NO BADGE. Former flooring subcontractor. Worked through Rockledge Flooring at Marlowe Court for six months last year. Contract ended after billing disputes and repeated complaints about incomplete work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCriminal history?\u201d Mark asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNothing violent. A misdemeanor theft charge at twenty-one, dismissed after diversion. Two citations for driving without insurance. One small-claims judgment from a former landlord. No current active warrants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVehicle?\u201d Thane asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDark gray Chevrolet Silverado. Registered in his name. Older model. Extended cab. County plate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat match the runner?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot yet,\u201d Voss said. \u201cDo not fill in blanks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark opened the next page of the preserved packet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe personnel and contractor records show that Cole and Jessa were in a relationship for approximately a year. They broke up shortly after she was fired. He was not a Marlowe employee when she lost her job, but he knew the complex, knew the service-road access, and knew how turnover work was handled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the account logs again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo we know how he got the laptop?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot yet,\u201d Voss said. \u201cThat is why you are talking to Jessa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk took a drink of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTry not to scare her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is your contribution?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTonight, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss ignored him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSpeak with her. Her navy blouse had been replaced by a soft gray sweater and dark jeans. Her hair was pulled back in a loose knot that looked as though she had done it without a mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She looked exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not from lack of sleep alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the kind of fear that had been building for too long and had finally run out of places to hide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Thane, Gabriel, and Mark entered, she looked up immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAm I under arrest?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jessa\u2019s shoulders dropped a fraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat does not mean this is not serious,\u201d Mark added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She nodded quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane pulled out a chair across from her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need the truth, Jessa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot the version that makes you look best,\u201d Thane said. \u201cNot the version that makes somebody else look worst. I used it for work sometimes because the office computers were terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you use it to access the tenant system?\u201d Mark asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you save passwords?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jessa hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot written down. But it stayed logged in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWas that allowed?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word came out quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flatly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not defensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not trying to soften itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark made a note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy did you keep it logged in?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause I was always being called after hours. Someone locked out. Somebody needed an emergency work order. Somebody\u2019s payment got posted wrong. A resident saying a pipe burst or a child got sick and they did not know what to do.\u201d Jessa swallowed. \u201cThe office system was awful. If I logged out, I had to do multiple-factor verification every time. It was easier to leave it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel held her gaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd after you were fired?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought I signed out.\u201d She looked up at him. \u201cI really did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not know. I thought I did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark glanced at the device activity summary on his tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe account remained active.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jessa nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane leaned forward slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell us about Cole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a moment, she did not answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she let out a breath that seemed to have been trapped inside her since the previous night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was good at first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel did not interrupt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe worked long hours. He could fix things. He knew how to talk to people when they were mad.
