Soundcheck \u2013 5:12 PM \u2013 The Throttle Room, Tulsa<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the dim, echoing venue, chaos had matured into its final form: full-blown soundcheck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane stood at the front of house, icy eyes squinting at a sea of glowing signal lights that should<\/em> have all been green\u2026 but weren\u2019t. His clawed fingers hovered above the board like a predator deciding which channel to maul first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On stage, Jonah was in a drum-induced trance, hammering out an unnecessarily aggressive soundcheck solo that sounded like someone beating a metal trash can full of raccoons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJonah!\u201d Thane barked into the com. \u201cI said kick drum, not war crimes in F minor!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m setting the mood!\u201d Jonah called back. \u201cYou want energy or not?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark stood at the lighting desk, index finger poised over a cue button, jaw clenched so hard you could\u2019ve used it to cut glass. The VariLites had just decided they were unionized and on break, one was strobing in protest, and another was spinning lazily in an endless barrel roll like it had given up on life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rico was tuning, not really to any specific<\/em> note\u2014just plucking and turning knobs like a DJ looking for a vibe. Cassie tapped her mic and said, \u201cCheck one, check one, check\u2014this smells like old soup in here. Is that normal?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maya was leaning into her amp, one hand wrapped around the neck of her guitar, unleashing a soundcheck riff so filthy it might\u2019ve actually insulted someone\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m getting feedback,\u201d she shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane slammed the solo button on channel 14. \u201cYou\u2019re not getting<\/em> feedback, your amp is trying to communicate with the spirit realm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the back, Gabriel\u2014sipping a comically large coffee with \u201cHELLO I\u2019M A PROBLEM\u201d scribbled on the cup\u2014called out with a grin, \u201cEverything sounds great back here!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cassie turned. \u201cOf course it does, bass players never get complaints.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel raised a brow. \u201cBecause we\u2019re the glue, baby.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re glue in that you\u2019re sticky and inexplicably everywhere,\u201d Maya shot back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark, not looking up from his console, added: \u201cAlso he smells like tape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rico struck a chord that screeched like a banshee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay!\u201d Thane roared over the din, now holding an XLR cable in one hand and what appeared to be a chicken nugget someone had left on the power amp. \u201cIf anyone else touches anything,<\/em> I will personally rewire this entire rig using your nervous systems as patch cable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A brief silence fell. Somewhere, a single monitor whined pitifully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cassie cleared her throat. \u201cSo\u2026 do we do the encore now or later?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark sighed so hard the fog machine accidentally triggered. \u201cI am one flickering light cue away from walking into the river.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane grabbed his com mic. \u201cGabriel, level check.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel slung his bass into place and played a clean, low E that filled the room like thunder through a cave. He looked at Thane with a wink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane\u2019s eye twitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026Level\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark finally hit a working light cue. Six VL2Bs bathed the stage in a glorious red haze. The smoke curled around the amps, the glow caught Maya\u2019s pick mid-riff, and for one brief, shining moment\u2014Feral Eclipse looked like an actual, professional touring band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Jonah shouted, \u201cLet\u2019s do \u2018Silver Fangs\u2019 from the top!\u201d and accidentally hit a crash so hard it shut off half the stage power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cassie blinked. \u201cIs that\u2026 supposed to happen?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane just stood still, cable dangling from one clawed hand, and muttered, \u201cWhy do I even have surge protectors\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel raised his coffee cup and toasted the static-laced silence. \u201cSoundcheck complete!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
