Price almost smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale held out a sheet of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark took half a step forward, then stopped himself with visible effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel said, \u201cCan we guess who?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark leaned in despite himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat accommodations?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hale looked at him. \u201cThat is literally the meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark nodded, pained. \u201cRight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter that, assuming nobody panics, pre-academy orientation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane looked down at the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The machine kept moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale pointed at Gabriel. \u201cYou\u2019re next if you keep talking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale\u2019s mouth twitched. \u201cSee you Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He started down the hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel called after him, \u201cShould we bring the Humvee?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They left the building under a sky too bright for the conversation they had just survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The parking lot smelled of sun-warmed asphalt, cut grass, car exhaust, and the faint sweetness of the mints Gabriel had apparently decided were safe enough to eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark walked beside Thane in silence for several steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That never lasted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat did Price ask?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane opened the driver\u2019s door, then paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel stopped at the passenger side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark waited near the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane looked toward the street. Cars moved past. Ordinary people doing ordinary things, unaware that one of the city\u2019s strangest applicants had just been told he was not safe and that this was somehow progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The memory of the radio sat underneath everything now. Dispatch voices. Unit numbers. Nina\u2019s tape line. Voss\u2019s command. Walter\u2019s shaking elbow. The knowledge that saying a thing out loud could turn instinct into help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
