Cross Timber had been smiling at the wolves more often since the press conference and the flood rescue. People waved from porches. Kids pressed their hands to patrol-car windows. Older people offered handshakes with both hands and said things like <em>I saw the video<\/em> or <em>my nephew works at the hospital<\/em> or <em>thank you for coming when my husband was confused last month.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But cookies were still a development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman stood just inside the police department lobby with a metal tin tucked against her chest. She was in her sixties, maybe, hair pinned neatly beneath a knitted cap, a long raincoat buttoned wrong at the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane saw the tin and stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel saw Thane stop and immediately looked delighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark saw the tin and looked cautious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman smiled at all three of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMorning, officers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not wolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not heroes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMorning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI brought these for the shift,\u201d she said. \u201cNot just you three. Everyone. That feels important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel nodded solemnly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She opened the tin a fraction. Peanut butter cookies. Still warm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy husband was the gentleman at the QuickMart,\u201d she said, looking toward Thane. \u201cThe one who was confused. Low blood sugar. You were there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The broken glass. The false knife. The customer who had been terrified until they realized the man needed help, not force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe talks about you all the time now. Mostly about how you did not make him feel stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stood still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was better at handling armed suspects than gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman saw it and softened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don\u2019t have to say anything. I just wanted you to know it mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She held out one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell\u2019s voice appeared in his head, dry and exact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A handshake after a call is fine. A hug during a domestic disturbance is not.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane took her hand gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her grip was small. Warm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman nodded, then looked at Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou must be the funny one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel placed a hand over his chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProfessionally, sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd you,\u201d she said to Mark, \u201cyou\u2019re the gray one who writes everything down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy husband says that is why the ambulance people believed what happened right away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour husband provided useful information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe says you gave him a blanket and wrote down the name of his favorite baseball team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark glanced at Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel was grinning now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was operationally relevant,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am sure it was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she pushed the cookie tin gently toward them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlease make sure the others get some.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nina leaned out through the dispatch window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeave them there. If Gabriel touches the tin first, nobody else gets cookies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked offended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI distribute joy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou distribute crumbs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman set the tin beside Nina\u2019s keyboard and went on her way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane watched her leave through the glass doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside, rain had stopped sometime before dawn. The street glistened beneath low gray clouds. A teenager across the road saw Thane through the lobby window and waved hard enough to nearly drop his backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane raised one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The teenager grinned and kept walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPublic relations suit you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour first fan club has baked goods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark adjusted the strap of his duty belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cookies were for the department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is exactly what someone says while preserving the best one for later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears flattened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not preserve anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nina lifted the tin lid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTop of class math says there are now seventeen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stared at the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not discussing this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe\u2019s voice carried from the briefing-room doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInside. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room quieted when they entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because the three wolves had arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That part had become normal enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the board at the front of the room listed the overnight call summary, and the numbers at the bottom were not normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Armed robbery reports: 0<\/strong><br><strong>Shots-fired calls: 0<\/strong><br><strong>Gun-brandishing complaints: 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe stood at the front with a tablet in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBefore anyone congratulates themselves,\u201d she said, \u201cwe are not becoming complacent because the city has had a quieter month.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She tapped the screen behind her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOpen displays of firearms during robberies and street disputes are down. Dramatically. We all know why.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few eyes shifted toward Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople saw a gun fired at an officer. They saw that officer stay upright. They saw a suspect lose control of that weapon. Some of the criminals who used to wave guns around like they were magic are thinking harder before they do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell leaned against the wall beside Thane\u2019s row, arms folded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut,\u201d Crowe said, \u201cdo not confuse a lower gun-display rate with a lower danger rate. Cowards adapting is not the same thing as crime disappearing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room settled further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDomestic abuse does not stop because somebody is afraid of being filmed. Stalking does not stop. Fraud does not stop. Planned theft does not stop. The people who want power simply get quieter about how they take it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She let that stay in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhich means patrol work gets harder, not easier. You do not wait for a weapon to appear before you take a call seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark made a small note in the margin of his briefing pad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cho saw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not turn that into a quote poster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is relevant guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose can be relevant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cho took a sip of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour FTO evaluation is nearly complete. I can still write \u2018unable to distinguish useful note from decorative note.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark closed the pad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe moved on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFinal late-phase FTO week. Bell with Thane. Ortiz with Gabriel. Cho with Mark. You have more responsibility. That does not mean you have less supervision. Your FTOs are evaluating whether you can carry the job without someone standing over every sentence you write.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel raised a hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo we get a ceremony?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA small pin?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe a laminated\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel lowered his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHostile workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell muttered, \u201cYou will survive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEmotionally, uncertain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe finished assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRoutine patrol. Business checks. Theft reports. Traffic complaints. Do your jobs. And remember: just because the city is smiling at you does not mean it gets to distract you from the call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The briefing broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell stopped Thane near the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReady?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell folded his arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have been doing well. That is true. Today could be boring. It could be loud. It could be nothing at all. Your job is not to make the day important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBe useful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell\u2019s mouth shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow you\u2019re learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They split.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three patrol cars. Three FTOs. Three rookies who were almost not rookies anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city went on around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s first call was a security alarm at a closed insurance office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell made him check the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doors. Windows. Rear access. Roofline. Alarm panel. No forced entry. No suspect. A loose exterior sign had shifted in the wind and tripped a motion sensor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane wrote the report in four sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell read it from the passenger seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane turned his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo correction?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDon\u2019t get used to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked back at the laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou say that every time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause every time, you look like you expect applause.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell\u2019s expression made clear that he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By ten-thirty, they had handled a parking complaint outside a dentist\u2019s office, a minor crash in a grocery-store lot, and a welfare check on an elderly man who had been asleep with his phone on silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the welfare check, the man opened the door, saw Thane, and immediately smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHell, it\u2019s the bulletproof officer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s ears went back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell stepped in before Thane could answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSir, Officer Thane is not bulletproof. We are here because your daughter could not reach you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man\u2019s smile faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight. Sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane said, \u201cIt\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI saw you on television.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cScared me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not know what to do with that either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen I saw you talk at the station. You said you were a rookie trying not to screw up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel would have loved that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane tried not to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man smiled again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat sounded honest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at Bell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell gave him nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So Thane looked back at the man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old man nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood. Keep doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They cleared the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell drove for two blocks before speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot a landmark.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen stop standing like one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stared out the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The radio cracked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree-oh-four, available for a commercial burglary alarm at Cedar Ridge Animal Clinic, rear access. Keyholder en route. Alarm company reports rear motion and glass-break activation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell\u2019s hands shifted on the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow we have a call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They arrived at Cedar Ridge Animal Clinic under a pale noon sky that still held the gray edge of weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clinic sat on a quiet side street behind a grooming salon and a feed store. The front windows were bright with cartoon cats and dogs.
