The frame shook. The mini-mart sign flashed in the corner. Bell stepped out from cover. The gunman turned. Category six\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked tired already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs category six deeply stupid?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFinally, a useful taxonomy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane reached for the coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sleeve of his uniform shirt shifted, and for a moment Gabriel saw the replacement patch near the upper chest where yesterday\u2019s shirt had been ruined. The wound was gone. The blood was gone. The bullet was in evidence. The part none of them knew how to fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video showed what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did not show what the air smelled like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did not show the tiny metal sound before the shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did not show Bell\u2019s line of fire, the clerk shaking behind the counter, the old man near the coolers, the exact instant when there was no time for permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did not show Thane choosing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It showed a werewolf getting shot and not staying shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It showed a hand crushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It showed enough for everyone to think they understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel put his phone face down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell,\u201d he said, forcing brightness into the room because that was what he did when silence got teeth, \u201cat least today can\u2019t be worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes. The Xterra fits in one parking space. It is more practical, less conspicuous, and less likely to invite comment on a day when public attention is already elevated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane walked to the little bowl by the garage door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKeys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark did not move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel picked up his coffee and stepped slightly back because history had become interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cThis is not a good operational choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKeys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not cruelly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the pack knew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane was not angry. Not really. He was done being moved around by everyone else\u2019s fear of what he looked like. The video had taken his choice and replayed it until strangers owned pieces of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Humvee was ugly, loud, broad, armored by personality, and impossible to pretend was anything other than what it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Thane wanted honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are invoking Alpha privilege over vehicle selection?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nearly choked on coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane held out one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked offended at the phrase despite being the one who had said it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not a formal governance structure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel whispered, \u201cIt is now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark glared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s hand remained open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not threatening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not asking either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark lasted four seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he reached into the pocket of his uniform trousers and produced the Humvee keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want the record to show that this is geometrically irresponsible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane took them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNoted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled. \u201cThe Alpha has spoken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark pointed at him. \u201cDo not enjoy this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have never enjoyed anything more responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Humvee rumbled out of the carport like a military appliance with unresolved emotional issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane drove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark sat in the back with his arms folded, radiating disapproval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel sat in the passenger seat, looking absurdly pleased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video was everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the Humvee would be too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cross Timber could stare at something honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the station, the parking lot noticed before the officers did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Humvee rolled in, broad and matte and absolutely unwilling to apologize for its dimensions. Thane parked it across two spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark made a sound from the back seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane shut off the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is within the lines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are two sets of lines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel opened his door. \u201cDemocracy has failed geometry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They climbed out in uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several officers looked over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One laughed quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One took in the Humvee, then Thane, then the badge, then decided whatever joke had been forming was not worth Crowe\u2019s future paperwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside, the station felt different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yesterday, the uniform had changed the way people looked at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the video had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some officers nodded at Thane with new warmth. Some watched his chest as if the hole might reappear. Some looked away too fast. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Briefing was not normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room was too alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe stood at the front with Hale beside her. Hale had coffee again, which meant the world had regained some structure. Voss and Rusk stood near the back, both in plain clothes, both looking like the shooting had followed them home and back again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe did not waste time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe video from yesterday\u2019s officer-involved shooting is circulating publicly. The department has not released bodycam footage pending review. You will not comment on the video. You will not speculate. You will not joke about werewolf healing, suspect injuries, bullets, hands, or anything else that makes me write a memo with your name in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her eyes moved across the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNobody says \u2018he\u2019s fine\u2019 while there is a bullet hole in evidence and a suspect in surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe looked directly at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat includes you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, Lieutenant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale stepped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale\u2019s voice was flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou made it one day before becoming a media event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane said, \u201cTwo days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hale closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not make it worse with math.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProbationary officers remain on FTO assignments. No special treatment. No interviews. No statements. If approached by citizens about the video, you redirect, set boundaries, and continue patrol. You are not the press release.
