Mark had written FIELD OBSERVATION SUMMARY<\/strong> at the top of a blank page and had been staring at the empty space below it like it had taken hostages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kitchen was quiet except for the scratch of Gabriel\u2019s pen, the soft hum of the refrigerator, and Thane\u2019s occasional growl at paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still sincere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel sat at the kitchen island with one elbow propped on the counter, a legal pad in front of him, and the expression of someone trying to pretend he was not taking the assignment seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark sat at the dining table because he needed \u201csurface area,\u201d which was Mark language for emotional distance from other people\u2019s bad formatting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane had chosen the end of the island and a single sheet of paper because Hale had said one page and Thane intended to comply aggressively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result had taken seven minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pushed the paper away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel looked up. \u201cThat tone says crime scene.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark immediately turned. \u201cHow many sentences?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat is not a number.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel reached for the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane put one claw on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark stood and walked over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane sighed, lifted his claw, and let them read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel leaned in first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark stood behind him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At QuickMart, male subject smelled panicked, not aggressive. Subject was confused and bleeding. Possible knife was glass. He needed sugar. Voss told me to guide him left. I guided him left with two fingers. No levitation. Subject was not enemy. EMS handled.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel slowly placed one hand over his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s ears lowered with the gravity of a doctor reading a fatal chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane looked between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel inhaled carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe haunts it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark picked up the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou cannot write \u2018subject was not enemy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause reports should avoid dramatic moral classification.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane frowned. \u201cIt\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel nodded. \u201cYes, but it sounds like you\u2019re writing from a battlefield or a fantasy novel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel looked away. \u201cPoor example.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark tapped the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe you. Hale will not accept it like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane leaned back. \u201cThen Hale can smell him next time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel smiled. \u201cI support that as policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. You need observable indicators. Sweating. Shaking. Rapid breathing. Repeated confused statements. Searching behavior. Inconsistent focus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane looked at Mark\u2019s blank page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou haven\u2019t written yours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark looked betrayed. \u201cI am planning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It contained an outline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane stared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel whispered, \u201cHe built a nest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark pulled the page back. \u201cIt is a draft framework.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has a legend,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe legend is necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor one page?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel\u2019s handwriting was clean, annoyingly elegant, and far more relaxed than his personality deserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The subject\u2019s initial agitation appeared to be driven less by hostility than confusion and escalating shame. His attention shifted once he understood his keys and vehicle had been located. Vocal tone softened after reassurance that he was not immediately being punished. Visible compliance increased when commands became shorter and less crowded by competing voices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane stared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark nodded slowly. \u201cIt is well written.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark continued. \u201cIt is also not a report.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark sat between them with the weary authority of someone whose own report was definitely going to be six pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe assignment is due today,\u201d he said. \u201cHale requested one page describing what we knew, what we assumed, what changed, and where we were useful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel looked at Thane. \u201cThat means no soul interviews.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane looked at Gabriel. \u201cNo enemies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They both looked at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark held his notebook closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo legends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s ears flattened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCruel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annex classroom smelled like coffee, dry marker, and the fear of written assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several applicants were already there when the trio arrived. Cass sat near the side wall, one page in front of her, pen resting neatly beside it. Brent sat two seats away, brow furrowed, staring at his own paper as if it had insulted his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale stood at the front table with a red pen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A red pen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel saw it and stopped walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale lifted it. \u201cEmotionally, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ross leaned against the wall near the whiteboard with arms crossed, smiling like someone who had come to watch other people discover that writing could bruise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss sat at the side table with a cup of coffee and a stack of blank forms. Rusk was there too, which meant the day had more witnesses than mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel leaned toward Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a tribunal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark whispered, \u201cIt is a writing workshop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale pointed to seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His expression suggested he had survived them through stubbornness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome of you wrote reports. Some of you wrote apologies for not being on scene. Some of you wrote action movies with paragraph breaks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brent looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale\u2019s eyes moved to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, Talley, I mean you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brent muttered, \u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale lifted a page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would have secured the subject.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked at Brent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were not there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brent\u2019s face reddened. \u201cIt was hypothetical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo is my patience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ross coughed into one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel smiled at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale set Brent\u2019s page down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cReports are not where you prove you would have been brave. They are where you prove you understood what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That quieted the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss stood then, taking over without needing to announce it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cObservation is what you directly saw, heard, smelled, felt, measured, or were told by an identified source. Inference is what those observations suggest. Assumption is what you filled in without enough support. Action is what you did or did not do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her gaze moved to the trio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor some of you, observation includes information most people cannot perceive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane\u2019s ears angled slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel leaned back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s pen moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat does not make it useless. It does make it easy to write badly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale picked up Thane\u2019s page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane\u2019s stomach dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He hated that his stomach did anything at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale read aloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room went very quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel looked at the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane stared at Hale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTry again before a defense attorney frames this and hangs it in court.