They said they were hoping to meet Night Shift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel opened his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Closed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then said, \u201cWyoming sent wolves?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWyoming did not send them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe looked at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane was already moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFront desk,\u201d Crowe said into the phone. \u201cHave them remain in the lobby. We are coming up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She hung up and pointed at the trio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCalm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are calm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was speaking preemptively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel straightened his jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf two unknown werewolves drove from Wyoming to meet us, I reserve the right to be socially unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cYou are always socially unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen I reserve the right to be consistent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe gave them the look that meant move before she regretted allowing language to continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hallway toward the front lobby had seen many strange things since the three of them joined the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">News crews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angry citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children with drawings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer carrying traffic cones as a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A man trying to file a complaint against a squirrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even so, when Thane stepped into the lobby and saw two full-time werewolves standing politely near the seating area, the world seemed to widen by a few feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were not like him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No werewolf was exactly like another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One was dark gray with black markings along his muzzle, shoulders, and forearms, a pattern that made him look carved from storm clouds and charcoal. He stood maybe a head shorter than Thane, leaner through the torso, with the heavy hands and thick wrists of someone who worked for a living. His eyes were amber, bright with barely contained nerves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other was brown with black markings across his cheek, chest, and back, the dark pattern running like brushstrokes through warmer fur. He was smaller than Silas, broader than Gabriel, with calm eyes and a posture that suggested he had decided to be composed and was currently enforcing that decision by will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both wore durable work pants modified properly for tails, heavy canvas shirts, and no shoes, because no wolf in the lobby needed to pretend paws were human feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The front-desk officer stood behind the counter wearing the expression of a man who had been trained for many things but not this exact arrangement of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gray wolf saw Thane first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His face changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a second, the composure cracked wide open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brown wolf\u2019s ears flicked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know,\u201d the gray wolf said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he straightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mostly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stopped a few feet away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m Thane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gray wolf laughed once under his breath, disbelieving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah. Sorry. I\u2019m Dane Holliker. This is Cal Renshaw. We drove down from Laramie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal lifted one paw in greeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark stepped forward slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou drove from Wyoming to Cross Timber?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo days, with stops. We both had time off between jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cConstruction?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel looked pleased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI knew it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal\u2019s mouth curved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot exactly subtle, is it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cWerewolf strength and endurance are commercially practical in construction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane looked at Mark with immediate delight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou sound exactly like the interviews.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned toward Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is strange.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane held out a paw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood to meet you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane looked at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the thing happened too fast for anyone to stop and not fast enough to be threatening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane stepped forward and hugged him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full arms around him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a polite side hug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a fan photo lean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A real, crushing, startled, grateful hug from a wolf who had driven hundreds of miles and apparently reached the limit of keeping it together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lobby froze again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stood still for a half second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then slowly put one arm around him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane\u2019s breath hitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal looked at the ceiling like this was both predictable and deeply inconvenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSorry,\u201d Cal said. \u201cHe had a whole plan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane\u2019s voice was muffled against Thane\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt lasted four seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s face softened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark watched quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane released Thane and stepped back, ears low with embarrassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI told myself handshake. Normal. Respectful. Do not tackle the detective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou did not tackle me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel said, \u201cTechnically, he embraced with momentum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cAccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane covered his eyes with one paw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal patted his shoulder once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere it is. You have met them. We can drive home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane dropped his paw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat brought you here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question quieted both of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane looked at Cal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal nodded once, giving him the first words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane took a breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe saw you online first. Like everybody, I guess. The robbery video. Then the press conference. Then the garden thing with the kid. Then Roseway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane felt the clinic name pass through him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal continued when Dane paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe watched all of it. Not like celebrity stuff. Not only that. We watched how you stood there and didn\u2019t apologize for existing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah. That. We have been careful our whole lives. Not hiding exactly, because it\u2019s hard to hide this.\u201d He gestured vaguely at himself. \u201cBut keeping small. Taking jobs where people expected us to lift things and not talk too much. Staying out of trouble. Staying out of cameras. Letting people be weird if it meant they stayed calm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal\u2019s voice stayed level, but the emotion under it was steady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen there you were. Police detectives. On camera. Covered in blood sometimes, which was not ideal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel lifted one paw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do not recommend that part.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut not hiding,\u201d Cal said. \u201cNot pretending. We just wanted to shake your paws and say thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane glanced down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd apparently hug you without authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane\u2019s mouth curved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAuthorization retroactively granted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane laughed, relieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that exact moment, Mercer walked past the lobby with a folder in one hand and a mug in the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He took three steps beyond the doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His eyes moved from Thane to Gabriel to Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then to Dane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then to Cal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then back to Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were now five full-time werewolves standing in the police lobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer stared for one long second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel\u2019s ears lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer pointed at the group with the folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAre we recruiting wolves now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Actually laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel said, \u201cNot formally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark said, \u201cNot at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer looked at Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you for being the only one who understands what panic feels like from the administrative side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal lifted both paws slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSir, we are just visiting. We drove down to say hello.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane added, \u201cHuge fans. But I think we stop treating their comfort like our assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was a damn good sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark\u2019s ears lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel leaned back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal said, \u201cYou made it look possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane did not say they had paid for that possibility in blood, fear, courtrooms, mistakes, and bad seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost was not the point at breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The road was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you ever need anything,\u201d Thane said, \u201ccall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal\u2019s did too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are not trying to\u2014\u201d Cal began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCall anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas smiled faintly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPack does not always mean same den.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSometimes it means somebody answers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The table went quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel stared at Silas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane felt that one land everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane nodded once, hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen same back. Wyoming is not close, but if you need us\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel smiled softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will keep that in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moment warmed back into breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When they finally left, it took twenty minutes longer than necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were leftovers packed because Gabriel refused to let road travel happen without meat. There was coffee in large travel cups. There were numbers exchanged properly, not just vague promises. There were photos taken on the porch after Dane asked with great dignity and Cal pretended he had not also wanted them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One serious photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One where Gabriel ruined the pose by pointing at Dane\u2019s ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One where Silas gave the felony face at Gabriel and Dane nearly lost composure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the 4Runner started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane stood by the driver\u2019s door, looking at them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane, Gabriel, Mark, and Silas stood on the porch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal lifted a paw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSafe travels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane looked at Silas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTake care, man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silas smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel lifted one of the packed leftover bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou forget this, I will be offended across state lines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane hurried back for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal called, \u201cHe would have noticed by Oklahoma City.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gabriel handed it over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not gamble with brisket.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane laughed, hugged Gabriel this time with warning and consent, shook Mark\u2019s paw, hugged Silas briefly, then stood in front of Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time he held out a paw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then hugged him first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dane froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then hugged back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When they separated, Dane\u2019s eyes were wet again and he did not bother hiding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cal put one paw on his shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCome on. Construction sites. High school hallways. Jobs where strength had been useful but pride had stayed carefully folded.
