The cabin smelled like coffee, bacon, clean laundry, and the faint leftover trace of ladder dust that had followed Silas home from Station One no matter how thoroughly he had showered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel was at the stove. Mark was at the island with a tablet and a mug. Thane stood near the windows, watching sunlight move across the deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas came downstairs in loose pants and an old shirt, still a little sleepy, fur slightly uneven on one side where he had slept hard enough not to care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He poured coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Took one drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then said, \u201cWe should feed them sometime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel turned from the stove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho is them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStation One.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll of Station One?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas paused with the mug near his muzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo. Calder, Nina, Wes. Maybe whoever else was at training, but I figured small is better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel narrowed his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are inviting firefighters to my kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas looked around the enormous kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTechnically, to our kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel set the spatula down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was a legal answer. I don\u2019t like when you and Mark align before I\u2019ve eaten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cHe is correct.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pointed at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Silas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou want them here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas shrugged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was casual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not fake casual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just modest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey worked with me yesterday. Calder fed everybody firehouse coffee and station leftovers, which felt like a cry for help. Gabriel cooks too much anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel slowly turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI cook exactly enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cYou routinely produce surplus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor emotional security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is still surplus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas took another drink of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo we should use it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then back at Silas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is manipulation through practical hospitality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas smiled faintly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs it working?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel picked up the spatula again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat time?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas blinked once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like he had expected more resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvening? It had held pack meals, quiet breakfasts, late-shift decompressions, private arguments, dumb jokes, and more coffee than any table should have been forced to endure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tonight, it would hold others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not strangers exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane had spent a long time thinking of the cabin as shelter. Reinforced walls. Long sight lines. Wide doors. Heavy furniture. No one speak to me unless it is about meat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at his tablet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVegetables should also be included.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel did not turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI said no one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas leaned closer to Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By four-thirty, Gabriel had turned the kitchen into a controlled incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel rejected chaos on culinary grounds. Chaos was for people who did not know where the knives were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was brisket because it is a staple. There were ribs because Thane had looked at the brisket and Gabriel had said, \u201cDo not use your eyes to request additional protein,\u201d then made ribs anyway. There were roasted vegetables because Mark had written them onto a list and taped it to a cabinet at eye level. There were potatoes, rolls, salad, beans, three sauces, one pan of something spicy Gabriel called \u201cnot for cowards,\u201d and another milder pan after Mark stared at him for too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas helped without being told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was normal now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He moved through the kitchen with the ease of someone who knew where things belonged because they belonged to him too. He pulled trays from the warming drawer. Set plates by the door. Carried drinks to the deck. Came back for napkins. Stole one rib end and got caught because Gabriel had eyes like a food hawk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pointed a spoon at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was theft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas chewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are chewing the evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark, passing with a bowl of salad, said, \u201cDestroyed evidence creates adverse inference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIs that real?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane shrugged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt sounds real when he says it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel pointed at all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis kitchen is hostile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane picked up a tray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere do you want this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked toward the deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLong table. Center. Not too close to the edge. Tails exist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is actually correct.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked deeply pleased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI occasionally perceive reality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They set the deck simply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No decorations beyond what the place already had. Trees. Evening light. The long table. Heavy chairs. Space enough for tails, broad shoulders, firefighters who sat like they were always ready to stand up, and a fire chief who would absolutely notice whether the railings were built properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas carried out glasses and set them where Mark indicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because Mark had created a plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Mark had looked at the table once and quietly moved the breakable things out of easy tail range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTail clearance?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat phrase followed me home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is useful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane saw Silas pause near the table, one paw resting on the back of a heavy chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was where they ate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was where the pack sat after bad shifts. Where Gabriel had made jokes when the room needed air. Where Mark had corrected details because accuracy was one way he cared. Where Silas had learned he could reach for food without asking who paid for it. Here, I am pack who volunteers at the fire station. Same facts. Different order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane liked that answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas tapped the chair once with a claw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think I like them knowing both.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou really do not mind?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cabin is yours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deck. The woods. The wide doors. The long table. The home they had built when the world had not known what to do with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOurs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nina Torres arrived thirty seconds later in a pickup with Wes Boone in the passenger seat holding a covered container like he had been entrusted with evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas stepped off the deck and crossed the drive to meet them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not rush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also did not hang back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, Thane thought, was the part he liked most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas was not waiting to be invited into his own invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calder got out of his truck and looked at the cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not wide-eyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not dramatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just taking it in like a man who had spent a life noticing structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large log construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wide front steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deep porch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heavy door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reinforced hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open turning space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calder looked at Thane, who had come down to meet them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis place has load ratings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane smiled faintly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
