You are all here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That alone was enough to make Gabriel slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked up from the folder tucked beneath one arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer wore a dark suit instead of his usual department polo. His tie was straight. His expression was controlled in the particular way it became when he had spent too long thinking about something unpleasant and had arrived at the conclusion that he still had to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind him, Chief Whitaker stood in the doorway with Voss and Rusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe was there too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was not a normal shift handoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked down the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then back at Mercer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer folded his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt eighteen-thirty, we are holding a press conference in the Community Room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All three wolves went still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer looked directly at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou will be speaking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one full second, no one answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked at all three of them and took a slow drink of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have never seen that happen at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pointed at Mercer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou cannot just say that like it is a normal sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am aware,\u201d Mercer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane found his voice first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have a shift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou do,\u201d Mercer said. \u201cIt will begin after the press conference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought the department had already released a statement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd Chief Whitaker spoke yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen why am I speaking?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer glanced toward the closed doors of the Community Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause the city has spent four days trying to understand what it saw through incomplete, frightening video. Because the public knows you were shot. Because people know you healed faster than they thought was possible. There are people turning a violent robbery into a superhero story. We need the facts to be louder than that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears lowered slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not want a press conference about me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not want anyone thinking getting shot was impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not want to become\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA slogan?\u201d Mercer asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hallway quieted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief Whitaker stepped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are not being asked to perform,\u201d she said. \u201cYou are being asked to tell the truth. You will speak only to what you know. You will not speculate. You will not answer questions about evidence that remains under review. You can say \u2018I do not know\u2019 whenever you need to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane glanced at Voss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo I have to answer questions?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Voss said. \u201cYou can decline any question. Mercer or I will step in if it goes somewhere it should not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk lifted his coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd I have been instructed to remain silent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is the smartest decision anyone has made all day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not disagree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked toward the Community Room doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow many people are out there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore than I expected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not an answer,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are local, regional, and national media outlets. There are citizens. Some of the Heritage Liquor staff are here. Rosa\u2019s sister is here. Evan\u2019s mother is here. Officers from every shift are here. Dispatch sent two representatives. Fire and EMS have people in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer studied him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou do not have to give a speech. But the city needs to hear something from you that is not a viral clip of a gunman firing at you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked down at his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old ache had mostly faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His chest no longer pulled when he breathed deeply. His thigh no longer made him favor one side. The wounds had closed. His body had repaired itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that did not mean the memory had become small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He still remembered the glass breaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The feeling of the rounds hitting him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rosa crawling behind the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gun rising toward her again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do you want me to say?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer answered quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stepped closer to Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are good at that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not good at microphones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are good at telling people what matters,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd at correcting inaccurate assumptions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane glanced toward the Community Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Mark said. \u201cBut it is adjacent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time since Mercer had spoken, Thane\u2019s mouth twitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere. He is emotionally prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRusk,\u201d Voss said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am being supportive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Gabriel said. \u201cYou are being Rusk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief Whitaker checked the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwenty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou do not need to be perfect. You need to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Community Room had been used for retirement receptions, citizen-academy nights, training sessions, school presentations, and once, according to Gabriel, a disastrous chili cook-off that had required three fire extinguishers and a plumbing contractor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tonight, it looked like a different room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rows of folding chairs filled the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Television cameras stood along the back wall beneath the department seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reporters clustered near the aisle with notebooks, microphones, and phones already recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The side walls held city staff, officers, dispatchers, firefighters, paramedics, and citizens who had run out of room in the chairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The front row was not media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rosa Martinez sat there with her sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her upper arm was wrapped beneath a loose cardigan. She looked tired. Pale, maybe. The suspect fired multiple rounds inside the business, injured an employee, and continued to present an immediate threat to the people inside the store and responding officers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room was quiet enough that Thane could hear the soft mechanical hum of the camera lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOfficer Grant and Officer Serrano arrived first and established exterior positions. Detective Thane, Detective Gabriel, and Detective Mark arrived shortly afterward. Officers identified an injured clerk behind the counter, an additional employee trapped inside the store, and an armed suspect who remained active.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe suspect fired at Detective Thane. Detective Thane was struck seven times. He was injured. We have received cards, flowers, food, messages, drawings, and gifts. We have also seen online speculation that is inaccurate, unsafe, or disrespectful to the people who were harmed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His eyes moved across the rows of cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are asking everyone not to share graphic footage from the scene.
