Voss would lead. Rusk would sit second. Crowe had decided Night Shift would observe from outside and remain close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because Creed had earned special treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the scenes had earned caution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three homes connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two completed burglaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One interrupted attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A suspect with security credentials, a list of future targets, a vehicle tied to the scenes, stolen property located at the attempted burglary, and physical damage no one in the building liked saying out loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creed paused just inside the room and looked back at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are staying close.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creed smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPrudent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe looked at Darnell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeat him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell guided Creed to the chair at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patel stood near the door while Darnell secured Creed\u2019s cuffs to the table ring with a short chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark watched the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standard cuffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standard interview restraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Properly double-locked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Properly seated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sufficient for humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had said that earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not say it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creed sat comfortably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the second thing Thane did not like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most suspects resisted the table restraint if only by shifting their shoulders or testing the chain with some small resentful movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creed did not test it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply rested his cuffed hands against the table as though the restraint were decorative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss stepped in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darnell and Patel exited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe remained in the hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interview room door closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recording system began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just the fixed room system, Voss, Rusk, a suspect, and a case that had gone from strange to dangerous in less than one night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss sat across from Creed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSilas Creed, I am Detective Voss. This is Detective Rusk. You are in custody. Before we ask questions, I am going to advise you of your rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creed leaned back slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss read the advisement cleanly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No shortcuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creed listened with the patient expression of a man hearing a familiar disclaimer before signing a contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she finished, she asked, \u201cDo you understand each of those rights as I have explained them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creed\u2019s eyes moved briefly toward the observation window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He could not see through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss placed the rights form on the Mercer wants someone to explain the phrase \u2018transformation risk profile\u2019 in a way that will not make him retire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was afraid of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked down the hall toward the garage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere is Creed?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStill sedated. Stable. Guarded. Suspect attempted to flee toward occupied police facility hallway. I positioned myself between suspect and other persons. Suspect charged me. I used physical control techniques with assistance from Detectives Gabriel and Mark to stop forward movement, place suspect prone, and prevent further escape. Suspect continued resisting. Due to demonstrated strength and failure of standard restraints, I applied joint pressure\/pain compliance to compel suspect to cease resistance and return to human form.
