The house was quiet. Not asleep, exactly. A house with three werewolves in it was never fully asleep. It listened. It breathed. It creaked around them like old timber settling under familiar weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside, the trees held the last blue of night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside, the radio was still in his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not one radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dispatch voices. Unit numbers. Static. Nina saying, \u201cYou called the right number.\u201d Voss saying, \u201cTalk me through it.\u201d Hale saying, \u201cYou don\u2019t know where to run yet.\u201d Walter Reed whispering about lost mail beneath a concrete footbridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old man\u2019s elbow had felt fragile under Thane\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That bothered him more than the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because Walter had been weak. Humans were always weaker than they thought. Werewolves too, sometimes, just in more embarrassing places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It bothered him because Thane had almost used too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not visibly. Not enough for anyone to notice. But he had felt it, that first surge when Voss finally told him to help. His body had wanted to lift, carry, solve, finish. One hand could have hauled Walter up the slope like a duffel bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, he had used one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barely one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coffee steamed against his muzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind him, Gabriel entered the kitchen with the slow, silent grace of someone who had woken up before his sarcasm but expected it to catch up. His black fur was ruffled along one side, blue eyes half-open, expression somewhere between sleepy and suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at the coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re brooding before breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane grunted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel opened a cabinet. \u201cThat\u2019s ambitious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not brooding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, of course not. You\u2019re standing alone in the dark staring at trees like they owe you money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane took a drink of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel poured his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou saved a mailman and didn\u2019t eat a single policy manual,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cStrong night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked over. \u201cFormer mailman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the dining table, Mark said, \u201cWalter Reed. Eighty-two. Retired postal carrier. Dementia diagnosis. Located approximately forty-four minutes after initial call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel froze with the coffee pot in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked toward the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark sat there with his notebook open, gray and white fur neat, brown eyes focused, a pen resting between two claws. There was no folder. No binder. No tabs. Just the one notebook Voss had allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somehow that made it worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel slowly set the coffee pot down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWere you there the whole time?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwenty-two minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at Thane. \u201cWe\u2019re losing him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not look up. \u201cI am reviewing observations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou wrote observations at dawn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wrote preliminary observations last night. These are refinements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane walked to the table and looked down at the notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark angled it away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears lifted. \u201cYou protective of that now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is my only notebook.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel sat across from him. \u201cHe\u2019s bonded.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark ignored that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane read upside down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDispatch workflow. Radio prioritization. Scene containment. Scent translation. Officer response patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned in. \u201cAny notes under \u2018Thane did not sprint into the drainage ditch like an angry missile\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark turned a page. \u201cActually\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane pointed at him. \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark closed his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled. \u201cThere is definitely a section.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is not a section.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA paragraph?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel tapped the table. \u201cHa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane sat heavily enough that the chair complained. It held, but only because he had built it himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at him carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour appointment is at ten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith Dr. Price.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel took a cautious sip of coffee. \u201cThe woman who asks questions shaped like knives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s jaw tightened. \u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears angled back. \u201cWe can come with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe wants me alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor the appointment, yes. But we can wait outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark held his gaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s humor softened. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to make the whole trip by yourself just because the hard part is yours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at his coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sounded too reasonable for morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m driving,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded. \u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark closed the notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cI am not bringing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel blinked. \u201cWho are you and what have you done with Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stood. \u201cI am adapting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is becoming your most frightening phrase.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The psychologist\u2019s office looked even softer in daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That made Thane distrust it more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The waiting room had pale walls, low lamps, a row of chairs, a small table with magazines no one had touched honestly in years, and the same glass bowl of mints Gabriel had previously identified as a trap. A diffuser sent lavender into the air with grim persistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel eyed it as they entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe mint trap remains.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark sat carefully in one of the chairs. \u201cPlease do not start a conflict with candy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stood near the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel sat beside Mark and picked up a magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then immediately put it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark glanced over. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt says \u2018simple ways to reduce stress.\u2019 I don\u2019t trust it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The receptionist at the desk smiled as if she had heard worse, which in this building was probably true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A door opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Lillian Price stepped out with a tablet in one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThane?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pushed away from the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked up at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not encouragement exactly. More like a promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane followed Price into her office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The door closed behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Price\u2019s office had not changed. Same couch. Same chair. Same bookshelf. Same window overlooking the courtyard with the ornamental tree that looked like it regretted landscaping. The only difference was the light. Last time, the rain had made everything gray. Today, sunlight fell across the rug in clean rectangles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane chose the floor again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Price sat across from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStill not trusting the chair?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStill optimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She smiled faintly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She set the tablet on her knee but did not look at it right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow are you feeling this morning?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Price waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is a start.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnnoyed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlso expected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Price nodded as if this was a perfectly ordinary thing to record, though she did not write it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy annoyed?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause you\u2019re going to ask questions I already know are coming, and I still don\u2019t know how to answer them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat sounds frustrating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not a question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Price said. \u201cIt is an observation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane huffed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She let the silence sit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He hated that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, she said, \u201cTell me about Walter Reed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked toward the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was cold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cConfused. Thought he was still delivering mail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFound him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Price tilted her head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTry again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s claws rested against his knees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI smelled where he went. Gabriel heard him under the bridge. Mark helped read the tracks. Voss called it in. Officers held the perimeter.
