Also volume. Also possible municipal regret.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A patrol car rolled slowly through the lot. Voices came from the main training classroom ahead. More voices than before. Human voices. Same steady eyes. Dark hair tied back. Green jacket replaced by a clean dark blouse and slacks, practical Keen hiking boots under the table. Yellow tags had been removed, but Thane recognized the same model from Conference Room C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled. \u201cAssigned furniture. We\u2019re moving up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They crossed the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every eye followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane kept his hands open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Claws visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His footpaws made almost no sound against the floor. That unsettled some of the humans. It always did. People expected something his size to announce itself. When he did not, they became aware that he had chosen not to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark sat first, carefully. The chair held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel sat next. His tail moved through the modified gap in the chair back without issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane sat last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chair made a sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a crack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just an honest complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire room heard it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel whispered, \u201cStrong start.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale looked at the class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, they\u2019re werewolves. No, this is not a field trip. Eyes forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several heads snapped front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale picked up a marker and wrote on the board:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PRE-ACADEMY ORIENTATION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under it, he wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>EVERYONE STARTS AT ZERO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he capped the marker and faced the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWelcome to pre-academy orientation. Some of you are sponsored. Some are self-sponsored. Some are currently employed in public safety. Some are coming from military, corrections, security, dispatch, EMS, college, or jobs your parents keep telling you were more stable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few nervous laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale did not smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not the academy. This is the room before the room. You are here because someone decided you might be worth the paperwork. Do not confuse that with being ready.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned slightly toward Mark. \u201cThat\u2019s going on his holiday cards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark whispered, \u201cI would buy one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale\u2019s eyes flicked toward the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They stopped whispering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome of you were the toughest person in your last job,\u201d Hale said. \u201cSome of you were the smartest. Some of you were team leaders, squad leaders, shift leads, captains of something, presidents of something, or the person everyone called when something broke.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His gaze moved, not subtly, across Brent, Cass, Mark, Gabriel, and Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNone of that graduates you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brent\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane saw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So did Hale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome of you are physically strong. Some are quick. Some are calm under pressure. Some can talk to anyone. Some write well. Not a physical threat. Gabriel handling.
