would be people who tried to make the wolves monsters.

There would be people who tried to make the clinic a symbol instead of a place where three employees had almost died at work.

Thane could already feel the coming noise.

But for one hour, in the back conference room, there was food on the table and all four wolves in the same place.

Gabriel ate like he had personally defeated famine.

Mark corrected a report time stamp while holding a container in one paw.

Silas sat beside Thane, reading nothing, saying little, just staying.

Mercer passed the open door once, looked in, and paused.

His eyes moved over them.

Thane in the bad department T-shirt.

Gabriel with bandaged fabric over a wound that no longer existed.

Mark typing with surgical focus.

Silas sitting among them like he had always belonged there and had only recently decided to stop pretending otherwise.

Mercer said, “This is not a break room.”

Gabriel looked up.

“It became one through community need.”

Mercer looked at the takeout.

“Is there any left?”

Silas stood immediately.

“Yes, sir.”

Mercer hesitated.

Just one fraction.

Then accepted the container Silas handed him.

“Thank you.”

Silas smiled.

“You’re welcome.”

Mercer looked at Thane.

Then at Silas.

Then back toward the hall.

“Finish your reports.”

He walked away with the food.

Gabriel watched him go.

“Silas fed command.”

Mark said, “A strategic development.”

Silas sat back down.

Outside, the night kept moving.

Inside, the den had extended itself to a police conference room full of paperwork and hard chairs.

The day had begun with a call no one wanted to make.

It ended with the people who could answer it still alive.

There were times to be subtle.

There were times to just get shit done.

And there were times afterward when the only sacred thing left to do was sit with your pack, eat while you could, and let the living stay living for a little while longer.

At four in the afternoon, the cabin was not awake enough for disaster.
