Gabriel stopped mid-laugh. Mark\u2019s eyes narrowed. Thane\u2019s hand slowly moved toward the coiled cable clipped to his belt\u2014not to throw, but to <em>wrap around someone\u2019s throat<\/em> if it came to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The door opened with a soft <em>click<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He stepped out like he owned the block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six-foot-two, draped in a midnight blue overcoat, clean-shaven, with silver temples and a face that said <em>I\u2019ve ordered lives to be ended and still slept well<\/em>. His accent was subtle but undeniable: Russian, refined, and laced with a threat that didn\u2019t need volume to be lethal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMikhail Petrov,\u201d he said. \u201cI represent\u2026 admirers. You impressed some very important people tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot interested,\u201d Thane growled. \u201cWe don\u2019t do requests from guys who roll up with guns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mikhail smirked. \u201cYou will when I tell you what\u2019s at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He waved one hand, and like shadows becoming men, two dozen Russian bodyguards stepped out of alleyways and tinted vehicles. All armed. All silent. And worst of all \u2014 calm. No twitchy hands. No panic. Just professionals waiting for a green light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark stepped in front of Emily and Cassie without a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want trouble,\u201d Petrov continued, gesturing with his bare hands. \u201cBut trouble follows power. And you three\u2026\u201d \u2014 his eyes swept over Thane, Gabriel, and Mark \u2014 \u201cyou radiate it. That\u2019s what we want. A private concert. One night. Just music. We\u2019ll pay handsomely. Everyone walks away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut not <em>right now,<\/em> huh?\u201d Gabriel\u2019s eyes flared. \u201cYou roll up, flash your  rifles, scare the pack\u2026 that\u2019s not a request. That\u2019s a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane\u2019s voice was low and deadly. \u201cAnd we don\u2019t <em>do<\/em> threats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suddenly the mood turned. The wolves moved as one, stepping forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel shoved the nearest bodyguard aside with a growl. Mark bared his teeth at the man reaching for his weapon. Thane locked eyes with Petrov and stepped directly into his personal space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo claws yet,\u201d Thane said, his voice like gravel. \u201cBut we are <em>this close<\/em> to painting the pavement with your entire security team. You don\u2019t get to <em>keep<\/em> anyone. You don\u2019t get to <em>take<\/em> anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petrov, to his credit, didn\u2019t flinch. But his smile cracked just slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane didn\u2019t blink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel leaned in, voice full of fire. \u201cYou want a show? Fine. But if you so much as <em>breathe wrong<\/em> in our direction, I swear we\u2019ll dismantle your empire one bloodied limb at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Petrov raised a hand. His guards immediately lowered their rifles and stepped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVery well,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have spine. I respect that. You <em>will<\/em> perform tomorrow night for my associates \u2014 on neutral ground, you choose the setlist, and your humans stay safe. No cameras. No surprises.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He adjusted his coat. \u201cBut you don\u2019t get to threaten a man like me and walk away with <em>just<\/em> the deal you came for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh, we\u2019re not done,\u201d Thane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He crossed his arms. \u201cYou want a show? Great. But it costs more than money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petrov arched a brow. \u201cName your price.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane\u2019s eyes narrowed. \u201cYou fund a music scholarship. Local. Public university. Big enough to matter. Open to anyone\u2014especially kids who can\u2019t afford conservatory tuition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark\u2019s voice cut in, rough and final. \u201cNo strings. No credit. No blood money tagged on the nameplate. You do it <em>quietly<\/em>, or we walk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time, Mikhail Petrov actually looked surprised. \u201cA scholarship?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane shrugged. \u201cEvery empire needs at least <em>one<\/em> redeeming legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petrov considered this. Then slowly, he smiled \u2014 this time, a real one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCity College of New York,\u201d he said. \u201cThey have a music program. I\u2019ll have papers signed by noon. You have my word.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel stepped back. \u201cWe\u2019ll hold you to that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re performers,\u201d Petrov said. \u201cI\u2019m sure you understand the importance of\u2026 keeping promises.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that, he turned back toward his SUV and vanished into the black interior.
