He saw you on the news a while back. No one occupied the passenger seats in the three units assigned to Thane, Gabriel, and Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The empty seats felt larger than they should have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowe stood at the front with the nightly board behind her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCongratulations again,\u201d she said. \u201cYou are clear to solo patrol. You call for backup when you need it. You call a supervisor when the scene needs one. You ask questions when you do not know. That is not failure. You may be requested when appropriate. That does not turn you into independent search teams, canine units, tactical assets, or a reason to skip procedure. The caller had seen someone near the loading docks with a long metal bar and assumed they were trying to force open the rear door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane arrived first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The store sat dark beneath a strip of yellow security lighting. A delivery truck was parked on the neighboring lot. The air smelled of wet asphalt, cardboard, discarded packing foam, and the faint electrical heat of a rooftop unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A figure stood near the rear storage area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Male. Thin. Hood pulled up. I heard somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSet the bar down,\u201d Thane repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI heard somebody in there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked past him toward the storage shed at the end of the loading dock. A small detached structure, padlocked, no lights inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA girl.\u201d The man\u2019s voice broke. \u201cI heard her crying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane kept his hands open at his sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you see her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you call anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy phone died.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man looked toward the shed again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was trying to get it open.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowbar lowered slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane had a possible burglary. A possible trespass. A possible person trapped inside. And a man with a tool who might be frightened enough to make a bad decision if Thane made one first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He keyed his radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree-oh-one to dispatch. I have one male with a crowbar behind Morrow Appliance. Subject reports possible person trapped in detached storage shed. Request additional unit and fire for welfare access.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCopy,\u201d Nina said. \u201cUnit Three-oh-seven en route.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the man again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSet the bar down. Then step away from it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowbar hit the pavement with a hollow metal clack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man stepped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood,\u201d Thane said. \u201cWhat is your name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCaleb.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCaleb, stay where you are. Officer Janice Bell\u2014not Bell, but a different Bell from day watch, which had confused Thane for the first three weeks of academy\u2014took position with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They checked the shed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The padlock had not been broken. No one was inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they did find the source of the crying: a small orange cat wedged in an open gap beneath the rear flooring, scared and yowling every time the wind shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caleb sat on the curb while animal control was called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had not been trying to steal anything. He had been sleeping in the nearby bus shelter, heard the cat, and convinced himself a child was trapped because the sound had pulled at something old in him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Bell ran his name. No active warrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The appliance-store manager, reached by phone, did not want trespass charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane stood with Caleb while they waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou did not need to pry the shed open,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou could have called.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy phone was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou could have gone to the fire station. Or the convenience store. Or found somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caleb looked down at his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought if I left, it would stop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane understood that answer more than he wanted to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe next time you think someone is trapped,\u201d he said, \u201cyou get help before you make a hole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caleb nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, Officer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cat came out on its own before animal control arrived, streaking beneath the loading dock and vanishing into the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caleb watched it go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGuess it wasn\u2019t a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou going to arrest me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thane looked at the crowbar resting beside the patrol unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caleb blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause nobody was hurt. Nothing was damaged.
