It is public-service forecasting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss gave Rusk a look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He lifted his coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI said nothing about boots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were about to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Voss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan we work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She slid the first file across the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVarela is in custody. Property Crimes, Digital Forensics, and the county fraud unit have the larger investigation. They have identified sixteen probable victims across the four apartment properties. More may follow once the laptop and recovered records are processed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJessa?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHer attorney is talking with the prosecutor\u2019s office,\u201d Voss said. \u201cThe company is conducting an internal review of the fee waivers, access failures, and key controls. She has not been charged with the burglary pattern or the identity theft activity. At this point, the evidence does not place her in those crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not confuse that with the matter being over,\u201d Voss said. \u201cIt is not. But she gave us information that mattered when it counted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaya and Alana?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth are home. Both units have new locks, new access protocols, and patrol checks for now. No active risk. steady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane helped her settle the bag back into the scooter basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel checked that she had the right pharmacy number saved in her phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark wrote down the time of the call, the medication name as the customer had spelled it, and the fact that no theft had occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they left her with a cold bottle of water from the pharmacy cooler and a promise from the manager that someone would walk her to her car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 21:37, the Humvee rolled through the east side of Cross Timber beneath a sky still holding the last dull purple light of evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane drove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel had one elbow against the passenger door, phone facedown in his lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark sat in the rear seat with his laptop closed for once, looking out the window as the commercial strip passed by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tire shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A laundromat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dollar store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small taqueria with bright red Employee down behind counter may still be moving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane took the last turn hard but controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The store came into view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heritage Liquor sat alone at the corner of a tired shopping center, its bright blue sign glowing over wide front windows. A large ice chest stood outside beneath the awning. A delivery van sat crooked near the curb. One set of headlights shone from a car abandoned at an angle in the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Grant\u2019s patrol unit was already positioned near the front corner of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Serrano crouched behind the engine block of a second unit, radio in hand, eyes fixed on the store entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A round struck the glass front door from inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The glass starred but held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grant shouted something into his shoulder mic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane parked the Humvee behind a row of concrete planters, angled enough to provide cover without blocking Grant\u2019s exit route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three wolves were out before the engine fully settled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGrant,\u201d Thane called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grant looked over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSuspect is inside front aisle. Handgun. He fired at the clerk, then at us when we arrived. I have one employee behind the counter. She is alive. I cannot see whether she is hit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSerrano?\u201d Gabriel asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRear door covered,\u201d Grant said. \u201cNo clear exit yet. We have a customer or second employee somewhere near the back. I heard somebody crying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another gunshot cracked from inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grant flinched behind the patrol unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The round hit the metal edge of the hood and snapped away into the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStill shooting,\u201d he said unnecessarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe\u2019s voice came through the radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStatus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane keyed his mic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cActive threat inside Heritage Liquor. Male with handgun in front aisle or near counter. One clerk down but moving. At least one additional civilian unaccounted for. Grant and Serrano have exterior positions. No clear shot from outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not rush the doorway,\u201d Crowe said. \u201cMore units are coming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A scream cut through the front glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But unmistakably terrified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane moved closer to the front corner, using the brick wall for cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The store\u2019s front windows were plastered with beer advertisements, lottery signs, neon brand logos, and rows of bottles behind the counter. The interior was bright enough that the shapes inside moved behind the glare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A man in a gray hoodie stood near the front aisle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His back was partly turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One hand held a black handgun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other gripped a canvas bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind the counter, a woman in a red work shirt lay low on the floor. One arm was wrapped around her upper body.
