Less floor wax, more coffee, paper, printer toner, wet coats, old carpet, and the faint metallic edge of stress that lived in police buildings no matter how many air fresheners tried to deny it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The walls held framed photos of officers, city events, community programs, missing persons bulletins, commendations, and one poster reminding employees to report suspicious emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark slowed slightly at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not audit their cyber hygiene on the way to the crime files.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were breathing judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a difference between judgment and concern.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot on your face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane ignored both of them and kept walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His clawed feet were quiet against the tile. Gabriel\u2019s were quieter. Mark\u2019s had the careful rhythm of someone trying not to look around too much and failing because every system in the building was probably already organizing itself into categories in his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the hall, Detective Rusk waited beside an open conference room door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had a paper cup of coffee in one hand and the tired eyes of a man who had once again seen sunrise from the wrong side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMorning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel gave him a small smile. \u201cThis where Voss hides the ominous?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked into the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That killed the joke gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s expression shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk stepped aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conference room was colder than the hallway. A long table sat in the center. On it were four cardboard file boxes, several closed folders, three legal pads, three pens, a laptop, and a coffee cup that already belonged to Voss by force of personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss stood at the far end of the table, sleeves rolled up, hair pulled back, expression unreadable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No Hale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No Mercer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No city attorney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No psychologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just Voss, Rusk, and paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somehow that felt worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stopped just inside the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss looked at Mark\u2019s folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark blinked. \u201cNo what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo outside notes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears lifted. \u201cYou have not even seen them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know you. Put it on the counter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou do not know me that well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss looked at the folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel whispered, \u201cThis is his use-of-force test.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark shot him a look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss pointed to a side counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark set the folder down with the care of someone leaving a pet at surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel watched it go. \u201cBe strong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is paper,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss waited until the folder was down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday is not training,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is not academy orientation. It is not a test you pass by being clever, strong, charming, or organized.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel quietly said, \u201cThere goes the whole room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He smiled politely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ve seen what monsters do in the dark. Today you learn what happens after the lights come on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss gestured to the open side of the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStand or sit. I don\u2019t care. Just don\u2019t rearrange anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears dipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel placed one hand on his shoulder. \u201cShe sees you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark shrugged him off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane remained standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned against the wall near him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the chairs, then the table, then the files, and chose to stand because apparently the day was already cruel enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk closed the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room seemed to shrink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss opened the first box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside were case files arranged in hanging folders. Color-coded tabs. Labels. Dates. Names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of it ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of it heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She pulled one file and set it on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a domestic assault case from two years ago,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears angled slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss opened the file but did not turn it toward them yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cResponding officer arrived on a noise complaint. Neighbor heard screaming. Victim answered the door and said everything was fine. Husband stood behind her. No visible injury from the doorway. No one wanted to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He knew rooms like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not as a cop. Not officially. But everyone who paid attention knew them. The too-clean smile. The person in the background. The air that smelled like fear and bleach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss slid a report across the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report was dense. Evidence collected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boring, at first glance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss tapped one paragraph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe officer wrote down the exact words the victim used when she first opened the door.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark read aloud quietly. \u201c\u2018He didn\u2019t mean to. I made him mad.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room went still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe recanted the next day. Wouldn\u2019t testify. Said she fell. Said we misunderstood. Said she wanted everything dropped.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut the officer documented the words. Documented the broken lamp visible through the doorway. Documented the neighbor\u2019s statement. Documented the victim\u2019s hand shaking when she signed the refusal. Photos showed bruising she tried to hide. Body camera caught the husband telling her to shut up from inside the house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk leaned against the wall, coffee forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss turned a page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCase held. Not perfectly. Not easily. But enough. He pled before trial. She and the kids left town.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat sentence mattered?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe said it and then took it back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople take back the truth all the time,\u201d Voss said. \u201cFear does that. Love does that. Money does that. Shame does that. A good report remembers what fear tries to erase.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s eyes lowered to the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s sarcasm was nowhere to be found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss let them sit with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she closed the file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is paperwork doing its job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She set the file aside and pulled another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis one is paperwork failing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second file was thinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That seemed like a bad sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss opened it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBurglary and assault. Suspect was guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss\u2019s voice stayed flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot probably. Not maybe. Guilty. We knew it. Victim knew it. The suspect knew it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel said, \u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd the case fell apart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She slid a court order across the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark read it first because he could not help himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His ears slowly angled back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSuppression,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him. \u201cMeaning?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark chose his words carefully. \u201cEvidence excluded.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned closer. \u201cBecause?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at Voss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBad search. Officer entered a detached garage without enough legal basis. Found stolen property and a bloodied shirt. Thought he was saving time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWas he right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat the suspect was guilty? Yes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Voss said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word cut cleanly through his sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss did not back down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d she repeated. \u201cBeing right is not a warrant. Being angry is not exigent circumstances. Being sure is not probable cause in a judge\u2019s head if you can\u2019t explain how you got there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss tapped the file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat officer was not corrupt. He was not lazy. He was frustrated. He thought the rules were slowing him down. So he skipped one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at Thane without turning his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe evidence was suppressed. The victim refused to go through trial without it.
