The new Interceptors had already stopped looking new in the way that mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had dust on the tires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coffee cups in the consoles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little road grit around the wheel wells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One had a faint smudge near the rear hatch where somebody had apparently leaned against it while eating something greasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They looked better that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less like a delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More like they belonged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Grant stood beside one of the new units near the service bay, arguing with a Fleet technician about a radio mount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is too close to my knee,\u201d Grant said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technician looked at the mount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is adjustable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt adjusts approximately half an inch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is still adjustable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grant looked through the open driver\u2019s door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy knee is not adjustable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel climbed out of the passenger seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe it is emotionally adjustable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grant looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stepped down from the rear seat, glanced once at the console, and said, \u201cThe mount can probably move another inch if Fleet reverses the lower bracket.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technician looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grant looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technician sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI will check.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grant pointed at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSee?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark adjusted the strap on his laptop case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not say you were correct.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou said I might be correct.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI said the equipment may permit a revision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded thoughtfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is Mark for \u2018good job.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane shut the Humvee door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCome on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They crossed the lot together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The station was already active in the way it always was during the overlap between day shift and nights. The front desk had a small line. Dispatch chatter came in brief bursts from behind the glass. He looked almost unrecognizable without gray at his temples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blue folder sat in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He rested both hands on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is finalized,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stopped smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Officer Support Fund?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRed River completed the program structure this morning. They do not want the department thinking they cannot handle their lives. We know that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned lightly against the desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd we know a lot of good officers do not have a cushion when something goes wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded toward the program summary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA stable department should not depend on whether an individual employee can survive an emergency alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer watched them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane found the words carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe money does not mean anything if it just sits in a bank account. It is a number. It is an account statement.
