WE KNOW YOU HAVE PAWS. PLEASE GIVE THEM TO A KID WHO NEEDS THEM.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel sat in the chair nearest the window with a cup of hospital coffee and an expression that suggested he had been awake long enough to dislike everything about the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stood near the foot of the bed with his tablet open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have logged the sender information,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou logged the boots?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe boots are a physical item delivered to a police detective through a hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are child-sized.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey clearly are not a bribe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen why are you logging them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause Chief Whitaker instructed us not to accept gifts without processing them through the department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel took a careful sip of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank God. For a second, I thought we might have to make ethical decisions without a spreadsheet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not look up from the tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe spreadsheet is helping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane glanced again at the cardboard box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt says to give them to a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can ask the Chief whether they can be routed through an existing youth-outreach partner,\u201d Mark said. \u201cOr returned with a thank-you note explaining the policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are boots,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are still boots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are kind of good-looking boots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane gave him a flat look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are not trying them on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not say I was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou looked at the size.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was estimating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGabriel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the card again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe sender included a child\u2019s name but no return address. I had no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane had closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not bulletproof.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Gabriel had said. \u201cYou are not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat needs to be the statement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark had already been typing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final version had gone through Chief Whitaker, City Legal, Critical Incident, and Voss before anyone allowed it to leave the department\u2019s official account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not dramatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did not mention hiking boots, powerful paws, supernatural heroism, or the number of rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Detective Thane is recovering following last night\u2019s armed robbery at Heritage Liquor. He is not invulnerable, and the public should not mistake werewolf healing for an absence of injury or risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clerk injured in the robbery is also expected to recover. The incident remains under investigation. You have no retained rounds, no current internal bleeding, and no fractures. Your wounds are closing at a rate that is not medically reasonable for a human patient.\u201d She paused. \u201cYou are not a human patient. That does not mean I am suddenly comfortable calling any of this normal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the clipboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat are his current restrictions?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Hayes looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo work. No driving. No lifting. No chasing armed suspects through convenience stores.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStrong list.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane sat up a little straighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was not in a convenience store.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Hayes stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not correct me on venue type.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane settled back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nurse tried not to smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Hayes continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour blood pressure is stable. Your imaging is clear. The wounds are healing cleanly. You have been monitored long enough that I am comfortable releasing you later this afternoon if your condition remains stable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at the clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLater this afternoon?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is 09:22,\u201d Dr. Hayes said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was shot last night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Hayes looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are not supposed to be eligible for discharge this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane considered that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am sorry?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStop apologizing to doctors for surviving in ways that annoy us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears tipped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is concise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is medically accurate,\u201d Dr. Hayes said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are going to rest.
