A fast-food dumpster now raccoon-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cabin waited beyond the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Silas was inside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In his room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sleeping, maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Safe, hopefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pack, certainly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane parked the Humvee and shut off the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For a moment, the three of them sat still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Gabriel said quietly, \u201cHe heard you fight for him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark said, \u201cAnd came home after.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n That was the part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not that Silas had cried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not that he had hugged Thane hard enough to bruise anyone who bruised normally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not even that he finally knew the words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He had heard them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He had worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He had reported cleanly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He had come home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane opened the door and stepped out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Inside, the cabin was quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The great room held the soft after-scent of Silas: work dust, soap, wolf fur, sleep, home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His keys hung on the hook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Down the hall, Silas\u2019s bedroom door was partly open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A low, steady breathing came from inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane stopped outside the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel and Mark stopped beside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Silas was asleep on the bed in full wolf form, one arm thrown over a pillow, covers tangled around his waist, phone on the nightstand, charger plugged in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not borrowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not stolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane did not wake him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He only stood there for a moment and let himself see the thing he had once begged a room full of cautious people to imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A place where Silas was glad to show up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A place where he was wolf and useful and appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A place where happiness had not been stolen from anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel leaned lightly against Thane\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark stood close on the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Silas slept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pack breathed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane backed away quietly and let Silas rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There would be work later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rules later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mistakes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Laughter later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe even another felony voice demand later, because Thane was still Thane and mercy had limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But for now, Monday night was over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The den was full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And their pack was home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Monday morning began with Silas standing in the kitchen of the cabin, fully shifted, holding a coffee mug in both paws like it might vanish if he stopped respecting it.
