A youth basketball league had finished late, a parent had accused another parent of stealing a team equipment bag, and the accusation had grown legs before anyone checked beneath the bleachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bag was found behind the scorer\u2019s table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody had stolen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody had meant to lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everybody had been tired, embarrassed, and too hot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grant handled the parents. Mark documented the found property. Gabriel talked two eighth-graders out of turning the misunderstanding into a permanent family feud. There would only be cages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word hit the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paige held the microphone very still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have seen him chained to a wall in a concrete room because no one knew how else to hold him. I have also seen him stand in a warehouse and ask permission before lifting something heavy because he wants his strength to help instead of hurt. I have seen a child ask him for a funny wolf face and trust him to be gentle. I have seen his supervisor thank him by name and watch that nearly undo him because he never believed anyone could be glad he showed up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cameras did not move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither did the reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s voice grew quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe spent his life being treated like the worst possible version of what he is. But he is also trying to become something else, and we are not going to punish him for succeeding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s mouth trembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at Thane like he had heard the attorney room again, but steadier now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paige swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are aware this may be unpopular.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are aware people may say you are naive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are aware this could hurt your public image.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane almost laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because it was funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the answer was so small beside the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KCTX reporter asked, \u201cThen why be public about it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked straight into the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause hiding him would tell him we are ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The parking lot went silent again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are not ashamed of loving him. We are not ashamed of holding him accountable. We are not ashamed of saying he is pack. We are not ashamed of standing beside someone who is doing the hard work after doing real harm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paige lowered the microphone by a fraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane continued anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is not a symbol for your segment. He is not proof that crime does not matter. He is not proof that consequences do not matter. He is a person. A wolf. A man who did wrong, admitted it, and is fighting every day to live differently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The streamer had stopped talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KCTX reporter looked vaguely frustrated, as if every door he had planned to kick had opened before he got to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paige tried one more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo what would you say to people watching who are angry?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would say you are allowed to be angry. Ask hard questions. Demand clean boundaries. Demand that the court order be enforced. Demand that officers not use money or reputation to bend the system. Those are fair demands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut do not demand that love disappear because accountability exists. Do not demand that a person who is changing be denied every place to stand. Silas has rules. He has consequences. He also has us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then back to the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd we have him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paige did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lights from the cameras hummed against the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind them, the community center doors opened and the basketball coach stepped out, saw the cameras, and wisely went back inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KCTX reporter finally said, \u201cAre you speaking for the department?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Thane said. \u201cI am speaking for myself as a private citizen.
