He turned to Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cScene secure?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes,\u201d Mark said. \u201cCritical Incident has the store cameras. Grant and Serrano\u2019s patrol systems are preserved. The physical evidence is photographed. The weapon, casings, clothing, and witness positions are documented. The detectives\u2019 notes are in progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mercer nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief Whitaker looked back at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked at him for a moment longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then her expression softened in a way most officers in Cross Timber probably never saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initial statement room was not an interrogation room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was a small hospital conference room with beige walls, one table, six chairs, a box of tissues no one had touched, and a window looking out over the far side of the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane wore a plain dark hospital shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His torn duty shirt had been taken for evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His badge and sidearm had been secured under department procedure, then returned to the appropriate evidence chain until the review team cleared the scene portion of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He sat at the end of the table with a bottle of water in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel sat on the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Crowe stood near the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Across from them, a Critical Incident investigator named Leila Ochoa opened a notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was not there to accuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was not there to praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was there to record what had happened before memory and exhaustion began sanding the edges off it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDetective,\u201d she said, \u201cI need only the public-safety information right now. We will schedule the full formal interview after you have rested and medical clears you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWas anyone else injured by the suspect?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRosa Martinez. Clerk. Upper-arm graze and glass injuries. Evan Cole, stocker, no visible physical injuries. Suspect, fractured finger during disarm. No other injuries I know of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAny outstanding suspects?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAny additional weapons?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNot that I know. One handgun recovered near front aisle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAny evidence requiring immediate preservation?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cStore video. Exterior camera systems. Grant and Serrano\u2019s patrol recordings. Firearm. casings. bag. suspect clothing. my clothing. clerk location. bullet damage in front entry and shelves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDescribe your decision to move from cover.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane took a breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He looked at the water bottle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then at Ochoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe clerk was on the floor behind the counter. She started crawling toward the opening. The suspect saw her and raised the handgun toward her. Grant and I had no clear outside angle without risking her. I reported the line of fire. The gun was moving toward her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDid you fire your weapon?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo clean shot. The clerk was behind him or near his line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat happened after you moved?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe fired multiple times. I remained upright. I ordered him to drop the weapon. He raised it again toward the clerk. I closed distance, controlled the gun hand, redirected the muzzle away from people, took the weapon, and restrained him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDid you strike him after the weapon was secured?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDid you use force after he was cuffed?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
