteen-forty-five. If it gets there early, it sits. If it gets there late, it is pizza. Nobody dies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNoted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They turned to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe called after them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was a kind thought.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears tipped back a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThanks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe gave him a single nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then returned to the staffing sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane called the local pizza place from the hallway just outside Investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marty\u2019s Pizza had been in Cross Timber longer than the police department had occupied its current building. Its storefront sat three blocks off Main, between a hardware store and a laundromat, and its kitchen had fed half the city after football games, graduations, fundraisers, and every weather emergency that had knocked out enough power to make people suddenly remember food mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A woman answered on the third ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMarty\u2019s Pizza, this is Delia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHey, Delia. This is Thane from Cross Timber PD.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, Detective Thane,\u201d she said. \u201cYou all are ordering pizza?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have a restaurant. I know things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel covered his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane decided not to argue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFourteen medium pizzas. Delivery for eighteen-forty-five.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delia made a small sound of approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFeeding the whole shift?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood. They have been nice to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked down the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay. What do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stepped closer and read from his phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFive pepperoni. Three sausage. Two supreme. Two cheese. One vegetable. One half-cheese, half-sausage for dietary allocation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDietary allocation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt prevents waste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delia laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou got any allergies?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNone reported,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny special requests?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo pineapple,\u201d Crowe said from her office without looking up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delia paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then laughed again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCopy that. No pineapple.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane gave her the department address, paid over the phone, and hung up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou realize we are going to be known as the detectives who ordered fourteen pizzas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are already known as the detectives who bought dog toys, stopped a wedding dispute, and apparently sleep like fallen bearskin rugs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s grin widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStill mad about that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel lifted both hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot a word.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s phone chimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He glanced down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then his expression tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBrightNest sent a supplemental server report.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow?\u201d Gabriel asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked toward the conference room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBriefing first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss was still in the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was later than she normally stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day shift had technically ended, and Rusk had already disappeared toward the parking lot with the kind of exhausted speed that suggested he had heard no fewer than three people mention another late report before escaping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Voss stood alone in the evidence corridor with a file tucked under one arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane knew it before she said anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel and Mark saw it too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss\u2019s gaze settled on Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan I have a minute?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both of them moved on toward the conference room without a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stayed in the corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fluorescent lights buzzed above them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somewhere nearby, the evidence-room refrigerator clicked on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss held the file against her side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know it was you three.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He kept his face neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss\u2019s eyes did not leave his.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fund,\u201d she said. \u201cSafe Steps. The Community Fund. The way it appeared. The way Carroway appeared.
