Gabriel climbed out with a coffee in one hand and the skeptical expression of someone who no longer trusted Mondays on principle. Mark stepped down from the back seat with his tablet tucked under one arm and his shirt already neat despite the ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The air was warm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The station looked ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No media trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No flowers piled near reception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No unusual calls rolling across the radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one waiting outside the employee entrance with a clipboard, a crisis, a casserole, or an animal in a box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked toward the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not like it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane shut the driver\u2019s door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe calm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark glanced toward the station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe absence of visible crisis is not evidence of hidden crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pointed at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is exactly what hidden crisis wants us to think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane started toward the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are going to handoff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is where they get you,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMonday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMonday is not sentient.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane badged them through the employee entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside, the hallway smelled like coffee, paper, floor cleaner, and the faint metallic warmth of a building that had been running its air conditioning hard all day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The radio room hummed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone laughed near records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A patrol officer they did not know well passed them carrying a stack of citation books and gave a quick nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They reached the Investigations hallway and turned toward the Night Shift office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then all three stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss was inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk was inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer was inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deputy Chief Mercer stood near Thane\u2019s desk with both hands on his hips, wearing the expression of a man who had opened a door expecting a closet and found a live orchestra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss sat at the table with a folder closed in front of her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk leaned against the file cabinet with coffee in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of them spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at Mercer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at the hallway behind them, as if briefly calculating the odds of leaving before anyone acknowledged their arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer pointed at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA hundred grand?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s mouth opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark became very still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought they could use the cash.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel made a small sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not quite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More like the sound of a man realizing this conversation had begun halfway down a hill and was still gaining speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer stared at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou thought they could use the cash.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo you handed the administrator of Bridge House a folded envelope at the end of a full volunteer day and walked out before she could open it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss closed her eyes briefly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked at the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel whispered, \u201cStrong exit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer turned slightly, then turned back, as if his first response had physically failed to locate the correct place to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTalia Warren called my office this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs something wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Mercer said. \u201cNothing is wrong. That is the problem. Nothing is wrong. She called to tell me that three of my detectives spent sixteen hours at Bridge House on Saturday moving boxes, serving meals, organizing storage, cleaning, taking photos, making staff laugh, and apparently causing a pantry volunteer named Dennis to develop strong opinions about bean labels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears tipped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe labels were necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am sure they were,\u201d Mercer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel raised one hand slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor the record, Mary invited me back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe said you had poor knife discipline but strong morale value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel lowered his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is fair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer looked at Thane again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe was crying, Thane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room quieted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe tried not to. Administrator voice. Professional voice. All of that. But I could hear it. She said the money will keep their food purchasing stable through the hottest part of the summer, cover a cooler replacement, help with emergency overflow supplies, and give them breathing room on staffing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not know what to do with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So he nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA hundred thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey needed it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI understand that part.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer spread both hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I do not understand is how that number came out of your back pocket like a grocery receipt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss\u2019s mouth moved slightly, but she did not interrupt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer\u2019s eyes moved across all three wolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow much money do you three actually have?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears lowered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not think that is relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt became relevant when one of my detectives started quietly dropping six-figure checks into social-service agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was one check.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer pointed at him again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not the defense you think it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk murmured, \u201cIt was a very Thane defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss said, \u201cRusk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat? It excludes the cabin, vehicles, certain trust structures, and funds already committed to charitable programs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer sat down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just straight down into the nearest chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk finally lowered his coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSixty-seven million.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd change,\u201d Gabriel said faintly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot helping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer rubbed one hand over his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI need a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked uncomfortable enough that Rusk\u2019s expression softened by a fraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss folded her hands on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of them spoke for several seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Rusk said, very quietly, \u201cYou have sixty-seven million dollars and you still come here for night shift?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was the same question Darnell had asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not look at Gabriel or Mark first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause we like to help people,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we need to feel useful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is accurate,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer looked at all three of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou could do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd this is what you choose?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer leaned back slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss watched him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked down at his coffee like it had become less interesting than the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane continued, quieter now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMoney helps. Saturday proved that. The fund proved that. The fleet proved that. But money does not sit with someone after bad news. Money does not find a lost wedding ring.
