Gabriel was leaning against the counter eating shredded cheese from the bag because he had apparently decided ingredients were food if approached with confidence. The trees beyond the rail stood green and ordinary. Mark\u2019s tablet clicked softly. Dishes shifted. You come home. You listen. You say things none of us expected and half the time they land harder than anything Eli bills me for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas\u2019s ears lowered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t mean to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just say what makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s the part.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s chest tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The right words were not always complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes they were just hard to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter Bell,\u201d Thane said, \u201cyou told me not to make his wrong thing mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane continued, \u201cI needed that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas looked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were hurting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t know if it was okay to say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas\u2019s voice dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was afraid it sounded like I was judging him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou weren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were protecting me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas looked back at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane saw them hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas had spent too much of his life believing protection meant standing between someone and a weapon, a door, a consequence, a version of himself he feared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was still learning that protection could be a sentence said quietly in a kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stepped closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou protect this pack in ways you don\u2019t notice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas gave one small, disbelieving breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, you do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI live here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI go to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI eat dinner. I sleep. I try not to mess up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s mouth moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is more than you think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane lifted one paw and touched Silas\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are not a project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas went still again, but differently this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s voice roughened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are not a probation condition we got attached to. You are not a rescue we keep around because we spent too much money to quit. You are not proof that we are good wolves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas\u2019s eyes shone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane held his shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are my pack.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The breath that came out of him sounded like it had been held much longer than the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stepped closer and pulled him in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas came carefully at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then not carefully at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He folded into Thane\u2019s chest with both arms around him and his claws held open against Thane\u2019s back so tightly it must have taken effort not to grip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane held him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except the house full of wolves pretending very hard not to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas\u2019s voice came muffled against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love you too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane closed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas made a wet sound that might have been a laugh if it had not been trying so hard not to be anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane held him longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because he could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Silas let him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because some things needed time enough to become true in the body, not just the ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually Silas pulled back, one paw dragging quickly across his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane pretended not to notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was also love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas looked toward the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey heard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas\u2019s ears flattened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked toward the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf Gabriel says one word, I eat his cereal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsteady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat would hurt him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas breathed in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fear was gone now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all his fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the fear that had followed him onto the deck had left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane squeezed his shoulder once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGo shower. Eat dinner. Sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you for telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you for being here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They went inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel was standing at the sink washing a plate that had absolutely not needed the level of attention he was giving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark was reviewing the duty tablet with his face angled down and his ears angled very much toward the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither of them said anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not one word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas stood there for half a second, waiting for the joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did not come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel only turned slightly and said, \u201cDinner\u2019s in the oven. His fur was brushed. His Red Dirt shirt lay folded beside his bag.
