No ceremony. No theatrical command presence. Cross Timber cannot create a private rehabilitation track inside public safety because a wealthy donor, a police unit, or a popular public figure asks for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli definitely noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maren continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf anything proceeds, it must be defensible on public-safety grounds, legally compliant, departmentally controlled, nonpreferential in any improper sense, and completely insulated from donations, publicity, or personal influence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane said, \u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It came out steady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief Calder leaned back slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI will also be plain. If your fund pays for equipment, training resources, station improvements, or anything connected to fire department support while Silas is under consideration, that creates an appearance problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s head lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat if it is not connected to him?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maren looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf it is contemporaneous, and you are advocating for him, the public may not perceive the distinction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not care what the public perceives if the structure is clean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli said, \u201cThane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli\u2019s voice was calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word hit like a hand on his chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane sat back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For about three seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calder said, \u201cI will not have my department look bought. Not for him. Not for you. Training, gear, insurance, accommodations, facility adaptation, supervision time, legal review, outside certification, whatever it is. I do not care how much it costs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli said, \u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI will pledge millions if I need to. Quietly. Cleanly. Through whatever foundation. City-wide. Department-wide. No strings. New training facility. Rescue equipment. Burn tower. Whatever makes it possible for them to evaluate him without saying resources are the reason.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale\u2019s arms unfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is exactly how you make resources the reason.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane turned toward her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe deserves a leg up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room went silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words hung there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane heard himself and still could not stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe has spent his whole life being treated like the worst possible version of what he is. People saw strength and called it danger. Then he made that true. Fine. He did that. He owns it. But now he is trying. He is working. He is following every rule. He stops when told no. He asks before using strength. He is learning how to be wolf without making people afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His voice grew heavier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou all saw him at the park. Or heard about it. He lifted under command. He was thanked by name. Do you know what that did to him? Do you understand what one person saying \u2018Thanks, Silas\u2019 did?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calder\u2019s face softened, but he said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane leaned forward, both paws flat on the polished table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want him to have a place where people are glad he showed up. I want him to be wolf and useful and appreciated. I want him to feel true happiness without having to steal it from someone else\u2019s house. If it costs money, take mine. If it costs political risk, put it on me. If people get angry, let them be angry at me. I believe you mean help. But if I think for one second that money, pressure, guilt, or your public standing is driving this, I will recommend against the entire pathway. Not to punish him. I admire Night Shift. My granddaughter thinks the Kaden Face is the height of civilization. If I did not respect what you three have done, I would not be sitting here. That is the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He let that land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour reputation got me to look. It cannot make me say yes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calder continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf Silas ever stands in one of my stations, it will be because he can follow orders, protect people, keep his head, respect command, and make the team safer. Not because you would empty a bank account for him. If I smell that, I walk away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room was quiet again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, Thane let it be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel did not joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not rescue him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was worse than being corrected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At his paws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the polished wood that reflected a distorted shape back at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had wanted to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had wanted to tear the wall down before Silas saw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had wanted to be strong enough that the answer could not be no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ugly thing inside the good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strength wanting to solve pain by force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money was just another kind of force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane closed his eyes once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then opened them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked first at Maren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMs. Pitts, I apologize. I should not have suggested money as a way to move this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Hale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSupervisor, I apologize. You are right. That would put him at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Calder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChief, I apologize. Your department cannot look bought, and Silas cannot look bought into it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Eli and Nora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI should have maintained proper composure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked down at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s shoulders eased by a fraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not withdrawing the request. I am not pretending I feel less strongly. I do want him to have a chance. I do want every lawful effort made to see whether there is a path.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His voice settled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut I understand that if I push with money or influence, I may kill the only honest chance he has.
