Her face held the calm patience of a detective who had already decided not to negotiate with large mammals before coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s modified,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seat looked back spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss glanced inside. \u201cIt has extended tracks, reinforced brackets, and the console was shifted two inches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo inches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was what maintenance could do without swearing in writing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned against the next SUV over, where Rusk stood with keys in one hand and amusement hidden badly behind tired eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel said, \u201cIt looks cozy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled. \u201cFor a suitcase.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stood near Lieutenant Crowe\u2019s supervisor vehicle, notebook in hand, ears angled in a way that said he was handling the situation calmly and also absolutely not handling it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pack was being separated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not permanently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not even out of radio reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That did not help as much as it should have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three of them had been separated before, obviously. They did not walk around tied together like nervous sled dogs. But this was different. Training different. Official different. A line drawn by people outside the pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane with Voss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel with Rusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark with Crowe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three pieces of one instinct forced into separate seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale stood near the building entrance with coffee, because apparently the department had discovered he could appear whenever emotional discomfort was educational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you can\u2019t function without standing shoulder-to-shoulder,\u201d Hale said, \u201cyou can\u2019t function.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel sighed. \u201cHe says things like that and expects us not to resent the accuracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark adjusted his grip on the notebook. \u201cI am functioning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe, short and sharp-eyed beside him, looked up from her tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re holding that notebook like it\u2019s a flotation device.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then loosened his grip by one percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe nodded. \u201cBrave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk opened the passenger door of his SUV for Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo I get to touch the siren?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Rusk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat if morale requires it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEspecially no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel glanced toward Thane. \u201cCruel department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane was still staring at Voss\u2019s passenger seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss tapped the roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s small.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a vehicle, not a cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has opinions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo do you. In.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane folded himself into the seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Folded was the right word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His knees disliked the dashboard. His tail found the modified clearance and accepted it grudgingly. His shoulders touched the door and almost the console at the same time. The seatbelt fit because someone had clearly argued with it beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss watched him settle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou good?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan you survive it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She shut the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel climbed into Rusk\u2019s SUV with more grace and immediately said something that made Rusk point at him through the windshield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark got into Crowe\u2019s supervisor vehicle, where two radios, a mounted laptop, a tablet, and a dashboard camera made the inside look like a rolling command desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s eyes lit despite the pack separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRide-along rule one,\u201d she said through the open door. \u201cDo not insult the car.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark blinked. \u201cI had not spoken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour face said the mobile terminal is mounted at an inefficient angle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at Crowe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was concern.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe car has heard enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale looked between the three vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLimited observation,\u201d he said. \u201cPassenger seat means passenger seat. You do not act unless directed. You do not make contact unless directed. You do not turn a ride-along into a documentary about feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned out Rusk\u2019s window. \u201cWhat if feelings arise naturally?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSuppress them professionally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark raised one claw slightly. \u201cQuestion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale looked pained. \u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we observe something relevant in separate vehicles, do we report to the assigned officer or over shared channel?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe answered before Hale could. \u201cAssigned officer first unless immediate safety issue. You\u2019re observers, not traffic on my radio.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded. \u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe looked at him. \u201cGood. Also, do not audit my CAD workflow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark opened his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe pointed at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He closed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale looked almost proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll right. Go learn why clean training lines get smeared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss got into the driver\u2019s seat and started the SUV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The radio came alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked through the windshield as the three vehicles pulled out of the lot in different directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel and Rusk turned right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe and Mark turned left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss went straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The separation tugged in Thane\u2019s chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A wrongness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The absence of familiar bodies in familiar places. Gabriel\u2019s quiet humor not beside him. Mark\u2019s breathing not behind him. The pack scattered into radio traffic and headlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss noticed without looking at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re allowed to dislike it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared forward. \u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBad lie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He growled softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlso allowed,\u201d she said. \u201cQuietly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SUV moved through Cross Timber as evening settled over the city. Streetlights flickered on. Store signs glowed. Traffic thinned but did not disappear. A line of cars curled around a coffee stand. A dog behind a fence barked once, caught Thane\u2019s scent through the passing window, and reconsidered its plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss drove like she did everything else: controlled, unsentimental, aware of exits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTonight is observation,\u201d she said. \u201cNot patrol. Not enforcement. We listen, we respond if assigned, you stay in the passenger seat unless I say otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI heard Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood. Hear me too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss kept her eyes on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou do not need to prove you learned Ross\u2019s lessons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat sounds like a trap.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a warning. People fail training by trying to demonstrate training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked out the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Annoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A different radio voice came over the channel. Crowe, calm and clipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSupervisor two clear from annex. Monitoring east side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s voice was not on the radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Rusk checked in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo-twelve clear, north sector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel did not add anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss keyed her mic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo-oh-eight clear, central.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The night moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first twenty minutes, nothing dramatic happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was also part of the lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A traffic stop that cleared with a warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A suspicious vehicle that turned out to be teenagers eating tacos in a church parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A noise complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A reckless driver call that vanished before units arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A welfare check pending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Radio voices rose, crossed, cleared, updated, disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane listened from the passenger seat and hated how passive it felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss glanced at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPassenger seat is not nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFeels like nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen you\u2019re doing it wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She turned onto a commercial street lined with strip centers, gas stations, pharmacies, and fast food places glowing under fluorescent signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObservation means you watch what the driver can\u2019t. Hands. Cars. Doors. People turning away when they see us. People looking too long. People who don\u2019t look at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears angled forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPassenger seat is discipline,\u201d Voss said. \u201cYou are not less responsible because you\u2019re not driving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he started watching differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not just the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A man pacing outside a laundromat, phone pressed to his ear, angry but stationary. A woman at a bus stop with two kids and three bags, tired but alert. A truck parked crooked behind a closed vape shop. A bicycle half-hidden beside a dumpster. A convenience store clerk taping a sign to a window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city was not quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It only hid its noise in layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The call came at 8:17 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnits copy disturbance, QuickMart at Danforth and Pine. Caller reports male subject inside yelling at customers, possibly intoxicated, possibly armed with knife. Subject described white male, forties, gray hoodie, jeans, bleeding from hand. Caller says subject is near front doors. Multiple customers inside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss\u2019s posture changed before the dispatcher finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s did too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word knife arrived with a specific weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then bleeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then front doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss keyed the mic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo-oh-eight en route.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk answered a beat later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo-twelve en route from north.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSupervisor two monitoring. Advise on staging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane heard nothing from Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he could imagine him in Crowe\u2019s passenger seat, eyes scanning CAD, hands wanting to type, brain building the scene faster than the radio could feed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss glanced at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He recognized the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not what do you think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not what do you want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What do you know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMale subject. Yelling. Possibly intoxicated. Possibly armed. Bleeding. Near front doors. Customers inside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do you assume?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat he\u2019s dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss nodded. \u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane forced himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat the knife report may be wrong. That intoxicated may be wrong. That bleeding could be injury, not threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SUV accelerated, but not recklessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still maddening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The QuickMart sat on the corner of Danforth and Pine, a bright rectangle of glass, gas pumps, and cheap light against the dark. Two cars were parked at angles near the entrance. One driver stood halfway out of her car with her phone up, filming. Another person hovered near the ice machine. Inside, several customers clustered too close to the front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss parked at an angle that gave her view of the doors without blocking the whole lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPassenger seat,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s claws flexed once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPassenger seat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She got out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every part of him hated it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss moved toward the front, one hand low near her radio, posture open but ready. Rusk\u2019s SUV pulled in from the opposite side seconds later.
