Most still smelled like fog fluid and adrenaline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A velvet rope had been put up in front of the stone dais where the band sat with water bottles, sharpies, and a thousand-yard stare of post-gig exhaustion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first, it was just the usual:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Swooning goths telling Cassie she was their patron saint of eyeliner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A man in chainmail asking Jonah to sign a loaf of sourdough<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A woman dressed as a mourning Victorian widow sobbing to Maya about the raw emotional symbolism of \u201cFuneral Bloom\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And then\u2026 things got <em>weird-er.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily was standing near the entrance, clipboard in hand, keeping the flow of fans moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when <em>she<\/em> walked in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A woman dressed in head-to-toe crushed velvet with a taxidermy crow strapped to her shoulder and a leatherbound book clasped to her chest like a holy relic. Her mask was bone-white and shaped like a skull, but the <em>real weird<\/em> was in her eyes. Unblinking. Fixated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She didn\u2019t go for Gabriel. Didn\u2019t even flinch at Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She zeroed in on <strong>Rico.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour chords\u2026 they ripple across the soulstream,\u201d she intoned, stepping closer, voice like someone had taught an audiobook AI how to do necromancy. \u201cI saw you in my dreams\u2026 before I was born.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rico blinked. \u201cUh\u2026 cool?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She opened the leather book. Inside were hand-drawn sketches \u2014 <strong>hundreds<\/strong> of them \u2014 of <em>Rico.<\/em> Playing, sitting, eating a burrito, one with him in a spacesuit on Mars. Some of them\u2026 looked traced. Others didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rico\u2019s eyes went wide. \u201c&#8230;Okay that\u2019s a lot of me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily stepped in quickly, voice calm. \u201cHey there! Let\u2019s keep moving \u2014 let\u2019s not crowd the band \u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fan tilted her head in a <em>perfectly synchronized<\/em> crow-like twitch. \u201cYou don\u2019t understand. He\u2019s my chord twin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily looked like she was starting to <em>lose her cool,<\/em> and Rico was definitely on the verge of bolting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>That\u2019s when <em>Thane<\/em> stepped in.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>No warning. No sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just the solid, unmistakable thud of clawed feet on stone and his looming presence <em>right behind<\/em> her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She turned slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His eyes \u2014 icy and sharp \u2014 locked with hers. One brow lifted. He didn\u2019t growl. Didn\u2019t say a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the <em>message<\/em> was crystal clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Back. Off. Now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The crow-lady looked at him, then back at Rico, then silently turned\u2026 and vanished into the crowd like smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily let out a breath she\u2019d been holding like it was her last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rico leaned forward, wide-eyed. \u201cBro\u2026 that was terrifying. But like&#8230; thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily turned to Thane. Her voice quiet, careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2026 I\u2019m sorry,\u201d she said. \u201cAgain. That could\u2019ve gone sideways, and I shouldn\u2019t have waited that long to ask for help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane stared at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then \u2014 just as her shoulders tensed \u2014 he gave a single, small nod. The kind that carried all the weight of a second chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Message received.<br><strong>Forgiven.<\/strong><br>Just don\u2019t ever cross that line again.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily exhaled again, visibly relieved, and drifted off to wrangle the rest of the crowd before anything else could go full crow-mystic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rico still looked stunned. \u201cDude.
