{"id":291,"date":"2026-06-28T15:12:56","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T20:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/threewerewolves.com\/nightshift\/?p=291"},"modified":"2026-07-13T15:50:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T20:50:30","slug":"chapter-61-the-face","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/threewerewolves.com\/nightshift\/archives\/291","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 61 \u2014 The Face"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time the Humvee rolled into the Cross Timber Police Department lot on Monday evening, the city had already decided what Thane\u2019s face was called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel knew this because Officer Darnell was waiting beside the front entrance with his phone in one hand and an expression that was far too pleased with itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane saw him before he finished parking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell had not said anything yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked offended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was just standing here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are holding your phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a phone. People hold phones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are holding it like evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel climbed out of the passenger seat and looked from Darnell to the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell\u2019s grin widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh yes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stepped down from the back seat with his laptop case, took one look at Darnell\u2019s screen, and sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe garden post is still circulating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is doing more than circulating,\u201d Darnell said. \u201cMy sister sent it to me from Tulsa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel rounded the front of the Humvee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet me see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell showed him the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hollow Creek Community Center had posted a photo carousel Sunday evening: the new raised beds, the rainwater tank beside the greenhouse, pantry volunteers standing in front of the reorganized shelves, the new accessible path beneath the maple tree, and the final group photograph with dirt-streaked volunteers smiling under the late-afternoon sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The caption was simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A good Sunday at Hollow Creek. New garden beds, a new accessible path, pantry improvements, rainwater storage, and a whole lot of people willing to get dirty for their neighbors. Thank you to every volunteer who showed up and worked.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The post had done well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comments were full of people praising the garden, the volunteers, the community center, and the three wolf detectives who had apparently spent a full day hauling material instead of standing around looking important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that was not the photograph Darnell had opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kaden\u2019s father had posted that separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kaden stood beside Thane in the garden check-in area, both hands lifted like claws, his little face twisted into the fiercest expression a ten-year-old could manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beside him, Thane crouched to his height, brown fur bristled, fangs bared, eyes narrowed, shoulders squared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The growl had been caught at exactly the right moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked terrifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kaden looked ecstatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The caption read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kaden asked Detective Thane for his best wolf face. I think he got it. Best volunteer day ever.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somebody had reposted it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then someone else had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the local community page had shared it with the caption:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cross Timber\u2019s official \u201cDo Not Mess With My Garden Bed\u201d face.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stared at the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, that is fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane groaned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell held the phone out toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has a name now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, it does not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt does,\u201d Darnell said. \u201cPeople are calling it the Kaden Face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned against the Humvee\u2019s hood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Kaden Face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not encourage this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the image with the serious concentration he usually reserved for crime-scene photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe composition is strong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane turned slowly toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou too?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not mocking you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are studying it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am evaluating why it spread.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel put a hand against his chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat might be worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell cleared his throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have not asked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are about to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell held up the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy nephew is eight. He saw this picture and told my sister he wants one exactly like it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell looked back with the shameless confidence of a grown man who had decided he was not above asking for a funny photo if it would make a child happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt would make his week,\u201d Darnell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the front entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at the lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at Gabriel, who had already taken Darnell\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled brightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, we are absolutely doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears tipped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCome on. One picture. It is for an eight-year-old.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell moved beside him, suddenly looking uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo I do the little claws too?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked him over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have to. That is the format.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a ridiculous format.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou asked for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell raised both hands beside his chest and curled his fingers into claw shapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are thirty-four.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have a mortgage,\u201d Darnell said. \u201cThat does not make me immune to joy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel held up the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThane, down a little. Darnell, closer. You are both looking like you are waiting in line at the DMV. Put some commitment into it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then crouched enough to bring himself closer to Darnell\u2019s height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell lifted his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane squared his shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bared his fangs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And let out the low, controlled growl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell, a fully grown patrol officer with a badge and a mortgage, immediately broke into delighted laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel caught the picture anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then one where Darnell managed to keep a straight face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the phone when Gabriel handed it over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe second one is best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell examined it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, that is going to destroy my nephew.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell tucked the phone into his pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are a good sport.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not tell anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI will tell everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDarnell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToo late.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He headed toward the patrol hallway before Thane could decide whether it was worth chasing him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel watched him go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is absolutely going to tell everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the photo again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour face does read exceptionally well on camera.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlease stop saying things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am trying to be helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel put one arm around Thane\u2019s shoulders as they headed for the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are Cross Timber\u2019s terrifyingly approachable community wolf.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Gabriel agreed. \u201cBut it is true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Bell was waiting in the Investigations hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had a coffee in one hand, a case folder in the other, and the look of a man who had heard something from Darnell five minutes ago and regretted absolutely none of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane saw the phone in Bell\u2019s other pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell looked innocent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not say anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are holding coffee like you are about to ask something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am holding coffee because it is coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pointed toward Bell\u2019s pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPhone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell glanced down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then back up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy granddaughter is eleven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane groaned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell continued, undeterred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe saw the picture this morning. She says you look like \u2018a forest boss monster.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel made a thoughtful sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is actually very flattering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell\u2019s mouth twitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe wants the same photo. I told her I would ask.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane held up both hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel took Bell\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is becoming a service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is not becoming a service,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark checked the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have six minutes before Voss and Rusk expect us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell stepped beside Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do I do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHands up. More commitment. You are looking like you are asking a question in class.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell lifted his hands slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo. You look like an accountant being robbed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell frowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have never been robbed by an accountant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have now,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cAgain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane lowered himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell raised his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane gave the camera the Kaden Face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell did not manage to keep a straight face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel took the photograph anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second came out better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third came out perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell looked at the screen, then shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy granddaughter is going to make this her lock screen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood,\u201d Thane said, though he sounded tired already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know, you did not have to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s expression softened a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane glanced toward the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause it makes people happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell looked at him for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel handed over the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow go tell your granddaughter she has excellent taste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He walked away toward patrol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel held up two fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnly two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked down the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A records clerk had just appeared around the corner holding a phone at waist height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clerk stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her face turned bright red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am sorry.
