He entered through the front, Red Dirt shirt replaced by a dark hoodie, ears forward, jaw set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The desk officer looked at him, then toward the conference room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Silas did not wait to be invited all the way in. He stopped at the threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Learning boundaries did not mean asking less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It meant knowing where to stand until someone opened the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane saw him and stepped out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Silas looked him over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The blood was gone from Thane\u2019s fur. The ruined shirt was in evidence. He wore a department-issued T-shirt that fit badly across the shoulders and made Gabriel laugh every time he looked at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Silas did not laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHow many times?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane knew the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There would be people who tried to make the clinic a symbol instead of a place where three employees had almost died at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thane could already feel the coming noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But for one hour, in the back conference room, there was food on the table and all four wolves in the same place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabriel ate like he had personally defeated famine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark corrected a report time stamp while holding a container in one paw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Silas sat beside Thane, reading nothing, saying little, just staying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mercer passed the open door once, looked in, and paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His eyes moved over them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were times to be subtle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
