Sometimes good store owners show up early.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler zoomed in on the receipt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNathan Vale used his actual driver\u2019s license. He gave the shop a residential address. He signed the consignment agreement with his own name.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy would he do that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause he may not understand the whole operation,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOr he thinks the paperwork protects him,\u201d Voss said. \u201cOr he thinks the people above him will take the fall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane studied the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tall man had his head angled downward. His face was obscured beneath the brim of a dark ball cap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the work shirt fit loose over narrow shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not polished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not confident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked like someone doing what he had been told because he had been told to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler brought up a second still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one showed the woman more clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty-something, maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dark hair pulled into a low ponytail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy polo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Khaki work pants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A slim black tote over one shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She looked directly toward the shop\u2019s front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her face was visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo we have her?\u201d Thane asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot yet,\u201d Kessler said. \u201cBut we have something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He switched to a separate image from the private mailbox center listed on the Clearview business card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mailbox rental had been opened under the name <strong>Claire Morgan<\/strong> using an Oklahoma driver\u2019s license that State Records had confirmed belonged to a real woman in Muskogee who had reported it stolen last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The application had a false date of birth, a copied signature, and a local phone number that belonged to Clearview\u2019s voice-over-IP account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mailbox-center camera showed the same woman from Cedar &amp; Brass entering the lobby two weeks earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy polo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black tote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And beside her, carrying a stack of flat-rate mailers, was Nathan Vale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSame pair,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLikely,\u201d Kessler replied. \u201cThe mailbox clerk remembers them because the man was nervous. No felony history. A handful of minor traffic cases. One misdemeanor shoplifting charge when he was nineteen, dismissed after diversion. Employment has been mostly short-term labor, moving crews, warehouse work, delivery contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFamily?\u201d Gabriel asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMother in Yukon. Younger brother in high school. Nathan\u2019s current address matches a monthly rental at the Sunset View Motor Lodge on the east side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk folded the sandwich wrapper he had not yet used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLiving in a monthly motel on temporary labor wages. Not exactly the profile of a criminal mastermind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Voss said. \u201cBut he carried stolen property.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane held her gaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe may have known it was stolen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe may have,\u201d Voss agreed. \u201cOr he may have been paid to stop asking questions. Either way, we do not decide his role before we know it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the still of the walnut chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHas Cedar &amp; Brass been searched?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot yet,\u201d Voss said. \u201cThe owner voluntarily preserved the chest, the consignment paperwork, camera footage, and every related communication. Property Crimes photographed it in place. The shop remains open. He did not realize the wording was wrong until later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd the Bells?\u201d Mark asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMarta Bell\u2019s father died in April. She and her husband were clearing his house for probate. The crew told them a cousin had arranged for furniture donation and document shredding. They took a military shadow box, a box of old coins, two filing boxes, a locked safe, and a framed university diploma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat did they leave?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTelevision. Dining room furniture. Lawn tools. A refrigerator in the garage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSame selection,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExactly,\u201d Voss replied. \u201cThings that looked valuable to a stranger were not the priority. Things that mattered to a person were.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room went quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk broke it first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat are you doing tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss looked at the three wolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCedar &amp; Brass. The owner is staying late to meet you and show you exactly what came in. Then you make contact with Nathan Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at the address sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKnock and talk?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes,\u201d Voss said. \u201cNo arrest warrant. No search warrant yet. We have enough to ask questions. We do not have enough to force the entire case into a bad decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKeep it clean,\u201d Voss said. \u201cHe is an identified seller connected to stolen property. That matters. But it does not tell us whether he is a driver, a thief, a frightened employee, or all three.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark closed his laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat about the woman?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKessler is working image comparison, rental records, account-preservation requests, and the site-registration trail with Property Crimes. We are not naming her until we can support it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked at the photo of the woman with the tote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe will make a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s ears lowered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe already has.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFind out how much Nathan knows.
