said.

He wiped one paw over his face.

“No. You said it exactly right.”

Silas looked pleased and embarrassed at the same time.

That helped too.

They ate standing around the island because no one had the energy to pretend dinner needed chairs.

Chicken.

Rice.

Vegetables.

Coffee for Thane.

Water for Silas.

Gabriel reached for cheese.

Silas looked at him.

Gabriel withdrew his hand.

“I was moving it for safety.”

Mark said, “Unlikely.”

Thane ate because Silas had cooked and because his body needed something other than adrenaline, shame, and courthouse air.

For a few minutes, the den did what dens did.

It held.

After dinner, Gabriel washed plates without being asked.

Mark dried.

Silas packed leftovers into containers with Red Dirt efficiency.

Thane stood near the sink, useless and grateful.

Silas glanced at him.

“You are thinking about the wall.”

Thane looked at him.

“Yes.”

“You should.”

Gabriel went quiet.

Mark did too.

Silas set a lid onto a container.

“But not only the wall.”

Thane listened.

“You also think about the door.”

“The broken one?”

“Yes.”

Silas looked at him.

“And what was behind it.”

Thane’s throat tightened.

Silas continued.

“If you only think about the wall, you make the worst second the whole story.”

Thane stared at him.

Silas’s eyes did not move.

“If you only think about the door, you hide from what you did after.”

Mark’s face softened.

Gabriel leaned against the counter, silent.

Silas picked up the container.

“So think about both.”

Thane breathed in.

Out.

“Structure is not shame,” Gabriel said quietly.

Thane looked at him.

Gabriel shrugged.

“It fit.”

Mark nodded.

“It does.”

Thane looked back at Silas.

“I will think about both.”

Silas nodded.

“Good.”

The house settled around them.

Outside, night came down through the trees.

For the first time in two days, Thane did not feel like he was standing in the kitchen with Dale Whitcomb still in his paw.

The wall was still there.

The door was too.

And somewhere beyond both, children were sleeping in a place where no belt waited for them if they cried.

That did not make Thane right.

It made the work worth answering for.

Later, when the dishes were done and the others drifted toward their rooms, Thane stood alone in the great room.

His badge sat on the island where he had placed it before dinner.

He looked at it for a long moment.

Then picked it up.

Heavy.

Still clean, but not because he had never come close to staining it.

Clean because when the line was crossed, the truth had followed.

Clean because reports did not lie.

Clean because Eli had stood in court and made the judge look at the house.

Clean because Mason had asked if adults answer for what they do.

Yes.

They did.

Thane carried the badge to his room.

Behind him, the den went quiet.

Not empty.

Never empty.

Held.

That would have to be enough for tonight.

<p
