Thane knew it. The poor SUV that had to reverse down a one-way street to make room <em>definitely<\/em> knew it. But there it was \u2014 thirty thousand pounds of steel, speakers, and rock star energy crawling down Main Street like it belonged there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the side, someone (read: Gabriel) had taped a giant poster that said <em>WE HEARD THERE WOULD BE CUPCAKES.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They parked in the <em>mayor\u2019s reserved spot.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane looked out the tinted windows at the brick fa\u00e7ade of Edmond City Hall and groaned. \u201cWe should not be doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were <em>invited,<\/em>\u201d Gabriel said, buttoning up a fresh black Feral Eclipse hoodie over his usual chaos. \u201cThis is a civic duty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m wearing jeans that smell like smoke,\u201d Maya said, stretching in the aisle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cassie, scrolling her phone, added, \u201cYou were literally in a fire pit jam circle last night. It\u2019s earned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rico flipped down his sunglasses and strummed the opening chords of <em>Welcome to the Jungle<\/em> as the doors opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The moment the crew stepped out, all hell broke loose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because apparently, <em>someone<\/em> had tipped off social media. A whole swarm of fans was already there \u2014 clustered across the courthouse lawn, perched on benches, waving signs that said things like <strong>\u201cMake Rock Feral Again\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cLet the Wolves In!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A police officer stationed at the door \u2014 one who had absolutely been at the cookout last night \u2014 grinned and waved them in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUpstairs,\u201d he said. \u201cRoom 204. Cupcakes and the proclamation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonah turned to Gabriel. \u201cDo you think they\u2019ll let us hang the proclamation in the garage?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel shrugged. \u201cOnly if it glows in the dark.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside, City Hall was a blur of excited staff, baffled taxpayers, and a deeply unprepared intern trying to manage the front desk while taking selfies with Cassie and Maya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane led the group down the hall with his usual air of \u201cI regret everything about this decision,\u201d followed closely by Mark, who carried a small black flight case that totally didn\u2019t contain a fog machine \u2014 definitely not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They arrived at Room 204 to find:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A tray of cupcakes with edible Feral Eclipse logos printed on the frosting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A paper banner that said \u201cThank You For Bringing Joy (and Chaos) To Our City!\u201d in Comic Sans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mayor, two city council members, and someone from Parks and Recreation who looked like they\u2019d just walked into the wrong universe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWelcome!\u201d the mayor said, shaking Thane\u2019s hand with both of his. \u201cIt\u2019s not every day we give a proclamation to werewolves!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRight,\u201d Thane said, nodding. \u201cNew for us, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel immediately bit into a cupcake like it had insulted his ancestors. \u201cHoly hell. These slap.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mayor beamed. \u201cThey\u2019re red velvet. From Crumbs &amp; Frosting on 2nd Street.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m gonna marry this bakery,\u201d Jonah muttered through a mouthful of frosting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the mayor read aloud the official proclamation \u2014 complete with <em>\u201cWhereas: The band Feral Eclipse has brought the community together in the spirit of music and mild anarchy\u2026\u201d<\/em> \u2014 the band posed for photos, signed a few commemorative posters, and yes, took home a box of cupcakes <em>signed by the mayor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside, the fan crowd had only <em>grown.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Someone was selling knockoff band buttons on the lawn. Two girls in homemade werewolf ears were doing TikTok dances. A guy with a Bluetooth speaker was blasting <em>Run Wild<\/em> from his backpack. The police tried to form a line, but then one officer got distracted getting a selfie with Rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane stood on the bus steps, surveying the madness with the weariness of a sound engineer who knew he was about to be the one cleaning up everyone\u2019s frosting wrappers later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel nudged him, cupcake in hand. \u201cWorth it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane took a bite. Frosting. Red velvet. Civic glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He nodded. \u201cYeah. It was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind them, Mark emerged with the proclamation scroll\u2026 and a folded paper from the Parks &amp; Rec guy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel squinted. \u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark smirked. \u201cPermit for a \u2018low-impact public performance\u2019 at the city amphitheater.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane groaned. \u201cOh no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cassie clapped. \u201cOh <em>yes.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The bus was entirely too large for downtown Edmond.
