A single reinforced chair sat off to one side with a printed sign taped to the back:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WITNESS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three rows of chairs faced forward as a pretend gallery. A side table held folders, water bottles, blank legal pads, and Hale\u2019s red pen, which had apparently survived the report-writing session and returned hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nearly walked into him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked over Gabriel\u2019s shoulder and saw the chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chair looked normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale stood near the front with coffee in one hand and the red pen in the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel remained still. \u201cThis is theater.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is testimony orientation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has staging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s what theater says when it wants funding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale pointed with the pen. \u201cSit down before I cast you as example one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel entered, but with the dignity of someone wronged by interior design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stepped in behind him, eyes already cataloging the room. The table placement. The witness chair. The sightlines. The stack of case materials. The emergency exit. Brent came in carrying his revised QuickMart report, his expression set in the careful neutrality of a man who had learned that confidence could become evidence against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya Serrano sat behind Cass. Jordan Vale sat two seats away from Brent and looked deeply worried by the witness chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk leaned against the wall near the back, coffee in hand, eyes heavy but alert. Ross sat beside him with crossed arms and a smile that meant she was not teaching today but planned to enjoy the suffering anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss stood near the front table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And at the center of the room, organizing her notes with surgical precision, stood Assistant City Attorney Priya Shah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel saw her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh good,\u201d he murmured. \u201cA professional question assassin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI heard that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI meant it respectfully.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat makes it worse somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale clapped once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room quieted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday, we find out if your reports survive being read by someone who wants them to die.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel raised one claw slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale pointed at him. \u201cDo not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was just going to say that\u2019s encouraging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was not meant to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale stepped aside, giving Shah the front of the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She wore a dark blue suit, her hair pulled back, legal pad open, three pens aligned beside it. She looked too calm for someone about to make everyone miserable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReport writing is only half the process,\u201d Shah said. \u201cIf you write something, someone may ask you to defend it. If you observed something, someone may ask how. If you made a conclusion, someone may ask whether you had the right to make it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her eyes moved across the class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTestimony is not conversation. It is not persuasion. It is not storytelling. It is answering questions accurately, clearly, and only as far as your knowledge allows.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark wrote that down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cListen to the whole question. You first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cass stood without drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was her way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No hesitation. No performance. No visible panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She walked to the witness chair, sat, adjusted her posture, and folded her hands loosely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chair did not complain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale looked disappointed, though it was hard to say about what.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah stood behind the front table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ll begin with the oath. Detective Rusk and Detective Voss controlled the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah nodded slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, survivable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She looked at his report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou wrote that the subject responded better to short instructions than multiple overlapping commands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAre you trained as a psychologist?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAre you qualified to diagnose his mental state?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo when you say he responded better, are you speculating about his internal emotional state?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned back slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He smiled out of instinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale\u2019s voice came from the side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe witness stand is not a stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel glanced at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has seating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale lifted the red pen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not make me prove my point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked back at Shah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cI am not diagnosing his emotional state. I am describing observed behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat observed behavior?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis voice lowered after Detective Voss told him his keys were on the counter. He made eye contact when given short direct commands. He stopped moving toward the pump lane after being told where to step. He released the glass after repeated clear instructions and reassurance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah watched him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd your role?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI used short verbal prompts to draw his attention and support Detective Voss and Detective Rusk\u2019s commands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you believe he trusted you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s mouth opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah\u2019s eyebrows lifted slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI observed that he looked toward me when I spoke and followed some instructions. I don\u2019t know whether he trusted me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel saw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tried not to look pleased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Failed slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah closed the folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBetter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel let out a breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTerrible compliment. People don\u2019t need poetry when they\u2019re bleeding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel placed a hand over his heart. \u201cSome people bleed poetically.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cass looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStill pending.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she walked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brent came by a moment later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stopped beside Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat question about lifting someone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brent glanced toward the witness chair, now just a chair again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShah used me without using me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brent nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word seemed to cost him less now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked at Gabriel, then Mark, then Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSixteen weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled faintly. \u201cPlenty of time for you to become emotionally enlightened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brent snorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDon\u2019t push it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cIncremental progress is acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brent pointed at him. \u201cThat actually sounds worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt often does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brent walked away shaking his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel watched him go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s becoming less terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane grunted. \u201cDon\u2019t scare it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked pleased that Thane had used his line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside, the afternoon was bright and windless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Xterra waited in the lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three of them stood beside the vehicle for a moment before getting in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of them spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The witness chair stayed in Thane\u2019s head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because of the chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sitting still while someone else shaped the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waiting for the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answering only what fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not chasing every wrong turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not growling at every implication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not shoving the whole truth forward because the pieces felt too small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The witness stand was another passenger seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was annoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was also true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked back toward the annex, where Hale stood just inside the glass doors talking to Shah. Ross passed behind them carrying the roll of blue tape like a threat. Voss was there too, arms folded, watching the class scatter into the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baseline was over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the part where the question was whether they were possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had become possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they had to become worthy of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane got into the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel settled beside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark climbed into the back and immediately opened the CLEET schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel turned. \u201cAlready?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not look up. \u201cSixteen weeks is a complex system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane started the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As they pulled out, the annex shrank behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The truth still felt too large for one answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But maybe that was the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enough, if it was the right enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane drove toward home with both hands on the wheel, claws light against the leather, and the first real door waiting ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The classroom had become a courtroom.