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few applicants laughed carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane folded his arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss nodded. \u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProbably?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou detected panic. That matters. But a report has to show someone else why that conclusion was reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can smell it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know,\u201d Voss said. \u201cThey cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane looked at the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss tapped OBSERVATION<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWrite what made you think it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cass spoke from the side, quiet but clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what EMS taught us. Write what made you think it, not what you thought first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss pointed at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cass looked mildly uncomfortable at being used correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale read more from Thane\u2019s page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPossible knife was glass. He needed sugar. No levitation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ross looked delighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brent\u2019s head lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWait. He wrote no levitation?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel\u2019s mouth twitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark whispered, \u201cUnfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale looked at Thane. \u201cWhy is that in here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane stared back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ross lost a small laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss covered her smile with coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale set the paper down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe fact that you did not levitate a subject is not normally reportable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel raised one claw. \u201cNormally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale pointed the red pen at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo not help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brent looked toward Thane, and for one second the memory of hovering six inches above a mat moved across his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he quietly laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That made it survivable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss picked up where Hale left off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInstead of \u2018smelled panicked,\u2019 you could write: subject was sweating heavily, breathing rapidly, scanning the store and parking lot, repeatedly asking for his truck despite vehicle later being located nearby, and appeared confused about the object in his hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against his will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can include scent if relevant. For example: \u2018I detected a strong odor of sweat and blood from the subject and did not detect alcohol odor from my position.\u2019 That may matter if intoxication was part of the call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s pen moved quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel\u2019s eyes sharpened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane said, \u201cSo I leave out what I knew?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Voss said. \u201cYou write how you knew it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room settled around that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane looked down at his page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words there suddenly seemed smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just unfinished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss said, \u201cYour senses can point you toward the truth. Your report has to show the road.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark wrote that down with visible reverence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel whispered, \u201cHe\u2019s going to embroider that on a pillow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark whispered back, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane glanced at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark added, \u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale picked up Gabriel\u2019s report next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel sat very still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale read silently first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is not a novel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel blinked. \u201cIt has no metaphors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has emotional choreography.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel looked wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss held out her hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale passed her the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She read a line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane murmured, \u201cSoul interview.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel looked at him. \u201cNot enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale pointed the red pen at both of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cContinue and I assign joint reports.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They shut up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss tapped Gabriel\u2019s page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInstead of escalating shame, write the behaviors. Subject lowered his voice after being told his keys were on the counter. Subject stopped moving toward the pump lane when given clear direction. Subject released the glass after repeated commands and reassurance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel nodded slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo I can use the read in the moment, but the report needs the behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked at the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then back up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat if the behavior only makes sense because of the read?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen write both carefully,\u201d Voss said. \u201cObservation first. Inference second. No mind reading.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel smiled faintly. \u201cHis soul was loud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen it can file its own supplement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rusk laughed once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale looked betrayed that Voss had gotten the better line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s report came last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale picked it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then kept picking it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Page after page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s ears went back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale held up the stack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is not one page.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark straightened. \u201cIt is one page if printed on ledger paper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ross made a choking sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel whispered, \u201cAdministrative death wish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale stared at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will end you administratively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale flipped through the pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have a timeline, call-flow analysis, map annotation, public-perception note, officer safety note, medical context note, and a section titled \u2018Decision Pivot Points.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark tried not to look proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss reached for the stack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale handed it over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She scanned it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is good work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s ears lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale said, \u201cDon\u2019t reward him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss ignored him. \u201cIt is not the assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark\u2019s ears lowered again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voss looked at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cComplete is not always useful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark frowned slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe that. But a report can be accurate and still fail if the person who needs it cannot quickly understand what matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hale nodded. \u201cIf your report needs its own table of contents, the emergency is you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark looked personally injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
