{"id":936,"date":"2026-08-05T09:16:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T14:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/threewerewolves.com\/nightshift\/?p=936"},"modified":"2026-08-05T10:38:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T15:38:59","slug":"chapter-149-the-cook-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/threewerewolves.com\/nightshift\/archives\/936","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 149 \u2014 The Cook House"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By nine in the morning, the board had grown teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first version had been four victims and a bad batch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second version had names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By morning, Mark had turned the names into structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colored lines connected phones, vehicles, storage units, traffic stops, old addresses, purchase receipts, license-plate reads, witness statements, and one very angry handwritten note from Gabriel that read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>KETTLE IS TOO BORING TO BE THIS BUSY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark had left the note on the board because it was technically accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rhett Ketterman, called Kettle by people who apparently enjoyed making federal charges sound like a county fair nickname, sat near the center of the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not at the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark had refused to put him at the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHierarchy is not established,\u201d he said when Gabriel objected. \u201cOnly connectivity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stared at the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is in the middle of everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is connectivity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe has a nickname.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is not hierarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is called Kettle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is unfortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stood behind both of them, arms folded, staring at the victim photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bobby Crane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lori Meeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calvin Dorsey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tasha Morrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their photographs anchored the left side of the board so no one could pretend the rest of it was only lines and names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lieutenant Crowe entered with Deputy Chief Mercer and Chief Whitaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe looked at the board first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whitaker looked at Thane\u2019s shirt second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not the shirt from the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That one was evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not the replacement shirt from last night either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That one had gone into a laundry basket with a kind of grim resignation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was shirt three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whitaker noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDetective Thane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, Chief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo we need to put uniform replacement in the deployment matrix?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel murmured, \u201cTextile attrition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cThat is a valid category.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not look away from the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whitaker let it sit for one beat, then turned to Crowe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do we know this morning?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe moved to the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cColby Sutter remains in custody. Surveillance teams are sitting on Ketterman\u2019s residence, Timmons\u2019s apartment, Polk\u2019s lawn-care lot, and three storage locations tied to Sheila Brackett.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer looked at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPhones?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark tapped the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPreliminary extraction from Colby Sutter\u2019s primary burner shows message traffic consistent with low-level distribution. He received pickup locations through coded language. \u2018Tools,\u2019 \u2018glass,\u2019 \u2018clean,\u2019 \u2018hot,\u2019 and \u2018quiet\u2019 recur. His phone does not show source supply directly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel said, \u201cBecause Colby was disposable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark moved to another image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMason Ketterman\u2019s phone is more useful. Colby Sutter smelled strongly of finished product and vehicle residue. When Night Shift drove near her apartment this morning, exterior air at the parking lot had a faint matching solvent trace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou drove near?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou did not stop?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou did not sniff under her door?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked offended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel said, \u201cWe have standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane said, \u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe ignored them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStorage units?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark pointed to the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSheila Brackett manages Red Prairie Storage. Ketterman rented Unit 18B under a cash arrangement not in the normal system. She also granted gate access after hours to Mason\u2019s truck and Darren Polk\u2019s lawn-care trailer. Search warrant signed twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whitaker looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou think source is there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane studied the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark turned to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPackaging maybe. Money. Product. Not source.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBasis?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSutter didn\u2019t smell like a cook site. The truck didn\u2019t either. It smelled like product moved through it, not made in it. If the storage unit was the quiet room, Sutter would smell more like it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned back in his chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is grossly specific.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAgreed. But storage may lead us to the source.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen we take storage first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whitaker looked around the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNarcotics leads the warrant. Night Shift supports. No shortcuts. No creative entries. A small office stood near the entrance, its window filled with faded signs about late fees, moving boxes, and security cameras that did not work as well as the sign implied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The warrant team moved clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Narcotics in front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patrol securing the property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evidence tech ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Night Shift present but not performing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane liked that less than he understood it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheila Brackett stood outside the office in cuffed hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unit 18B opened on the second cut of the bolt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smell rolled out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finished meth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plastic bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cardboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cheap gloves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peppermint gum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the sour solvent trace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not source strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But enough to make Thane\u2019s nose wrinkle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s ears flattened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stepped near the threshold but did not enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPhotograph first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evidence tech moved in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unit contained lawn equipment in the front, exactly as advertised by Darren Polk\u2019s cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trimmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gas cans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plastic fertilizer bins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind them, hidden by a hanging tarp, sat stacked plastic totes, vacuum-sealed bags, digital scales, empty packaging, boxed phones, and cash bundled in amounts that said business had been brisk and moral failure had been profitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rusk looked into the unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot a hobby.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voss said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark watched evidence tags appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPackaging hub.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane smelled the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProduct came through here. Fentanyl trace too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at the sealed bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey were mixing here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe solvent is on the outside of things. Not soaked into the room. This is where they touched what came from elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cConsistent with distribution packaging.
