The air-conditioning hummed. The coffee maker clicked. You did not trick me into danger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s voice lowered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou walked first because that is who you are. Damage. Risk. Yes. I cannot promise none of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut I will not spend you. I will not use you like shields. I will not ask you to stand where the math does not work just because we are harder to kill than everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s mouth curved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood. Not Briggs. Not the blood. We moved. He hit us instead of them. We took the rifle. Patrol cuffed him. Nobody had to beg him anymore.
