Redbud. Prairie Star. Night Owl. Sooner Stop. She held a dish towel in one hand and looked deeply offended by the amount of attention her kitchen had attracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI burned toast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ortiz leaned slightly to see past her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smoke was heavier now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMa\u2019am, step outside for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is just toast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOutside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The way Ortiz said it made the argument end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mrs. Prentiss came out onto the porch, coughing once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grant gently guided her down the steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firefighters entered, found the toaster smoking on the counter, unplugged it, and carried it outside like a defeated enemy.
