They will provide the rental agreement, payment records, GPS data, and pickup-return logs when legal process reaches them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell came over from the motel entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wore his patrol armor, radio, and standard duty gear. No \u2018just one thing.\u2019 No good-cop conversation on the way to the car. If he chooses to say something without being prompted, document it. Darnell holds the exterior walkway. Keep the room secure. We are not looking for a fight, but we are not assuming there will not be one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked toward Room 214.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe closed the folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne more thing. This crew has been comfortable walking into homes because they know what fear does to people. We do not bring that into this room. Come to the door.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a few seconds, the only sound was the weak buzz of the overhead light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A scrape across the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chain slid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The door opened three inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nathan Vale looked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had not slept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His eyes were red. His hair was flattened on one side, as though he had lain down and then given up on the idea. He wore the same gray T-shirt from the night before, now wrinkled and darkened with sweat near the collar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked at Bell first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Patel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the three wolves behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then past them, toward the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He saw the patrol units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He saw Crowe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He saw the cargo van.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His face drained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell held the warrant folder where Nathan could see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMr. Vale, we have a signed search warrant for this room. Step outside, please.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nathan swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAm I under arrest?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot at this moment,\u201d Bell said. \u201cYou are being temporarily detained while we execute the warrant. We will tell you if your status changes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nathan looked down the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then back at Bell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy lawyer\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell nodded immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou asked for one last night. We are not here to question you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nathan\u2019s eyes moved to Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel kept his voice else inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo other occupants,\u201d Patel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell guided Nathan into the exterior walkway, where Darnell waited beside a metal chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSit here,\u201d Bell said. \u201cKeep your hands where we can see them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
