His shirt had a green smear across the front from helping move the rainwater tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOkay,\u201d he said. \u201cWe brought a lot of dirt home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Inside, the cabin felt cool and quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The clean paper towels from Target sat exactly where Mark had stocked them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pantry was full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The coffee was ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The den was comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But none of them went straight to the couch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First, they cleaned up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead, there were muddy clothes in the laundry room, towels on the floor, a trail of mulch near the shower hall, and Mark standing in the doorway telling Gabriel not to shake dirt out of his fur in the living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI did not shake,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou were about to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI was stretching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou were preparing to shake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane passed them both carrying a laundry basket full of work clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOutside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI am not a dog.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo,\u201d Thane said. \u201cYou are worse. Nobody needed a report or a case number or somebody to explain what happened next.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane took a bite of grilled cheese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPeople needed beds built.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark rested his spoon against the side of his bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe accessible path matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI knew you would say that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt does,\u201d Gabriel agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane looked toward the kitchen windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The light outside had gone soft through the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He thought of the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The little tomato plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The rainwater tank beside the greenhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cast-iron bench beneath the maple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pantry shelves Mark had made usable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kaden\u2019s small shovel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bri declaring strawberries superior to tomatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Renee saying good hands get dirty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt felt honest,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt was real help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane looked down at his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They were clean now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mostly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A little dirt still lived beneath one claw where the shower had not quite reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He could scrub it out later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For now, he did not mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The world had too many things that could not be fixed with one afternoon of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Too many problems that needed more than strong backs, cedar boards, soil, and willing hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But a garden could be built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A pantry could be organized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A path could be made accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Food could grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n People could carry boxes together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And for one Sunday, the three wolves had not needed money, influence, or a badge to matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They had just needed to show up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel finished his soup and leaned back in his chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNext Sunday, I am doing absolutely nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou said that last week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis time I mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane smiled faintly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel pointed at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDo not sign us up for anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane looked at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark looked at his tablet, which had been left on the counter all day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then back at Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI will not forward any volunteer announcements before Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel stared at both of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is how I end up carrying mulch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane stood and gathered the empty bowls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou carried one bag of mulch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI carried it emotionally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat part is true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGood day, though.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark took the last bite of his grilled cheese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGood day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Outside, the trees moved in the evening breeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Somewhere across Cross Timber, volunteers were probably still walking home dirty and tired, telling families about the beds they had built and the food pantry they had organized and the wolves who had carried things that should have required three people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But what Thane would remember was not the surprise on anyone\u2019s face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It would be the moment the whole group had moved the last wheelbarrow load of gravel together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nobody standing back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nobody waiting for someone else to fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Good hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And work worth doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Sunday started earlier than Gabriel believed any Sunday had the right to start.
